Plans Made For Student Activity Building Monday, April 18. 1988 was at day that marked the beginning of some- thing new here on campus. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on this day for a new Student Activ- ity Building. The construction ofthe new build- ing was approved by Wesleyan's Board of Trustees at its February 19 meeting following several months of research and discussion by the board's Student Life Committee. Student Government Association members, and members ofthe ad- ministration. The building is supposed to be a 7000 square foot structure divided into a large multi purpose room, eleven offices, a conference room, recreation room, TY room, and a kitchen. Among those participating in the groundbreaking ceremony were Wesleyan President Dr. Leslie H. Garner Jr., Rocky Mount Mayor Frederick W. Turnage, Wesleyan trustees John Ferebec and Reese Bailey, Dean of Student Life Steve Cohen, Assistant Dean of Student Life Pamela Derrick, Director of Housing Tina DeI.aine, Director of Student Activities Anthony Rice. GARNER I AUGURATED AS Dr. Leslie H. Garner Jr. is the third President of North Carolina Wesleyan College. His inauguration on April 6th, capped two days of celebration and discussion ofthe fu- ture developmcnt of Eastern North Carolina, with a number ofstate and business leaders participating. In his Inaugural address he pledged the college's resources to prepare Eastern North Carolina for a prosperous future and to preserve the region's native culture. We are in the midst of the most profound economic transition of this century, Garner said, Yet all of us should realize that change can be positive. We can still hope for expanded eco- nomic opportunity for our citizens, and we still dream of the day when our cultural diversity can be a cause for celebration . . . mg 14 Garners Donate Tree To Campus About 1,000 guests and delegates from other colleges attended the event, which was held on the front lawn of the Braswell Administration Building on the Wesleyan campus. Judge Phil Carlton, chairman of Wes- 1eyan's Board of Trustees, presided over the inauguration ceremony.
