THIS YEARBOOK I A MEMORY ' FOR A TIME WE CALLED THIS PLACE A HDME ff' EOR THE YEAR GONE BK 5m New This place became our own. A place to have some laughs, talk to a friend, get crazy, and be ourselves. We learned about other people. How to get along or not to get along. We found we could make our own choices. And, how to live with those results. This may not have been the best place in the world, but it was a place to call home. Although some of us seem to have better times than others, we all managed to find happiness in our everyday tasks. Helping others, helping ourselves, and .. . well, at least getting our beauty sleep. And. after all, what are all the good times worth if we don't exper- ience some bad in trying to get there. Remember everyday's simple pleasures. 0 is 5131 52 When trying to escape the four walls of our room or the binders of our books, we found many places to harbor our thoughts and dreams. Maybe it was an escape to the nearby countryside at Fermilab, to watch a warm sunset. Possibly sitting by the cool crisp waterfall at McDowell Woods, on an Indian summer afternoon. Or a walk with a friend through the colorful memories of a day gone by at Naperville's Riverwalk. There are always places to go. Once we had been there, we could always revisit them in our minds. 1 3 Y ww, Q i, fa-e1. .5 -- -2 ijt it 9 Z Q gy , A .. . 5-n,.,,,,, , ,MV I J U , 7 j Yu' ' ' - -- ,, 1, 1' ' f Y . . The College Union Activities Board once again organized a variety of events to keep students busy throughout the school year. CUAB president Nancy Cawley and co- workers provided students with movies. dances, trips, and other activites. The three major events were Homecoming, Winter Carnival. and Spring Thing. Be- cause of the problems with student apa- thy, CUAB was forced to make some changes in their planning. The result was a dance aboard the 360 foot S.S. Clipper. which is docked at Navy Pier. Although the dance was on a Tuesday night it drew more people than any other event during the entire school year. This new thinking among the board will be transformed into a new variety of events and hopefully spur more interest among the students in the future. WONC x 1 'W This year's Spectrum Staff, under the direction of Editor Jack Arnston sought to turn the troubled book around with numerous changes. The foremost change was the addition of color. A total of 22 pages and I4O color pictures were put into this year's book. To go along with the color are a deluxe cover. special shadow weave paper, and an increase of the number of pages from l28 to l48. The changes were assembled into a book using a concept of lines throughout each section. This concept, new to NCC, was designed by assistant editor Susan Motzer. To go along with these changes, the staff imposed more rigid standards for the individual details of each page. No yearbook would be complete without quality pictures. Therefore, this year's Spectrum photographic division, under the direction of Mike Sullivan, gave special attention to all aspects of the photo taking. SPECTRUM facet mf! il 7 'ir -AZ. Eastman retired from North Central at the end of the l98l-82 academic school year. Dr. Eastman had been with the institution since l946. During his tenure, he formally served as professor of English. Dean of Faculty, and his final position as Professor and Chairman of General Studies. Dr. Eastman stepped down from his position as Dean because he wished to be more involved with the students. And involved. he was. For he was not only a professor. but a friend to each student he taught. Dr. Eastman will use his extra time to continue writing and publishing his own literature. He will belong remembered and truly missed by students and faculty alike. Dr. Eastman believed deeply in the liberal arts education taught at North Central. ln his speech to the graduating class of I98 I, he said. Five great powers of a true liberal arts education: openness to a complete life Qincluding its leisurebi an understanding of the past which