Designs on the cover and throughout the book represent these gold- en years. The division pages are symbolic of everyday activities which in future years will bring back Wonderful memories. A doorway to the future . . . to new as- pirations, to dreams come true-to further education, business opportunities, marriage. fame and fortune? VVho could know what lay beyond the doors of this, their beloved school . . . North Central! Could those 287 freshmen and sopho- mores who first enrolled at North Central in September, 1908, possibly have known what the name North Central would mean to future generations? it it 727 Lt it ' -I. Herman Beare was principal of North Central in 1908. The incomplete, U-shaped structure had 12 rooms and 12 teachers that fall. Students were enrolled in one of five courses-classical, scientific, literary. commercial or manual arts. Lunches were packed at home, and cocoa, coffee or milk purchased at school for 3 cents a cup. A second wing, including a lunchroom in the basement where lunches were sold for 10 cents, was completed in February, 1909. Invasion by the Lewis and Clark Tigers occurred in 1910 after a fire destroyed much of their school-the South Central. For three semesters the two schools existed in the same building and claimed the same colors-blue and white. rltikiffitift Thanksgiving day, 1912, marked the be- ginning of a lasting rivalry clash, the tra- ditional North Central-Lewis and Clark football game, played annually at the fair- grounds. Everyone in town would turn out, and North Central won two out of every three games. In 1912 Vox Puellarum QVoice of the Girlsj was organized as the first club at I I I North Central: and North Central gradu- ated its first class of 87. L. C. liradford lllradj. debate coach. and Miss .lessie Gibson, girls' adviser who arrived at North Central in 1913, were the founders of the Boys' Federation and the Girls' League, respectively. 7-'lx' it 72' it if? The Federation was started with the pur- pose of permitting boys in school to meet obligations of the nation in time of war. The boys participated in Red Cross, YMCA. relief and thrift drives. After the war, the Federation was reorganized to meet peace- time requirements. Girls' League originally had four depart- ments-social service, patriotic, personal efficiency and entertainment. Each girl was a member of one department. Federation'and League executive coun- cils joined in March of 1922 to form the Associated Student Council. A new consti- tution in 1951 brought about the present Associated Student Body. iksifsifiifilr Under the direction of Ernest E. fDadj Green, the presses rolled out the first copy of The North Central News on September 25, 1917. Until that time, the Tamarack was an all-school magazine, published every six weeks. 1t had many names from 1916 to 1924 when it became the traditional Tama- rack upon a suggestion of Richard Har- greaves, principal from 1909 to 1918 when A. H. ,Benefiel took his place. Although now the library and the cafe- teria are taken for granted, in 1918, the year they were completed, they were a special treat. With seating space for 185
