But graduation also brings the realization of more than just academics; each of us, as dictated by our own ingenuity, has reserved some special place at this school for him or herself. If not on the sports rosters, scholarship list, or student representative boards, at least — and more importantly — in the hearts of each other. No matter how much we have complained these two past years about the food, administration, homework, or hall matters, the experience — good and bad — has helped us grow to become more aware of our own and others ' needs. It is this thoughtfulness, this caring, that has made this school our home. If it is not the buildings and classes that will remain in our hearts for the years to come, then it is most certainly the people. We must all take with us what we have found here, about ourselves and about others, to wherever our respective roads may take us. As we pack our bags and hug each other goodbye, some never to see each other again and others to spend another four or more years together, we will wonder what happiness we will find in the time to come. And we hope. We hope that we will have years in the future as important, and friends as loving, as those we have had here. To my classmates, good luck. Dear Mom and Dad, Sorry I haven ' t written in a while. You know how things get at school. The list of things to do is never-ending. I ' m in a nostalgic mood, so I ' m writing this letter. Remember when at the beginning of the year when I ' d call you every day and write a 5-page letter every other ? I was so homesick! Yep, I can remember some of those initial bad times: roommate problems, massive workload, lack of Mom ' s food, little freedom, Tuesday Evening Series on nights that I had not even begun my homework. What if I had gone the well- traveled road at my old high school? What would it have been like? Orientation Week gave us a chance to get to know this special place and these wonderful people. It seems only yesterday that I walked down the hall not knowing anyone, but seeing a warm, open smile on every face. It was only days before we began to know each other, and all my tears turned to dust. We all became so close during the course of the year — living, learning (sometimes, struggling), eating (wow, some of those deep conversations at dinner debating and sharing our joys and sorrows together. All together. I know now I chose the right roai This is just the beginning, for the road of learning never ends. And I ' ll be back next year to continue my travels. Signed, A junior at NCSSM P.S. So many choices! Courses this year were more diverse than ever, ranging from the Jordan Lake Project to the popular Soviet semi- nar. It was hard to resist the temp- tation to overburden ourselves, to take so many classes as, in the words of Dr. Youngblood, to be spread as thin as a mononuclear film. Study groups formed constant- ly, like mushrooms after rain. There were also Shabazz skits, chem labs and the night-before rush on Teague ' s calculus work- sheets. Courses such as Astronomy and Wisdom, Revelation, Reason and Doubt (WRRD, fondly pro- nounced weird! ' ) took up large amounts of time but, in the end, were wel I worth it. We knew if we had taken the other, more famil- iar, road, so many options would not be available to us. The emphasis on individual study for Special Projects Week, designed to give students a chance to pursue in depth a particular in- terest, gave us more of an opportu- nity to branch out. Certainly, there were many de- cisions to be made regarding the roads taken to achieve our goals. Curriculum I I Charles R. These are just a few of the questions that students asked and answered for themselves during Special Projects Week. Th is week is designed to allow students to pursue their personal interests in depth. This year, all activities were student-initiated and had faculty or staff sponsors. In addition to the daytime projects, evening activ- ities such as roller skating, game night, bowling, and movies were organized. The culmination of Special Projects Week was Sharing Night, during which the students displayed and discussed the results of their week ' s work. PROJECTS WEEK 40 Curriculum Curriculum 41 42 Curriculum Do you study only science and math? is a com- mon question from outsiders. Hardly! Our interests are far-reaching, and NCSSM provides for our needs. Courses are available in music (Wind Ensemble, String Ensemble and Electronic Music), art (Photography, Ceramics and Mechanical Drawing) and Sports Medi- cine, to name a few. We are encouraged to initiate our own seminars with a faculty sponsor according to our varied and sometimes bizarre interests. Curriculum 43 AFTER HOURS I shall be telling this with a sigh . . . Dorm life makes our high school a unique experience. Each dorm, with its own style and per- sonality, creates a special type of jnity. Hallmates. What would we do without them? They provide riendly help with our homework, advice for our romantic eyes, a houlder to cry on, or simply a smile. But . . . white-glove room in- spections, hall meetings the night