mm JOHN T. CALDWELL The contributions of North Carolina State to the advance- ment of the American society are immeasurably great. Though research, extension, and technical aid are a substantial part of our effort, the resident educational function is still the central concern. You who chose to come here for your higher education and hope to take away a diploma have reason to be proud of your undertaking and your success. Many ingredients contribute to the accomplishments of the American civilization. Among them are the widespread avail- ability of higher education, respect for useful learning, and intellectual freedom. The Land-Grant colleges and universities have pioneered in making these elements a real part of our national life. This is the spirit of your Alma Mater. May the decades unfold for you the blessing of your days at State. JOHN T. CALDWELL Chancellor of N. C. State [29]

ADMINISTRATION WILLIAM C. FRIDAY WILLIAM C. FRIDAY President of the Consolidated University I am privileged to express greetings and best wishes to the newest of my fellow alumni in this permanent album of the Class of 1954. You have been inducted into a fine tra- dition made precious by the obligation and the opportunity that it affords for service to your fellow man. I think there is no loyalty that glows with brighter fervor than that attaching to our Alma Mater. You will find that Alma Mater is also loyal to her sons and daughters and finds her greatest joy when they have broadest success and ful- fillment. I have no doubt that as the years go by you will from time to time leaf through these pages with ever increasing sentiment and appreciation. It is my wish that each passing year will find you increasing also in the realization of the ideals which you now hold and affection for N. C. State. [28]
