New activities spark enthusiasm in English Department classes Several new and exciting activities stimulated the English Department this year, providing more varied experiences to take care of the needs of a greatly in- creased school population. One new course, Structural Linguistics, was planned to complement the traditional aspect of teaching, while at the same time being used to motivate pupils ' interest in the English Language. The use of paperback classics continued to be a convenient means of enriching literary backgrounds. These inexpensive volumes also helped relieve the strain on pocketbooks. In the dramatics section of the English Department, pupils working with stage produc- tions gained valuable experience while having fun participating in them. Teahouse of the August Moon was presented on a stage transformed into an oriental village. A Greek tragedy and a Shakespearean drama, As You Like It, were other projects undertaken by drama students. Extra-curricular activities relating to English studies included weekend conventions and summer high school institutes at various universities. Electives, which included, speech, forensics, extem- peraneous speaking, and debate, rounded out the program. An expanded faculty of 32 members worked together to build a strong English Department this year.
