Collins devoted to the higlwst ideals of the Methodist Church - Dr. Thomas A. Collins The President of North Carolina Wesleyan College Conscious of our obligation and opportunity for leadership in the continued growth and development of North Carolina Wesleyan College, we, the administration and faculty, dedicate ourselves to a Christian involvement with the students as persons of individual needs and abilities. We aspire to make this a community of learners, both teachers and students, who are committed to seek knowledge and truth, believing they are mutually inclusive. We propose to create an awareness of our stewardship responsibility to our Cod, our society, and ourselves for the abilities we possess and the education we attain within this community of learning. We urge each member of the college community to dedicate himself to the fulnllment of his role as a worthy member within a distinguished family of Christian institutions of higher leaming in the best tradition of the Methodist Church. The Student Government Association has three functional branches, they are the executive, the legislative, and the judiciary. Each branch has been established for a particular purpose. Chamell Rich Set retary This year the executive branch was headed by Guy Turner, president, Melvin Gay, vice-president, Charnell Rich, secretary, and Bill Gruver, treasurer. It has been mainly through their efforts and the efforts of past S.C.A. officers, that the Wesleyan student body has finally gained an influencing voice in college policy and procedure. This privilege is directed and coordinated through the senate, the legislative branch of the S.G.A. Through the senate students make Mlchael Pratt their own laws and approve recommendations 'momgy General for bettering the students' position at North Carolina Wesleyan College. The emphasis again this year was upon conditioning and speed, The defense seemed solid from the start, but the offense, which is more difficult to develop, needed a lot of work in order to acquire the necessary scoring piuich. The Bishops opened the 1965 season with a 3 to 1 victory over a strong Campbell team. However, after losing their second game 5 to 1 to Lynchburg College. a southern college soccer power, they went into a three game slump. But through the efforts of coach Bill Music, the addition of several outstanding players and the enthusiasm and desire of the team to win, they came back to salvage the season with a 5-5 record. v - .1-'.'. , 1, zz, ,- 'fitvzv ,7sq, , 1 1 is ,rdf , . It is through their fine individual and team efforts and the coaching of Don Scalf that Carolina NVesleyan College experienced its first winning basketball season. However, this year's team gave XVesleyan more than just a winning season for they did capture first place season honors in the D.I.A.C., bringing Vilesleyan its first athletic championship. Its efforts in the past were frustrating and that frustration reached a climax this year resulting in the athletic departments decision to remove the sport from its budget for the 1967 season. The 1966 team accumulated a dismal 2-13 record, winning only in games with the College of South Jersey and Richmond Professional Institute. However, it wasn't a poor season which brought baseball to such an abrupt end, it was a complete lack of student interest in the game. The student participated elsewhere. f 'No 3 1 ....W ' R' I . - . o. ' '- -I ,.' - ,Nl 4 , I , ..,.,,..,,.,.,q V - f .ww Q. .,,s...-54, . L-K 'fl'-a 5 ' ,gs , f,b6 J5-H431 1 iaf'. DANCE FEATURING THE SHIREllES 4 'li Wesleyan was fortunate this yea.r in having a number of top-named musicians and recording artists entertain for the college community. It was only through the combined efforts of the senior and sophomore classes that the social commission was able to sponsor the fabulous Shirelles in a Show and Dance, held here the evening of March 25. In an era when the public is very fickle and builds its idols rapidly only to kick them aside just as quickly and go on to new admiration, The Shirelles have endured with amazing consistency. With each new recording they have broadened their following by offering their public refreshingly new and different types of recordings clearly displaying their great talent. The popularity of The Shirelles was evident on our campus. Pictured on the right are the Shirelles, Almre are candid shots taken at the dance held here March 25. Brady, David A. unior Class The junior Class of North Carolina Wesleyan College entered the year with a full treasury and much optimism for a highly successful year. Unfortunately the year at best was mediocre. The class completed a project begun the previous year as a memorial to the late Miss Barbara Mary Miller, a Wesleyan economics professor, and Truong M. Nguyen, a fellow classmate. A gift of a newspaper rack and the first volume of the New York Times Index was made to the library in their memory. Several projects were begun, but only one, the sale of pennants at home basketball games proved profitable. With the beginning of the second semester the class of 67 elected Tim Isaacs and Al Stallings to fill the vacated positions of president and vice-president respectively. Bill Cruver will head senior year. Class ollicers pictured above are Blaine Adams, pres., Marilyn Shepard sec.g Bill Norton, vice-pres.g Terri Conway, treas. an 77' 'Cnr 7:7 Hl1'lIvnlv.u fn, Il Xngxm Iirnlgcrx. livllx X Hrlgmm.