shapes us? a grasp of the current social issues we must help to solve: flexibility in life commitment: the ability to recognize excellence whereever we look or act. 4 CONGRATULATIONS TO SA 5 GRADUCSAIQTLL-jg CLASS BELL FEDERAL K MART I2I5 EAST OGDEN NAPERVILLE IL 60540 LOCATED IN OGDEN MALL WE KNOW YOUR MONEY MATTERS DOG PA TCH INTERSTATE PET CENTER PALLET COMPANY FROM PuPPlEs TO GUPPIES LONG NME WE VE GOT THEM ALL 4202120 SUPPORTER OF NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE D59 B OGDEN MALL NAPERVILLE DOWNTOWN NAPERVILLE A OSWALD S PHARMACY 4 Servong Napervnlle Sance 1875 4 PRESCRIPTION If 10 W JACKSON AVENUE NAPERVILLE ILL Mon thru Fra 8 30 to 10pm 357 4400 Sat 84 Sun 8 30 to 9pm 4 4 RUSSELL STOVER CANDIES CASUAL DINING IN THE PIZZERIA 4 ALL pH0NE5 Wme and Beer Served EL 5 ZSQQ PIZZA PARTIES WELCOMED If 4 Party Dlscounts 39 W JEFFERSON NAPERVILLE JTK-L L L' I I The Original New York Style Pizza 1 , . -K - -Ip ' ff' 'K FLY JETS YOUR FIRST YEAR Your salary IS only a part of the fantastlc career that awalts you as an Amr Force pdot or navigator 'The Alr Force Hylng progran1 offers you more than SI7 889 a year to start plus valuable exper lence that can pay offln clvlhan hfe And your offlcers commlsslon wlll glve you strong executlve credentials proof of your leadership ablllty Alr Force benefits Include 30 days of paud vacatlon a year worldwide assignments rnedncaland dentd care graduate educanon opportunnles and more Its a great opportunity If you re a coHege senior or graduate between the ages of IO! and 27 you may be quallfled for the Alr Force Hylng progran1 Fund out today by contacting JUDY KMET Office Phone 2359C Plalnfleld Rd ewel CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 82 FROM OFFERING AN EXCELLENT MANAGEMENT TRAINING PROGRAM FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CONTACT JOHN BRADARICH IN CAREER PLANNING AND PLACEMENT Congratulations lllclcnme IJ- A550 Graduates NACS 4 and Underclassmen STUDENT FACULTY 4' Pouuoso 'Q 19 for academic and CLEGE f, ,Nnrth Clzntral Qlullege Zlllouk ,Store attainments Parents Assoclatlon Ill North Central College THE COLLEGE UNION THE HEART OF NCC Q - ff l O 2 .Q X z P ' 0 O l Us ' fo 2.3 SQ frie f l' l 0 oo fm - We X X ff fo 9 0,0 OS Og X 4:90 48-O ' Alf .audi J if, VJ W6 'HY ff ,ff ,W X 7 ll 2 'QQ WN ul 37 1 iw file fig A, WARRENVILLE RD HILTON NN Llsle!Napervllle C3123 369 0900 at the Halton C3121 369 0600 Warrenvrlle Rd Une b We re new In the western suburbs but there s nothing new about our commitment to excellence Hrlton Inns and Allgauer s Restaurant have earned a world famous reputation for providing only the best to their valued Customers Stop rn soon and let us prove rt to you lock East of Naperville Rd V ,...., . f.. The picture above is how I looked upon completion of the book. With thoughts of boating and skiing going through my mind, I lay here too exhausted to move. I would, however, like to finish with a few thoughts. When we began the school year we realized that we had a great task set upon us. Our job, if we chose to accept it, was to produce a yearbook of the highest quality and latest design. Sparing no expense. and devoting literally thousands of hours to the Spectrum, the staff and myself have compiled a yearbook -which we will compare to any in the schooI's past. This book not only possesses a custom cover, custom paper, and over I'40 color pictures, but also a very comprehensive coverage of the year's events. It is at thistime that I would like to thank Mike Moser for his help and understanding, Jim Bull and Josten's American Yearbook Company, and Sudlow Photographers. A special thanks goes out to the Spectrum staff for their help was greatlyappreciated. Mike Sullivan should receive a medal for his brilliance and dedication in the darkroom. Finally, I would like to thank my assistant editor, Susan Motzer. She was always there with encouragement and a helping' hand when I felt down. I hope you all are as proud of owning this book as I am of making it.
