Text from Pages 1 - 216 of the 1976 volume:

It seems like only yesterday when Gladys Garland and many others like her walked the halls, cheered on Big Red, and sang the class song of June ' 13. . . The class is all here with its colors and yells . Maroon and Gold! Ra! Ra! It ' s the Senior A Class of the North Central High . It ' s June ' 13! Ra! Ra! You ' ve heard us — know us. You take off your hats when you see us pass by . For we ' ve the name that ' s won the fame For dear North Central High. . . A Tasty Cafeteria Lunch ... 10 c Four years have we spent ' neath the Red and the Black; Let ' s give ' em a Cheer! Ra! Ra! They entered North Central as freshmen. The student body consisted of 197 boys and 291 girls; 500 students were expected by the se- mester. Although the student body was small, Mr. Hargraves, the principal, noted that a definite spirit of loyalty to the school had been shown by students and faculty since the build- ing ' s opening in the Fall of 1908. When school opened, there were 28 rooms finished with 52 yet to be completed. Mr. Held, the architect, admitted with pride that Spokane would have the finest high school in the West. And oh, what a school it was! We have a fine standing, We ' ve made a big hit With our teachers dear! Ha! Ha! The classes offered varied little with those of to- day. There were scientific, classical, manual arts, commercial, and literary courses of study. In February 1909 the cafeteria opened. Clam chowder, ham or peanut butter sandwiches, pies, fruits, milk, coffee, and hot chocolate were of- fered. A good menu was promised; any three articles of one ' s choice sold for 10 cents . At a 1909 convocation, a speaker proclaimed that the first thing to make a person go down and out was smoking cigarettes and working slot machines . In the athletics ' department, baseball, basket- ball for both boys and girls, football and track were offered. As NC was made up of freshmen only, the teams were rather inexperienced but en- thused . South Central, Lewis and Clark as we know it today, burned down in 1910 . As a result, South Central students were transferred to NC. During that period, the two schools joined forces as The Spokane High School. Both NC and SC temporarily abandoned their own school colors and took on the Blue and White . In the Spring of 1912, South Central students returned to their home across the river, the new Lewis and Clark High School. Thus, the first graduating class of North Central proudly spent its senior year, 1913, under dear old Red and Black! Just watch us--ask us— We ' ll show you all how You can make yourselves seen. Just follow the rule That ' s set for the school By the Class of June ' 13. . . Photo courtesy of Eastern Washington Historical Society. Since 1908 the Voices of Students Have Echoed Through the NC Halls At last we must leave, Ne ' er again to return . Farewell, North Central High! Forever your walls will re-echo the sound Of that grand immortal cry Of ' 13 — Ra! Ra! And so it was. During the course of its 68 years, thous- ands of students have walked through the hallways of NC . Though the majority lose touch with their alma mater, the spirit and pride that are our school have lived on. Dress of Yesterday Reflects Formal Style In our earlier days, student life was governed by a more rigid set of rules. For example, dress codes were strictly observed. Young ladies of high standing would never be found wearing anything less than a dress of ankle length; slacks were exclusively for the young men . For a mere $1 .75 a young lady could purchase a heavy Galatia middy blouse . . . with silk lacings in front, high lacings at sides, French cuffs, long sleeves and pocket. A discerning young man could buy a dashing new two and three button roll lapel jacket, goodfitting trousers, and an athletic vest in gray, blue, tan and brown tones and in plaids, stripes or broken checks — an amazing buy at just $12.50. Styles of the times in a variety of shapes and leather choices were featured in the men ' s Florsheim shoes, prices ranging from five to seven dollars . The look of today is one of variety, almost anything goes . Denim is IN for casual wear or dress . Guys and gals top their jeans with an assortment of T shirts, fitted sweaters, and Indian gauze. When the girls shed their jeans for a more dressy look, knee to midi length A-line skirts or dresses are fashion- able . However, any length may be seen. Gone are the muted pastels for the guys; mod citrus and jewel-toned leisure suits replaced the dulled browns, blues, and grays. Open-neck floral print shirts complete the leisure look. Today ' s Look Is 8 Platforms , even in tennis shoes, wedgies and negative heels rate high in foot fashions. Shoe prices range from 15 to 35 dollars. To go along with the variety of shoes, one finds an assortment of wild socks: argyles, toe socks, stripes and racing checks . Must accessories for the today look include puka shell necklaces and a ring for every finger. Hot combs and curling irons give to- day ' s teen that natural look. Casual and Comfortable 9 Takin ' It Easy in the Good Old Days it -w Photos courtesy of Eastern Washington State Historical Societ ■ In the good old days, leisure ac- tivities included picnics and ice skating at Liberty Lake, movies, vaudeville, and road shows. Sleigh rides, hanging out at the fire station, parades for every holiday, fairs and circus shows were also popular. 