So North Central requires six semesters of English. In these courses language, composition and literature are studied. Eight semesters are a must for those who wish to go on to college, with special emphasis on vocabulary, themes, and more advanced literary study. For the non-college bound senior there are courses which emphasize practical English skills and reading for enjoyment. Speech and drama offer both pleasure and practical training while journalism, a one-semester subject, provides the background for practical application of English skills on the school newspaper or yearbook. Presenting Mr. Rodkey (center) with a gift from our Japanese sister city, Nishinomiya, are Mr. Kobayashi, vice chief supervisor of the Nishinomiya Educational Board, and Mr. Inuki, principal of our sister high school, who spent some time during October visiting Spokane schools.

Students Throughout Year After many years of preparation for college, students have to complete various types of tests which Lorraine McNew, col- lege counselor, organizes. She had the task of gathering information from many col- leges and universities and counseling seniors who are planning for further education. Kenneth Hagen, registrar, handles all of the IBM schedule cards for the 1,885 students at North Central. He also coun- sels students about their classes and makes all necessary changes. Lillian Barnes and Stella Mills keep the library up-to-date with a large variety of magazines, books and reference materials. There is also a wide variety of vocational material available. With a complete library, correct sched- uling and counseling aid for the students ' use, it is possible to get full value from the education offered. These behind the scenes jobs help the school run more smoothly and are a great help to the stu- dents who need aid in their preparing for adulthood. Cataloguing new books for student use are librarians, Lillian Barnes Lorraine McNew, college advisor, and Kenneth Hagen, registrar, discuss the ever-changing re- quirements for college entrance.

History Teaches To Learn From Experience Can you think of a better place for Egypt? queries Richard Pelkie. Developing maturity of action in students by the study of factual knowledge of the past and present, is the major objec- tive of the social studies department. It is hoped that students will learn the skills, attitudes and information that is necessary for an understanding of our own and other activities of this world. It is felt that this will lead them to a more success- ful and enlightened citizenship in our government by the people, directly or through representatives. Four years of history are now required for all students. Freshmen are required to take Washington History; sopho- mores take World History; juniors, United States History; seniors, Contemporary World Problems which consists of economics, government, Russia and the Near East, eastern Europe, western Europe, and Latin America. New this year are more intensive courses on Africa and the Middle East, Latin America and Canada.
