Ken Trowbridge breaks loose for a 20 yard touchdown which was his second against Carolina. After this additional 14 points the State fans were too hoarse to yell but the white handkerchiefs took the place of our voices. Rondy Harrell, the 185 lb. sophomore from Raleigh, breaks away around right end to add up yardage against Maryland. Keep an eye on this boy for the next two years. Claude Cibson is one of our promising sophomores.

This play produced another touchdown for State bringing the score up to 21 to against Carolina. It was Ron Podwika who took it over from the one yard line and giving State a victory 21 to 14. V.P.I, couldn ' t stop Podwika on this play as he tore in for 13 yards. Final score— State 14, V.P.I. 14. If one did not look at the final score he would think that State had a victorious season. Against many of our ten op- ponents we out ran, out passed, out kicked and in general out played them. We only lost by 40 points in the scoring battle, 160 to 120. We actually won the ground gaining race, compiling 1,746 yards against the opponents 1,634 yards. In kickoff returns we averaged 19.1 yards which was 5 yards over what our opponents averaged. We also led in punting, rushing per carry, and had less penalties and yards loss. What hurt the most was our passing: we completed only 40 per cent of our passes for 692 yards while the foes hit 54 per cent for 1,058 yards. However, we threw seven touch- down passes while being scored on only six times in this manner. Yes — by the statistics North Carolina State should have had a winning season, but the scoreboard was just a little off balance. We had the men, we had the team, but the breaks just weren ' t with us. [23]

Everyone in the conference respected State ' s defense. Here the Wolfpack smothers a Wake Forest halfback led by Larry Cill making the tackle. On this play he was able to pick up 16 yds. Due to the loss of 12 of our storting 33 players many sophomores were able to obtain invaluable experience on the field this year. In the backfield Randy Harrell did some fine stepping for a sophomore averaging 3.3 yards per carry. Claude Gibson is also another sophomore who may be a threat in the conference next year. Not only is he a good runner but he caught 5 passes this year for an average of 30.2 yards gained per catch. Jim D ' Antonio will also see action next year if he keeps up his pace. Jim averaged 4.1 yards per carry this year even though he saw limited action. As for weight in the line, we can ' t complain. Sophomore Dick Reynolds will probably be used to block up the hole at tackle with his 262 lbs. Dick isn ' t too fast but he sure can stop off-tackle plays. So for the next couple of years State should remain a real threat to any team it plays. Coach Earl Edwards has done a wonderful job in adding North Carolina State to the Football Kingdom here in the South. Our UNC friend seems happy but the score was 1 4-0 at this point. Oh well, maybe he was drunk!
