The Iran and Af- ghanistan crises topped the headlines and because of these events the United States was forced to evaluate the strength of their armed forces. After finding that the forces were not adequate, President Carter proposed the rein- statement of the Selective Service Act, commonly known as the draft. Carter suggested to Congress that nineteen and twenty year olds, both men and women, be required to register for the draft and that eighteen year olds be required to reg- ister the following year. Many people, both pro and con, voiced their opin- ions concerning the act of including women and the draft itself. The major con- cern was that a womans place was not in the armed forces and definitely not in combat. However, Carter said, that women would be drafted only for noncombat duty.
