As you travel through the beautiful Tar Heel State, whether you are in Murphy, Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, or Wilmington or any other city, however large or small, there is one fact that you cannot help noticing; the influence of North Carolina State College. It is felt in some respect by every person in North Carolina, and that is true whether the person is a forester in the Mountains, an industrial worker in the Piedmont, or a farmer in the Coastal Plains. And it is true in the broadest sense, the campus of North Carolina State College extends through its services, to the boundaries of the state and beyond into the whole southern region. But the focal center of these widespread activities is the college campus in Raleigh, the Capitol City. The Western part of our great state is richly endowed with the treasures of

mother nature. Among her wonderful gifts are the endless forests, which range from the tall loblolly pine to the small dogwood, each playing a major part in the growth of industry in the western part of our state. The old folks still produce the homespuns, the counterpanes and other handicrafts; but the youth prefer to work in such modern plants as that of the big Enka Rayon Mill near Asheville, the paper plants at Canton and the new mill at Pisgah Forest, where the Ecusta Paper produces the paper for cigarettes made in the Piedmont from tobacco grown in the Coastal Plain. This is due, in part, to the technological help, in the way of trained foresters in forestry research, which has been by North Carolina State College.
