The Capitol building of North Carolina, seat of government for the state that Col. Harrelson served so well. COL. JOHN W. HARRELSON The untimely death of Colonel John W. Harrelson, chancellor emeritus of North Carolina State College, brought shock and sorrow to the State and the Institution which he loved so well and served so nobly. The Colonel was fatally stricken while delivering an address on March 12 at the dedication of the new D. H. Hill Library. He had worked with quiet dignity in many responsible positions to further the growth, development and advancement of North Carolina, and his beloved State College. Colonel was a great leader, a distinguished soldier, and a dedicated citizen who will be sorely missed by his many friends. Holliday Hall, wherein Col. Harrelson worked and planned for the advancement of State College.

Johnny Law on the job in 1955 in north carolina Colonel Smith and Major Speed working to reduce highway deaths 1955 was the big year for N. C. Safety Program. Under the capable guidance of Commissioner Edward Sheidt, Colonel James R. Smith and Major C. A. Speed, an safety program was launched, enforced with hot rod Fords, plain cars, speed watchers and radar. During the last 8 months of 1954, N. C. Traffic Rates were cut by 16 per cent. This placed N. C. with the third lowest fatality rate in the U. S. However, this is only a portion of the safety program. In addition to controlling highway speeding and accidents, the Safety Division of the N. C. Highway Patrol also trains over 12,000 high school students as school bus drivers per year. Working with N. C. State College ' s extension division, the Patrol initiated a 20-hour course in Driver Education. This was only the beginning of cutting the fatality rate in our state, which last year was 1,118. The Patrol ' s program extended beyond the Extension Program here at State. At the beginning of this year, they started a series of television programs on safety, impressing the people of North Carolina that it ' s their own lives in question. To some very few of us, the Patrol ' s speed traps have been considered a bother but to the majority of us they have been life savers.
