CHESTER J Dr. Chester Attig, who passed away on April 5, 1947, was born sixty years ago, on a larm near Metamora, lllinois. l-le received his grade and high school education in Walnut, lllinois, and entered Northwestern Cnow North CentralD Qollege in 1904, as a member ol the class ol1908 Alter his graduation, Dr. Attig taught one year in Staples, Minnesota, and two years in the high school ol Leavenworth, Kansas. ln 1911, he was called bacl4 to his Alma Mater, to the chair ol l-listory,a position which he had held to the present. Meanwhile, he pursued graduate study at the University ol Chicago, being granted a fellowship in 1917-18. l-le was awarded the Doctorate ol Philosophy, with highest honors, in 1991, writing his thesis on Hlhe l-listory ol the Northwest Territory, 1787- 1808 l-le also wrote 'llhe l-listory ol North Central College and The l-listory ol First Evangelical Church, With a group ol nationally l4nown X Bible scholars, he worlced out an Synchronous l-listory ol Biblical limes, published in the l.arned l-listory series. l-le wrote many other articles lor scholarly meetings and periodicals. l-le was a member ol The American l-listorical Association, the American Geological Associa- tion, The Mississippi Valley l-listorical Associa- tion, and the l-listorical Society ol the Evangeli- cal Church. Dr. Attig was a Director ol the YMCA, a member ol the Naperville Council ol Religion, and Secretary ol the City Zoning Commission. l-le served as Trustee ol the First Evangelical Church lor many years and at the time ol his death was the superintendent ol the Sunday School. l-le was a member ol the recent merger General conlerence, at which time the Evangel- ical and Brethern churches were united. Dr. Attig was well l4nown lor his love ol music, and his vocal slcill. l-lis l'Sailor Beware and his A'Big Bass Vial never failed to please. l-le also led many Menis Glee Clubs, and directed the choir ol the First Church. .
