tl JIM lotas couri shingion State Historical Society Yesterday. . . a time of formality and elegance. The moods and feelings of the people were mirrored in the architecture. The Davenport, still one of the most beauti- ful buildings in Spokane, is a superb example of the un- hurried attitudes of the early 1900s. Ornate stone sculp- ture, arched patterns of brick work, gleaming marble floors, and richly carved wood blended to create an air of refinement. Today. . . a time of informality and simplicity. Soaring glass and steel skyscrapers capture the pulse of the time. Sprawling shopping centers, plastic hamburger palaces, and acres of concrete parking lots accommodate our de- pendence upon the automobile. Patterns of life may change, but the basic threads of so- ciety never do. We are always progressing yet we revolve around the same universal ideas. Before the football games in the early 1900s, kids used to serpentine dance through the downtown streets, blocking traffic and annoy- ing local businessmen. Today, the serpentine is still a part of the downtown scene. Souped-up machines, wildly- painted vans, and chrome-covered choppers cruise the streets, blocking traffic and annoying local businessmen. 14