10 A fun-filled day at Natatorium Park was a big event. The jack rabbit, the tunnel of love, and the carousel, which arrived in 1909, were popular rides. In the re- freshment line, a nickel would buy orangeade or soda pop while a dime would get you an ice cream cone. Street cars would get you where you wanted to go for a nickel . Night life ended at midnight when the owl trolley made the last round of the evening . If you missed the owl, it was a long walk home. No matter what the time of day, harassing trolley conductors seemed to be a favorite pastime of the teen group. In the Whirl of the 70 ' s Gone is Nat Park, but the memory lingers on with the newly-restored carousel . Al- though there seems to be no central gathering spot today, the completion of the Riverfront Park is expected to provide fun and entertainment for all . Foosball, pins, and frisbees offer relief from the hassles encountered at school . Disaster movies like Earthquake and The Towering Inferno headline theater marquees . Mixers, Time Square, and enjoying the view from Cliff Park are also part of the ' 70s. tl JIM lotas couri shingion State Historical Society Yesterday. . . a time of formality and elegance. The moods and feelings of the people were mirrored in the architecture. The Davenport, still one of the most beauti- ful buildings in Spokane, is a superb example of the un- hurried attitudes of the early 1900s. Ornate stone sculp- ture, arched patterns of brick work, gleaming marble floors, and richly carved wood blended to create an air of refinement. Today. . . a time of informality and simplicity. Soaring glass and steel skyscrapers capture the pulse of the time. Sprawling shopping centers, plastic hamburger palaces, and acres of concrete parking lots accommodate our de- pendence upon the automobile. Patterns of life may change, but the basic threads of so- ciety never do. We are always progressing yet we revolve around the same universal ideas. Before the football games in the early 1900s, kids used to serpentine dance through the downtown streets, blocking traffic and annoy- ing local businessmen. Today, the serpentine is still a part of the downtown scene. Souped-up machines, wildly- painted vans, and chrome-covered choppers cruise the streets, blocking traffic and annoying local businessmen. 14 Patterns of Life Swirl Ever Onward This theme section would not have been possible without the willing help of a lot of people . Thanks go to Mr. Joe Jonas for his superb pic- ture of Gladys Garland who graduated from here in June of 1 913 . Many thanks go to Don Anderson and Chuck Caraway, Tamarack photographers, for all the extra time and effort they put into making this section a success . Eastern Washington State Historical Society and Wirsche Photo Lab also deserve credit. Much of the written work in this section was taken from old Tamaracks A great many thanks also go to the following volunteers who gave of their free time to pose these pictures . Rodkey, Principal Who has seen the wind ? Neither I nor you, But when the leaves hang trembling The wind is passing through. Who has seen the wind? Neither you nor I , But when the trees bow down their heads The wind is passing by . -Christina Rossetti That poem has always held an awesome, mysterious, beauty to me, because it deals with something that is most intangible, yet very, very real . In many ways that is what North Central means to me. Who can precise- ly state what North Central really signifies? It is so real and so true to say that it was, and it is opportunity, joy, work, play, suc- cess, failure, sorrow, friendships. It is history and tradition; it is the cutting edge of tomorrow . But whatever else North Central is, it is peo- ple caring, sharing, hoping, dreaming, re- membering, helping, without reference to age, status, or gender. Yes, North Central was, and North Central is. We are all ex- periencing it. . ' o Vice Principals Assist With Curriculum, Students North Central to me is one hundred years of fond memories carefully compressed into a twenty-eight year career. They are memories of little people and big people cast in a unique spirit — timeless and forever. North Central has a tremendous follow- ing in the city of Spokane. It has pride in each of the old bricks which mortar has held tight all these years. When you think over the many experi- ences in life, the high school years spent at North Central had a tremendous impact. NC may be torn down some day, but it will be remembered by each and every student . The spirit of NC is its students, teachers, halls, gyms, pep cons, teams, and in a few short years, graduation . This is still Indian Country. 