Hank Skoglund has always held the Greek philosophers in high es- teem, both intellectually and practical- ly, and he has exemplified the virtues of wisdom, courage, temperance, and jus- tice as a teacher, a colleague, a friend, a father, and a husband. lt is to him we dedicate this volume. After talking with the Great Lakes Regional Director, the three decided to petition for a charter from Delta Sigma Pi. During fall term, six students attended the Great Lakes Regional Conference in Zion, Illi- nois and received many ideas for fund-raising, social activities, community service projects, and general information on Delta Sigma Pi. Several fund-raisers were organized, and the first guest speaker was Robert Kurland from Hershey Chocolate Company, who discussed selling oneself to a potential employer. Tau Delta Gamma is a very enthusiastic group that is anxiously looking forward to initiation as an official chapter of Delta Sigma Pi. There have been many ups and downs but, with the support of the NCC faculty and brothers of Delta Sigma Pi, there is confidence of a suc- cessful outcome. -T - l 5 ii ii 3: if , 'i2'-- T i ' 'f -.-- 1 .Al- Gee, did you read that editorial this week? lt is a hum-dinger and I sure hope it does some good. Who walked off with my copy? l'd swear it was here a minute ago and now I won't be informed of all the campus events. These and many other comments were just a few of the remarks one was likely to overhear every Friday afternoon when the NC Chronicle was delivered. Comments of praise, of condemnation, and just plain comments are nothing new to the Chronicle staff. Criticisms are usually received, but orchids are in order also for the fine work our Chronicle has done for us this year under the leadership of Tom Nelson. Nelson performed the easy task of producing the Chronicle each week by himself in the dimly lit corridor of journalism in the basement of the Student Services Building. This year the Chronicle has been unusally efficient, using more pictures in the paper then in the past year or so, and keeping the campus up to date on the many things going on. The editorials by staff writers Roger Brosius, Allen Vander Meulen, Writer X, Ed Anger, John Hood, and Bill Glavin have been more than adequate. .-F' W iw , a QM. Q, - gi V Q ' ,L -.'f - Y, we I 1? Once again the men's cross country squad, under the guidance of Coach Al Carius, started off the Card's winning tradition with their sixth national title in 10 years of NCAA Division Ill cross country competition. Besides the high honor of claiming first in the nation at the small college level, the Cards also posted a new record low of 51 points at the NCAA meet in New York in November. Junior All-American Bob Dunphey finished sixth while Junior Jay Rogers and Junior Ray Krauss placed ninth and eighteenth respectively. The Cards also brought home the CCIW conference title as Cleull, Rodgers, and Dunphey placed 1-2-3 for NCC at the meet. Other runners for the Cards included Seniors Bill Wahl, John Leal, and Bill O'Neill, who was hampered by pre-season surgery but fought his way back to a spot in the cardinal line-up. 1983 should see the Cards remain as a favorite for the national crown as Bleull, Dunphey, Rogers, and Krauss will be back on campus for their third straight NCAA title. .ww -it T 5. it Ar , W 'Elf' -, -. .. 1'aaim.: gt gf Quik if Xi-F ai 'A' 45 as ,il vfrviik l -f lf-'JS LL,-x , i f-'ing' T-TV l 4. ,il-,aa-.,3' - - - 5.7 . 1, .1 , , ' af- ,lr-f N.. .- 1 A , Vx -4 M., .1 'S L25 -- f l' . Lady Cardinals National Champions The 1982-83 school year was a banner year for North Central College. The Cards took that sentence literally as the Lady Cardinal bas- ketball squad brought home the second NCAA championship of the season. The Cards 83-71 win over defending champion Eliza- bethtown KPAJ College gave Coach Wayne Morgan and his squad the first NCAA Division Ill title for North Central in women's basketball. On the court senior Bonnie Hansen directed the Cards with 732 points during the title chase. Hansen was named to the All- American lists of several organizations along with Kim Wallner and Wayne Morgan, who was named Division Ill Coach of the Year. Besides the All-Everything play of Hansen under both bas- kets the Cards saw more inspired play from Brenda Sanders with 308 points. Sanders also sat out part of the season with an ankle injury. Wallner had 547 points while senior Camie Loudenbeck had 401 points. Freshman Luvina Beckley and sophomore Margie White showed great promise for North Central's title defense in 1984. The Cards were 26-6 on the year in NCAA competition. The Lady cagers also received the first Chicago Metro conference title with little problem in the newly formed conference. The Cards finished their season with a 16-10 record, 11-5 in the CCIW and tied for second place in conference with North Park, Illinois Wesleyan and Augustana. Center-forward Mike McFadden, North Central's answer to Dr. J., led the cagers with 300 points, 144 rebounds and a .578 field goal percentage. McFadden's high flying slam dunks and inspired play kept the Cardinal fans on their toes for most of the season. John Giannini, Bill Marshall, and Tony Jordan started