Administration Implements Policy Is happiness a dog? Why of course not! Happiness is North Central! chuckles Principal John Rodkey (right). Vice principal George Smith smiles in agreement. Success comes to people who are not considering the narrow question of what they are paid for, but the broad question of what they can do to be helpful. It is the attitude which leads to the promotion of the individual, the profit of the business, and the pros- perity of that nation. So wrote Calvin Coolidge. It would be a great thing indeed, if all of us gave closer attention to our abilities and interests and channeled our efforts in the great cause of mankind. No greater reward can be reached than a selfless de- votion to such great causes. As the seniors graduate, we will be watching the future achievements of each one. 25

Meeting in a regular session are District 81 Board of Directors: H. Avery Peyton, George R. Nethercutt, William Gordon Luscher, Byron L. Swanson, Helen Hazen Rymond, and Dr. Albert Ayars, superintendent. School Board Decides Policy Superintendent Albert Lee Ayars, Ed. D. Who gives our principal permission to leave town on school business? Why, the School Board of School District 81. That ' s who! Decisions on widely ranged school problems con- cerning policy, rules, enforcement, and matters of varying magnitudes is their job. Approval of staff, improvements in relations of particular schools are also the duty of our directors. Appointment of a city superintendent is made by the School Board. Dr. Albert Ayars has served two years. It is the School Board ' s job to employ assistants, supervisors, teachers, janitors, cooks and other personnel for the functioning of schools. De- tails such as provisions for textbooks, audio-visual aids, and essential supplies to aid teachers are directed by the Board. Though their main concern is for the public schools, they also serve in the control and operation of the Spokane Community College at Fort George Wright. Passage in the election of November, 1966, of Referendum 14 and 15, the Senate Joint Resolu- tion, Part I and III, dealing with increases in funds for school improvement and expansion will affect the School Board ' s plans for the new fiscal year, providing local citizens approve special school financing. 24

Mrs. Margaret Gillingham assists as Denise Garrity reads and Jean- nine Fischer uses the braille typewriter. Student counseling is among the most difficult duties undertaken at North Central. Mrs. Patricia Butterfield and Mr. Kenneth Mhyre, with the aid of Miss Patricia Mc- Kiernan and Mr. Vem Tucker, help our students with academic and emotional problems which may arise. New to the school this year is Mrs. Margaret Gilling- ham, who assists the blind students attending North Cen- tral. It is her duty to transcribe all texts and any other necessary materials into braille. She also goes into the class- room to help her students in any classes requiring labora- tory work. She spent much time acquainting the students with the halls before the actual opening of the school term. Looking over the busy schedule of events for the school year are Mr. Kenneth Mhyre and Mrs. Patricia Butterfield, student counselors.
