Faculty Council NORTH CAROLINA STATE Hardly could the members of the State Legis- lature of 1888 have realized the importance of the bit of legislation they passed creating the North Carolina State College of Argjculture and Me- chanic Arts. Only the most forward-looking of those legislators could have visualized a school that would rise to importance among the educational institutions of North Carolina, founded as it was to teach the lowly arts and sciences of agriculture and mechanical skills. From its meager beginning with one building, seventy-two students, and eight faculty members, State College has steadily and progressively grown, so that its campus of one hundred twenty-five acres and forty-five buildings is no longer able to accommodate all of the thousands of students who are seeking to enroll. Today N. C. State is recog- nized, not only as a leading college in North Caro- lina, but also as one of the outstanding schools of the South. Located in the capital city of the state, symbolic of the intimate contacts it has with the lives of North Carolina citizens, State College is ever striv- ing to be of more service in solving the agricultural and technical problems of our great state and nation.