on a regular basis for N.C.C. and added 200 plus points over the season. The Cards will be losing two key starters from their line-up in the form of Van McCarty at guard and Chris Northrop at guard also. Northrop was named Mr. Clutch player for the season. Coach Bill Warden ended his second season at the helm with high hopes of staying in the CCIW race next year. Other team members included Amy Sanders, sec- ond singles 6-13g Sandy Keegan, fourth singles 8-8, Gwen Ridgway, sixth singles 9- 75 Sonia Rivas, Debbie Dean, Julie Davison and Cindy Boswell. Dust and wind ballooned the scores at the CCIW golf meet in May but North Central still came back to Naperville with a second place title for their efforts. Seven strokes off CCIW champion Millikin with 643, North Central re- lied on a solid starting five to help them during the 1983 season. Coach Harry Spataro was blessed with new transfers and a good base of juniors, seniors and underclassmen to keep his squad in the running. Co-captains Bill Smith and Dave Strey finished sixth and seventh at the confer- ence meet. Transfer golfers Ed Provow and Tom Hagmeyer played key roles in the crew this year as did junior Steve Mildred, Dave Townsend and Greg VanPoucke. 1984 should see the golfers once again in contention for a possible CCIW title. Dave Johnston at fifth singles also had a fine year with a 8- 4 mark. Besides that the squad was pep- pered with a wide range of talent from team captain Tom Nelson to first singles Rich Chang. Other standouts on the squad included Tony Seisser, Bob O'Connor, Pete Resler, Vince Baratta, John Hiestand and John George. Key wins came at Illinois Wesleyan, Kanka- kee and Lewis. The Cards will return a large portion of their squad and hopefully make a name for themselves between the white lines next year. s 5 , f Wrestling Even without a full squad of wrestlers, the NCC grapplin' squad managed to take sixth place at the 1983 CCIW wrestling meet. Dawn Schabacker turned in another blue-chip season as the hard throwing blond fashioned a 15-4 record with 105 strike outs. Schabacker was also named to the 1983 All- American squad. Baseball ' - A late season hitting drought by Cardinal bats kept the Cards out of first place in the 1983 CCIW pennant race, but the Cards finished the season with a highly regarded 10-6 record in conference play. First Stop: Seager lt's fun and games today at Seager Hall. Luckily for the guys of the fourth floor, this book won't be distributed until after their parents have decided to send them back for another year. lt would take too much space to print all of their names, even if we had the time or energy to do it. Alas, only their faces will go down in the annuals of anomy- mity. Besides, some of them might have to find jobs some- day. But we can't help but wonder Who is that masked man? I ul! awww Saaawtfiminff BLUE fgbe 5 T Il 107 Next Stop Student Village The most distinctive thing about the residents at Student Village is that most of them are old enough to buy their own beer. Life here is pretty quiet, especially on Monday mornings, after a long weekend, when the moon is full. Actually though, these students look fairly respectable. They dressed for the occasion. They even asked us to print their names. Unfortunately, they didn't offer us enough money. Y X '4- lg ii -n-Q71 - I Pack Your Lunches: It's a Long Haul to Seybert Yes, this is dorm Life at Seybert. First, President Gael Swing for giving us the run of the campus, his gracious understanding when he allowed us to interrupt both cabinet and board meetings to flash spots before everyonels eyes, and for all the promotional plugs he gave which have boosted sales tremendously. Secondly to Marvin Meinz. Without his cooperation and bottomless pit of photographs this book would be only half the size, Finally, but not leastly, to Mike Moser. During the summer freshman orientations he helped us to fill the creative holes in our staff, and was the calming force which led us through the crises of each publishers deadline. Our hats go off to these three in sincere appreciation for all their backing and support throughout the past year. Washington I fr' Et A The book is finished, I can't believe we actually pulled it off. Me, us with no experience, no know-how and no fear. Why did I decide to increase the number of pages to 176? Why did I want to cover every possible event? Why did I want all the students to be in the book? I don't know why, but l'm glad I did. I couldn't have succeeded in any of these endeavors without the help of my staff. Susan Koier, my right hand person and business manager, typist and support system was always there when needed. Linda Kinnucan, my photographer was relentless with the photos and developing. Barbara Hayes, the layout editor, did an excellent job with the layouts. Mary Vrochta, advertising editor, sold twice as many ads as last year. Special thanks to Jim Tweedy of Wycoff Photographers for his cooperation and fine photography. Finally, I would like to thank my biggest fan, Jack Briggs, for his constant patient understanding and encouragement. I hope this book brings back fond memories for many years to come. ?E',,4,,4,, M742 ,482-2 if , 1 E I I 1
