History Teaches To Learn From Experience Can you think of a better place for Egypt? queries Richard Pelkie. Developing maturity of action in students by the study of factual knowledge of the past and present, is the major objec- tive of the social studies department. It is hoped that students will learn the skills, attitudes and information that is necessary for an understanding of our own and other activities of this world. It is felt that this will lead them to a more success- ful and enlightened citizenship in our government by the people, directly or through representatives. Four years of history are now required for all students. Freshmen are required to take Washington History; sopho- mores take World History; juniors, United States History; seniors, Contemporary World Problems which consists of economics, government, Russia and the Near East, eastern Europe, western Europe, and Latin America. New this year are more intensive courses on Africa and the Middle East, Latin America and Canada. So North Central requires six semesters of English. In these courses language, composition and literature are studied. Eight semesters are a must for those who wish to go on to college, with special emphasis on vocabulary, themes, and more advanced literary study. For the non-college bound senior there are courses which emphasize practical English skills and reading for enjoyment. Speech and drama offer both pleasure and practical training while journalism, a one-semester subject, provides the background for practical application of English skills on the school newspaper or yearbook. Presenting Mr. Rodkey (center) with a gift from our Japanese sister city, Nishinomiya, are Mr. Kobayashi, vice chief supervisor of the Nishinomiya Educational Board, and Mr. Inuki, principal of our sister high school, who spent some time during October visiting Spokane schools.

Since one year of a laboratory science is required, a large majority of sopho- mores are completing the biology course. Juniors and seniors may broaden their science background by taking chemistry or physics. Integrated physical science is another optional course offered to North Central students. Mathematical courses are aimed to stimulate logical thinking by the students. Although students are not required to take math above their freshman year, many continue after completing freshman algebra. Geometry, intermediate math- ematics and advanced mathematics provide students with an opportunity to further their mathematical ability. In senior math students review all of the basic fundamentals of math. This is a circle! emphasizes Bumll Exley as eager algebra students watch. 30