21 Though Difficult the Trials, The Office Staff Still Smiles 22 In Wisdom Profound, The Counselors Abound 1. June Nilson - Dean of Students 2. Billie Mountain 3. A team in the sports spotlight is the girls ' track team, not because they have done anything special because they haven ' t YET. They are in the spotlight because they are a new team and are expected to do fairly well as can be seen by the large turn out for its first season. Coach Joe Schauble expects an eventful season for the varsity track team. Although the sprints may become a weak link the long distance runners will at least hold their own or better. The field events should be led into high standings by Doug Gisselberg in the shot put and the discus and Steve Lawson in the javelin. The team will have a few great individual efforts but as Coach Schauble said, we don ' t have much depth as a whole . In the course of its 68 years, NC has seen both hardships and prosperous times. Big Red sent many brave men to fight for the American cause in the numerous wars our country has endured. Some of these men were to return, to live on; others laid down their lives so that we might have freedom. NC saw the onset of prohibition with its speak- easies and boot-legging. It saw the Roaring 20 ' s, an era of wonderful nonsense, when radio, the Model T and a solo flight across the Atlantic hit the nation with a tremendous impact. The Indians felt the pressures when the stockmarket crashed; their parents lost jobs and the banks failed. Many students quit school to look for jobs . With the ending or the war, television burst upon the American scene. NC watched the space age expand, from orbiting the earth to Neil Armstrong ' s first step on the moon. It has seen four states join the Union. Medical and scientific research, as well as the jet age, pollu- tion, extinction of animals, Watergate, the resigna- tion of President Nixon, the end of the draft and many other important things have worked together to make our lives what they are today . 206 Trying to Understand Today . . . This is a time of free love, illegal drugs and an ever-increasing crime rate. The unemployment rate is high, prices are out of sight and the government is too busy with foreign affairs to concern itself with the people here at home. Bombings, kidnappings and murders have become everyday occurrences. Big Red has seen the people of the state legalize abortion and hitch-hiking and reinstate the death penalty. Good things have happened, too. Computers that ' can do just about everything are replacing manual labor. The Concord, a supersonic jet, can cross the Atlantic Ocean in 2 hours, and the microwave oven cuts cooking time to only minutes. People are getting back to nature; some are growing organic gardens and others are going all out for back-packing, camping and wilderness survival. Snow skiing and snowmobiling have become popular winter sports in the Northwest. 1976 is a time for reflection. During the Bicenten- nial we are looking back at our country ' s roots while wondering what the future holds. We want to thank these people for their efforts in helping to make the ' 76 Tamarack a success: Staff Advisor-Judy Feryn; Photography Advisor-Joe Jonas; Art Advisor-Barbara Eddy; Artists-Bob Lenius, Doug Buckley; Photographers- Don Anderson, Chuck Caraway, Dennis Wolbert, John Robertson; American Yearbook Rep-Doug Carpenter; Band Photos-John Luppert; Burchetts; Rueco; Eastern Washington State Historical Society. The future of the world, according to predictions, includes World War III , California falling into the ocean, the dropping of nuclear bombs, and the second coming of Christ. Living on the moon, driving around in space cars and having outerspacemen visit Earth are also possi- bilities . Our own more immediate future might in- clude getting a college education, find- ing a job, getting married, having kids, getting rich or maybe becoming famous. The future of North Central is even more uncertain. How many more years will stu- dents be able to walk down these proud halls, humming Red and Black ? NC has survived several proposed attempts to close its doors. Though the physical plant will close someday, the spirit and traditions of Big Red will live on in our hearts forever!
