Panther spirit shown in spring activities i Hundreds of pairs of blue, white, and even striped tennis shoes roamed through the halls on March 25. These sneakers belonged to the students who felt the spirit of the first annual 1971 Tennis Shoe Day. Encouraged by the Student Council, students were asked to show support for the spring teams by wearing their tennis shoes on this day. Spring sports, including tennis, golf, baseball, and track, were honored on April 24, Spring Sports Day. Elected as queen, Christie Schlaegel reigned over the teams as they placed in their re- spective events. For the juniors, spring held extra meani ng. The Junior Prom at the In- diana Roof, was held on May 8 with a theme of 1910-Yesterday. The break- fast following the dance was held at the Dolphin Club and featured the Soul Messengers. Crowned as the king and queen were Jeff Robertson and Jamie Corey. The end of the school year for the seniors brought the excitement of graduating but also the sadness of leaving. On Slop Day seniors came dressed in anything from police outfits to baseball uniforms. 1,123 seniors gathered on June 8 at the coli- seum in caps and gowns to receive their long awaited diplomas. Their final get- together, the Graduation Dance, was held at the Indiana Roof on June 12. FAR UPPER LEFT: ANNUAL SPRING SPORTS DAY heralds the renewal of activity by Arthur Rod- dy and Tysaud Johnson, members of the 1971 track team. UPPER LEFT: TO THE STATELY MUSIC OF pomp and circumstance, 1971 graduates en- ter the gymnasium. When they leave, they will have received their diplomas along with silent hopes for their future. FAR LOWER LEFT: THE EN- THUSIASM for Annual Senior Slop Day appears to guarantee that this day will remain a firm school activity. Meaningful experiences fill summer For 1,153 summer school students, parallel parking, figure eights, and white lines were all very common. These stu- dents were part of the summer Driver ' s Education program, which consisted of 28 instructors and 22 automobiles. Mr. Norman Harner was the coordinator for the entire program. The students who were enrolled in one of the 5 sessions spent seven days in class learning the fundamentals and two and a quarter hours in actual driving practice per day. Each session lasted eleven days. Instead of taking advantage of the lazy days, some students found jobs both mentally and financially rewarding. Corn de-tassling, life-guarding, and clerking were the most popular means to earn money. Vacation was not all hard work and learning for everyone. Trips, swimming, and football practice kept the rest busy. 14
