The Capitol building of North Carolina, seat of government for the state that Col. Harrelson served so well. COL. JOHN W. HARRELSON The untimely death of Colonel John W. Harrelson, chancellor emeritus of North Carolina State College, brought shock and sorrow to the State and the Institution which he loved so well and served so nobly. The Colonel was fatally stricken while delivering an address on March 12 at the dedication of the new D. H. Hill Library. He had worked with quiet dignity in many responsible positions to further the growth, development and advancement of North Carolina, and his beloved State College. Colonel was a great leader, a distinguished soldier, and a dedicated citizen who will be sorely missed by his many friends. Holliday Hall, wherein Col. Harrelson worked and planned for the advancement of State College.

that ' s how it was.... A little bit of tradition supplanted by a great deal of modernness sums up the characteristics of a growing school . . . N. C. State College. This fine balance between tradition and modernness provides a healthful atmosphere for rapid growth. And there was growth on many levels. Earle Edwards surprised the Conference with a football team that made State Alumni both proud and hopeful for next year. Speaking of Alumni, State ' s greatest alumnus, David Clark, whose name has become a tradition at State, worked as hard as ever in 1955 to keep the School in the place it so well deserves . . . first!
