Efficient operation of Spokane ' s educational system was the result of frequent meetings of the principals and administrators of the city ' s schools. Decisions on widely ranging school problems concerning policy, rules and enforcement is up to the School Board. Approval of staff and improvements in relation to particular schools are also the duty of our directors. Appointment of a city superintendent is made by the School Board. Dr. Albert Avars has served three vears. It is also the duty of the School Board to employ assistants, supervisors, teachers, janitorial help, cooks and other personnel for the functioning of schools. Details such as provisions for textbooks, audio-visual aids and essential supplies to aid teachers are directed by the Board. In the recent fall election, Orville L. Barnes and John R. Warn were elected to the School Board of District No. 81. They have contributed to the decisions and policy-making of the Board since assuming the position. John P Rodkev. Principal George A. Smith, Vice-Principal NC Administration The administration at North Central is directly responsible for the efficient management of all school affairs. Most policy interpretation is handled by t he principal, John P. Rodkey. Having served his second year as vice-principal at North Central, George A. Smith has now become a familiar figure about the school as he handles the problems of student management and control. North Central has a dedicated administrative staff, which has devoted many hours to the betterment and understanding of its students. Their aim is to be of service to both students and parents in solving scholastic and social problems. 23 Faculty Helps Students Maintain Responsibilities Wondering if he should risk letting his third period phvs- ics class do another experiment, is Mr. Orval Theisen. Happiness Is Being a Senior Lilac ueen Sandi March 25 was the date North Central crowned its 1 968 Lilac Princess. The program, sponsored by the PTA, was held at night. Students and members of the PTA furnished entertainment between the candidates presentations. The ten finalists gave three minute speeches and impromtus. Then the announcement was given to Kathy Thompson, last year ' s Lilac Princess. As she opened the envelope a hush fell over the audience. The words emerged — Sandi Pederson. 73 Graduates Bid Farewell 74 In Memory of Michael W. Brophy, Our Fellow Classmate How do we comprehend the mystery of God ' s plan? A God who could grasp the life strings of a fellow student. And, pulling sharply, draw him unto Himself? So was the story of Michael W. Brophy, killed in an auto accident this past school year. Tragedy causes a duel in which grief and self-evaluation are a part. Those who knew Mike were acutely aware of his absence. Others remember with shock the cause of his death. And wonder what might have happened to his life had he lived. Understanding escapes us. We can only hope he rests in the hands of God. 75 Mr. Simonson, adviser, looks to the May 3rd Junior Prom as the conclusion of this year ' s class affairs. Connie Hirst is signing up for committees for the junior Prom. Junior Class Officers Help Create Interest in Class Activities Exhibiting spirit and determination, the class of ' 68 raced through an active and successful year. The officers directed their class activities toward the presentation of the annual Junior Prom. Each homeroom elected a representative who met in Junior Council with Mr. Simonson, adviser. Bees, Frosh Strive for Varsity The B-Squad is the last stepping stone to Varsity for foot- baller ' s at North Central. During this stage, the players are taught more discipline and fundamentals which will make them not only better football players, but better individuals as well. The Varsity coaches keep their eyes on the players who are hard-hitting and have the true desire to win. Reflecting on the season passed, Coach Mike Bundy stated, We started the season slowly, but at season ' s end we felt we were the best B team in the city and intend to prove it in the next two years with city championships. The Braves showed great promise, finishing the season with three consecutive wins. Football is no longer a game of brawny strength, but one of tactics which tax each player ' s brain to its fullest capacity. It was this principle that Frosh Coach Joe Schauble instilled into the Papooses. I was very pleased with the progress of the team because the demonstrated sincere desire to win, commented Coach Schauble about his ' 67 Freshmen. Two of the most outstanding players for the Frosh were Steve DeLong, who won the Inspirational award, and Dan DiCicco, who won the Captain ' s trophy. It was here that Coach Les Hogan taught them to be the warriors thev are. Kevin Graham, who wrestled 143, 154, and 1 65, felt that as a whole, the wrestlers had a very successful season. Two outstanding freshmen who frequently saw action on the Junior Varsity were Jim Carter and Steve DeLong. DeLong felt that the frosh learned much this year, and gained experience working with the varsitv. He went on to say, We were strong in the light and heavy weights, but like the varsity, lacked depth in the middle weights. The freshman schedule was very limited. Jim Carter expressed hope that the number of matches should be increased to give more kids a chance to wrestle. From there the Indians looked forward to a winning season with hopes of capturing the city crown. With only four seniors on the roster, the tribe relied on some outstanding juniors for added power at the plate. For this year ' s team, the key word was defense. Coach Manfred stated, To have a winning season, we must play tough defense. I ' m sure with hard hitting, a lot of hustle and a little luck, the 1968 varsity Indians will end the baseball season in style.
