There are all sorts of philosophies afloat today in American society. some valid and others as phony as three dollar bills! Some raise human dignity to new heights. others lower human life to less than animal level. Eat, drink, and be merry, some say. And many have tried that route and experienced sad disappointment and tragedy, coming to the realization of the futility of that one! And now abides faith, hope, love, but the greatest of these is love, is another prevalent one, Yet the interpretation of the meaning of 'love' is as confusing as anything in our society. To some it means merely lust. To others it means compassion. And there are all shades of understanding between these two extremes. The young of our land cry out against the desecration of our country by pollution. Ecological and environmental studies captivate our attention. And yet, many of us do not recognize, nor care. that we contribute to the problem by our own carelessness and indifference. How many of us walked to school this year rather than drive for this very reason? Many of you at school this year have been dedicated to another philosophy. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free, these words came from the Christian era but have been used frequently since that time. Would anyone like to define 'truth'? There comes a time in the life of every person when he must set priorities. Love, understanding, judgment, responsibility, loyalty, character, trust, courtesy. hate, prejudice, unfaithfulness, selfishness, lust, war. deceit-yes. all of these words may be found in a dictionary, and all of them may be found in the lives of persons. Just where are you placing your priorities? Just what philosophy of life are you adopting? Oh, that as humans we might gain greater insight into interpersonal. interracial, and intersocial relationships! But first of all, we must begin to understand ourselves. developing our own attitudes toward the WHO, WHY, and WHAT of Iifel ' il g John P. Rodkey l Principal
