Appliance of skills shown in various science classes The science department aimed at a more comprehensive study of the sci- ences. Films and other visual aids, along with fine lab facilities offered classes a better understanding of the scientific world around us. Besides the usual dissection of cats, frogs, and sharks, students in zoology classes participated in field trips to state parks to observe animals and their be- havior. In an effort to further their knowledge of body systems, physiology students set up experiments on heart rate and blood pressure. The study of molecules, atoms, acids, and bases were some of the topics dis- cussed in chemistry classes. Advanced chemistry classes stressed more lab work and independent study. Studies of heat, electricity, and magnetism were included in the physics courses. Students studying botany used scien- tific methods to apply their knowledge of the plant kingdom to their own existence. Geology students examined rocks and minerals to determine their compositions. Students probe intricacies of Early American Litcniturc came alive this year with the reading of The Cru- cible, The Scarlet Letter, poems by Irving, and the gruesome stories of Poe. Sophomores took time out for the present by studying the traditional grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. Spending most of their time in the library, seniors searched for information needed to com- plete their term papers which proved to be beneficial for their futures. Chasing the little bright lights in Read- ing Lab gave students the opportunity to correct bad reading habits and increase speed. A select group of senior students were offered a humanities class in which they held informal type discussions using a seminar format. An increase of interest in dramatics and speech classes was noticed as these courses were offered to students wishing to improve their speaking ability and poise. Both courses included pantomim- ing and developing facial expressions as well as a good speaking voice. BOTTOM: KEVIN FORD demonstrates how dra- matics courses can create a more useful imagina- tion. RIGHT: FLIPPING THROUGH THE PAGES of a reference book looking up facts for her term paper, senior Patti Schaefer spends her spare time in the library. 30 I
