persons, the library included a consultation room and librarian's workroom. In 1920, the Federation originated the Red and Black Carnival to stir up enthusi- asm for the Thankgiving game. The Asso- ciated Student Council, the League, the Federation and each club conducted a con- -cession at the carnival. Ruled by a queen and her court, the carnival was an event not only for the students and their families, hut for their neighbors and everyone. Projects were undertaken by the student hody during the years 1924-26 to raise funds for a much-needed playfield. Level- ing the field and getting it in shape was -done by the students. Bleachers were built in the manual training shop, and it was a big day when the first event was played on the new field in April, 1927. 12' it iff Sir 'mfr I C. Olin Rice, the conductor of the first operetta in 1924, staged the show annually until Mr. Taft took his place in 1947. Each year, work was started on Gctober 1 for this December production. The music festi- vals today replace the operettas of yesterday. Last year, the gala talent show, the Doll Shop, was presented for the fourteenth and final time. Each girl or boy who ever danced as a clown, a penguin, a Raggedy Ann or Andy, has wonderful memories of his part in the biennial show of which Miss Pinkham has always said, There are no small parts, just small people. Graduates of 1925 no doubt recall that they were the first to wear caps and gowns. Standard navy blue, wool dress for each girl was adopted in 1925 and worn from November to April. Semester tests were dis- carded in 1927 and replaced by topic tests every six weeks. 72' 'ik if it it First invited to Weiiatchee in 1926, the hand once again attended the celebration this spring. The Red Feathers made their first Apple Blossom trip in 1951 on the band's twenty-fifth anniversary. The first girls' marching unit in Spo- kane, the Red Feathers, organized by Miss Pinkham to encourage mass participation and give every girl a chance, appeared at school in 1938. The name was chosen through a school contest, the uniform was designed by the art department and the pattern was cut by the home economics department. it 12' if if it Swimming was again a part of the phys- ical education program when, after being floored over for 11 years, the pool was re- dedicated in 1943. A new filtration and chlorination system were added. Joseph M. Tewinkel, a 1919 graduate of North Central, became its principal in 1946, replacing Frederic G. Kennedy, principal since 1922. Formerly the Baxter Hospital gymna- sium, the new combination gym and music department was dedicated February 26, 1948, after having been remodeled by the school district. New auto mechanics and electronics shops were installed in 1951 and 1953 respectively. it it il' it 71? Now it is 1959 and North Central is 50 years old. Thousands are proud that they have walked in her halls, studied in her classrooms, learned from her teachers and made friends among her students. This spring over 600 young men and women, who have completed their high school studies, will walk through the doors of North Central into the future. Leaving us also are five beloved faculty members who have given unselfishly of their time and talent to North Central students through the years.
