Such are the views of Helen Hazen Rymond, the only woman on School District Eighty-One s school board at this writer ' s interview. Mrs. Rymond recalls how this rewarding experience came about. A native Spokanite, Mrs. Rymond is a North Central graduate. Her father, the late Mr. John Hazen, was a founding partner of the Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Having two daughters which are also North Central alumni, Mrs. Rymond has always been actively interested in education. One of the most important and meaningful awards that I have had in my life is the Golden Acorn, which I received two years ago. This award Is given by the P a r e n t- Te a c h e r s Association to the individual who has devoted the most to the service of education. After the death of her husband, Harry Rymond, in 1950, Mrs. Rymond became Assistant Manager of Hazen and Jaeger. She is now President and General Manager. I had been asked several times by various groups to serve on the board. After much consideration, Mrs. Rymond accepted the position, with the chief concern to provide the finest education for the most people. Mrs. Rymond completed her six-year term in November, 1971. Around North Central, the Rymond name is associated with the Harry W. Rymond award, presented to the senior boy who has achieved the most in the face of the greatest difficulty. The recipient is honored by having his name engraved on a bronze plaque, and is given the gift of the gold watch by the Rymond family. Mrs. Rymond will long be remembered as a devoted community citizen, a devoutly religious person, a most gracious lady, and a compassionate director of her business.
