Dr. Finney Named Jefferson Pilot Professor of the Year Dr. Kenneth V. Finney, chairman and associate professor ofhistory at North Carolina Wesleyan College, has been named the Jefferson-Pilot Professor for 1988. At a reception honoring Finney, Wesleyan President Dr. Leslie H. Garner Jr. said, This award is well- deserved. Ken has proven himself as a teacher, a scholar, and a col- league who is vitally interested in promoting the welfare of this insti- tution. The Jefferson-Pilot Profes- sorship was created to recognize those special attributes. As part of the Professorship, Fin- ney Will receive a grant and a per- sonal computer, with appropriate software, provided by the college. Finneyjoined the Wesleyan facul- ty in 1973. He is a specialist in Latin American history and much of his scholarly work combines his inter- est in Latin America and economic and technological development. The Jefferson-Pilot Professorship is an endowed program made possi- ble by the Jefferson-Pilot Corp. The Professorship at Wesleyan was es- tablished in 1982. Criteria for the appointment include teaching excel- lence, scholarship, and commitment to Wesleyan. 15

The contest was performed before a SRO fstanding room onlyj audi- ence in the cafeteria! During the contest, the audience was treated to performances by notable entertainers, such as L.L. Cool J, The Su- premes, Salt and Pepa, Mary Jane Girls, Erik B. and Ra- kim, and Appolonia Six. In all, there were approximate- ly sixteen performances. The audience, when not being entertained by the contestants, were enter- tained by the MC of the night, Debbie Ward. Anthony Rice, Sybil Ban- ford, and David Banford were thejudges for the even- ing. The contestants were judged on their appearance, originality, and on lip sync. They received one to ten points in each category with a maximum score of thirty points. Cash prizes of S100 for first place, S50 for sec- ond place, and S25 for third place were awarded to the top acts. Tamara Oates, posing as Jody Watley, was the first place finisher. Kimberly Williams, posing as Anita Baker, was the S25 winner. The second place finishers were the Girls from North, posing as the Beach Boys and Fat Boys. T3
