The .story was as follows: Pair day in Bagdad is marked by the arrival of various visitors, among them Mrs. Horace J. Mc- Cann. the new American Counsul, with her daughter. Klsa. and her daughter ' s friend. Anne. On being presented to the Caliph and his daughter. Jewel with some other friends, they learn that an assassin is abroad who carries a bomb concealed in a camera, and for this reason all persons with cameras are to be shot immedately. Dick Taylor arrives by plane from Holly- wood, accompanied by his two mechanics, Bob and Bill. They are looking for a girl known only as the Belle of Bagdad in order to engage her as a moving picture star. They hope to identify her by some small photographs which they carry, and also by the sacred amulet which she wears, but in order to make sure they bring a large cam- era with them to take pictures of all pros- pects. Dick meets Jewel, who welcomes him cordially, but the two mechanics meet Ali Ben Mustapa. the chief of police, who sees their camera and orders them to be executed forthwith. In order to escape Bill and Bob resort to disguise, first as der- vishes, and afterwards as members of the Caliph ' s body guards. While in this latter disguise they capture the real assassin, and in return the Caliph orders Jewel to pre- sent Dick with the sacred amulet. This serves to identify her as the Belle. Bill and Bob are freed in time to couple with Elsa and Anne, while Henrietta Whipstitch finds solace in the companionship of Ali Ben Mustapha. The sets were designed and painted by Betty Marks. North Carolina. Mr. Buckley was based there for indoctrin- ation school before going into physical fit- ness or general duty. Coach Buckley came to North Central in 1981. He has coached not only football A friendly smile and greeting for all. and baseball, but also basketball during his first years bere. When asked what football season lie re- membered most. Coach buckley remarked, The season of 1933 is especially outstand- ing. Wc lost the first two games but won ii:t [nond. the last four to tie for the championship. During this season the real North Central spirit was at its best. But this has been true during the whole time I have been here. I really believe it would not be possible to find a better type of youth to work with than I have had at North Cen- tral. Mr. Buckley also acted as social studies teacher and will be remembered by the Stu- dents of his classes as well as by the boys he coached. He was always an understanding teacher and a real friend. So until you come back again — Good luck, Buck. Page eighty-seven Page eighty-eight FOOTBALL ■ft -tt a a ■ Although the football sea- son was anything but successful from the Indian standpoint, the North Central team gave a good account of itself in every game, never giving up the battle until the final gun. BASEBALL it ir -ft ■ ft THE INDIANS took fourth place in the city league basketball season this year; but Ray Bloom, crack North Cen- tral guard, piled up 123 points for a new record during this season. Not only did he make the new record, but during a game with Central Valley, Ray racked up a total of 81 points for a new individual scoring record in one game. In other words Ray might be called a one-man team. All but one of the games that North Cen- tral lost were decided by only two or three points, indicating that if the breaks had been with them they may have finished much higher than fourth place. BASEBALL it ir r -b ix I BASEBALL at North Central at the beginning of the season looked very promising with four lettermen back. These boys being Ralph Anderson, Jerry Miller. Dick Nygaard and Bob Weeks. This year Archie Buckley, the usual coach of the base- ball squad, enlisted in the navy, and Bob Barnard took over as the new mentor. With some tough breaks the team had bad luck w ith the pre se ason games but as the season approached the squad was rapidly improv- ing. The pitching stall ' this year usually Con- sisted of Miller, Taylor, and Weeks during the practice games with other schools. One advantage for North Central was the fact that a majority of their games were played on their own field. Payc ninety-two First Row: Ray Bloom. Bob Tarker. Cy Bare. Jack Stafford. Don Ha- worth. TRACK ■ir r tr ir ft ■ ThK track situation of North Central also had a promising outlook even though the squad was left with hut one re- turning lrttirnian. Cy Hare. During pre- season practice sessions many fast times were recorded. One asset to North Central this year was I he arrival of Floyd Hansen, a distance runner from Pullman. This hoy anil another newcomer. Dick Kby. figured to be two of North Central ' s fastest runners and contenders for to)) points. Also out- standing was Harvey Williams, a junior, who vastly improved and helped many times in getting the Indians the points. During an interclass meet at the beginning of the season Harvey collected 1 (i points to be individual high scorer of the meet and help his team, the juniors, to win. With these outstanding advantages to figure on North Central was a sure con- tender for the city track crown. Page ninety-three TENNIS r it ij ir ir r ThK outlook for the tennis team this year looked as good as any for North Central which is up to old standards as the Indians have captured the tennis crown in about every year tiny have played. This vear with Jim Pitcher and Lewis Stephen- son back the chances look exceptionally well for these boys are probably two of the best tennis players this .school has turned out. Jim Pitcher last year captured the singles title for the city, so there was no reason why the city titles shouldn ' t fall toward N. C. again this year. Other members of Coach Ernest L. Hix ' s team were: Dick Soth, Larry Nobles. Ray Bloom and Cliff Mast. Tennis is now one of the best sports which can be taken up by the youth of to- day according to the army air corps. This sport gives the body varied forms of exer- cise and provides stamina. Page ninety-four GOLF GOLF at North Central has rapidly increasing in popularity during re- cent years. Several times some of the best golfers of the city have been organized at North Central. North Central started golf compel it ion in 1918 and has continued through the yens. This year Coach Walter C. Hawes had three returning men from last years ' squad. These boys were: Hoi) Lyons. Dick Olson and Hob Whorle. All of these boys showed ability last year and bolstered N. C. ' s chances for a golf crown very much. Last year four men were graduated from the squad. On the golf squad the boys received train- ing in coordination, as well as healthful recreation. GIRLS ' BADMINTON ft -tt r ft it UNDER the direction of Miss Elsa Pinkham, head of the physical educa- tion department, the girls ' badminton tour- nament proved to be one of the outstanding sports for girls this semester. Carol Carpenter Whipple was the winner of the singles tournament while Shirley Murbach and Lorna Milam took the champ- ion title in the doubles matches. Badminton, like other girls ' sports was open only to girls taking gym. The tourna- ment started in December and the final games were played in January. Badminton was an important part of the physical fitness program carried out in the uirls ' gym department as it provided an op- portunity for extensive training in coordin- ation and exercise. The birdie was kept skimming rapidly back and forth over the net in this game, which is considered by experts to be one of the fastest of all sports. Although badminton is similar to tennis and looks easy to play, it requires a great deal of intricate footwork. The ability to place shots so as to catch the opposing player off guard also adds to the intricacies of the game. The girls learned these tips and many more bv turning out for badminton and the singles tournament really provided some fast games. Page ninety-nine GIRLS ' GOLF ft ft ft ft ft ft J()Y Davis captained the North Central golfers during the fall semester while Beverly Tschirgi was captain for tin- spring semester.
