Independent siudy, labs highlight science classes The science department of- fered many new techniques to N. C. students. The drug education classes, headed by Mr. Prettyman listened to tapes and viewed many movies. Following the movies, they had a chance to evaluate them into five categories. In addition, sev- eral guest speakers visited the classes. Physiology students participat- ed in laboratory work twice a week. Along with their study of the body systems, their dissec- tions included the brain of a sheep and fetal pigs. The chemistry classes all par- ticipated in a total independent study program. With this method, students could work at their own speed and also receive more in- dividual help. students listen intently while Mr. Staver lectures to his Chemistry class. 26 — Academics

Qocial Qtudies classes are involved The Social Studies Department kept up its excellent course work with many panel discussions, guest speakers and projects, all building greater understanding of one ' s past and future. Sophomores and Juniors re- lated past history to our present world situation and problems, while Seniors took an in depth look at our government at the local and national levels. Politically minded students had an excellent opportunity to re- search the candidates and their policies with many lectures and discussions by some local politicians. Panels and debates were com- mon in all the Social Studies classes as students attempted to compare and to contrast our so- ciety with those of the past and future.