before a big calculus test, the day of the competition and not a shread of decorations on the hall, getting caught on the phone after midnight, forgetting to sign out . . . Grin and bear it was sound advice to overcome those incon- veniences, because good times al- ways followed: parties with our faculty adoptees, dorm invita- tional dances, the Christmas de- corating contest, hall theme dances, 10:30 pig-out sessions, the new intervisitation policy, in- novative dorm and hall T-shirts and the guidance of our RA ' s. Here at NCSSM, we have made some of the best friends we ' ll ever have. For juniors, we can happ ily say, We ' ll be back! For seniors, it ' s with a sigh and a tear that we leave this place we have come to call home. After Hours 4 5 There are many small things that make up the campus life at NCSSM . . . just lounging . . . 9-10:30 gatherings ... oh, joy, it ' s Fri- day! . . . spirit week . . . dorm meetings . . . riding home together . . . dinner (not always so great) . . . the cat . . . room inspection — or lack thereof ... S M sports started out with a clean slate iis year, and an enthusiasm that didn ' t aver. The program is at somewhat of a disadvantage due to the emphasis of the chool; still, several of the fall teams, not- bly girls ' volleyball and girls ' tennis, had trong records. Winter came, and again everal of the teams (men ' s swimming, for nstance) came away with impressive showings, while others suffered only from lack of depth, not lack of skill. Several individuals earned a chance to compete in sectionals. Injuries were minimal. Fan vans were consistent in giving stu- dents a chance to show school spirit and cheer for their favorite sport. Always, a cheering section developed to cheer on our players. Athletics coordinator Branson Brown is enthusiastic about the outlook for the spring season. 144 players are participat- ing in different sports. As spring rolls around, we look hopefully at the new play- ing field which soon will have grass in want of wear. Time Out 59 GIRLS ' TENNIS 60 Time Out The volleyball team made the biggest turnaround in NCSSM sports history. The spikers, coached by Nancy Hester, re- bounded from a 2-3 record in 1983 to 12-3. The team set a record for most victories in a sea- son, breaking the previous mark of 11 wins by the 1982 baseball team. Seniors Karen Kinsey and Sandra Watson paced the vol- leyballers to set tne standard fu- ture Unicorn sports teams must strive for. V o L L V B A L L Time Out 61 o Coach Branson Brown and co-captains Nancy Smith and Karen Kinsey led the ladies ' basketball team this year. Ten of the players were juniors, including Ginger Morgan, the leading scorer. Although they didn ' t have a winning season, the girls worked hard and kept their spirits high. £ i ,4 62 Time Out Under the leadership of coach Scott Hawkins and co-captains William Turner and Eric Schmitt (the top scorer), the men ' s basketball team finished its toughest season ever in terms of opponents and length. Victories were scored over Chatham Central, North Moore, and the N.C. School of the Arts, and several games were within 5 points. Fan support was greater than ever this year. Time Oul 63 WRESTLING The wrestling team, led by captains Ken Clark, Daniel Kemper, and Erich Buehler, finished the season with an overall 3-5 record. These fi- gures are not a good reflection of the team ' s success, howev- er, since the team was lacking in the number of represented weight classes. Six of the nine starters obtained winning re- cords; several competed in sec- tionals. 64 Time Out CROSS COUNTRY The cross country team, with cap- tains Ty Lowry and Amy Bingham, had a 6-18 record this year. Juniors Mark Ledbetter and Amy Bingham ran some of the fastest times for the team. In the sectionals, the girls placed ninth, and the boys ranked 18th. Time Out 65 SOCCER! 66 Time Out I ' The boys ' soccer team ' s record of 6-8-1 is not indicative of its competitive nature. Most of the team ' s losses were by two goals or less. The team, coached by Kevin Bartkovich, weathered injuries and a rigorous schedule to make a strong showing at the end of the season with the help of captains Michael Taylor and George Verghese. ut UNSINKABLE UNICORNS The Unsinkable Unicorns enhanced their reputation as they swam strongly through their second season, led by senior captains Beth Hinshaw (also girls ' MVP), Paul Janecek, Maria Kelly, and Robb Win- ters (guys ' MVP). The guys finished with an impressive 6-2 record. Despite having few- er swimmers than their competitors, both teams performed well. Several of the swim- mers qualified for competition in section- als, where Winters placed fifth. 68 Time Out SPRING SPORTS ' ' FEVER Time Out 69 MM LIFE SUPPORT And that has made all the difference. We may not always appreciate the services we are provided, but we can hardly do with- out them. College applications and other con- cerns, for example, are handled by the Guid- ance office. Our safety and protection are looked after by security; Nurse Nancy Simeonsson provides us assistance with our minor ailments; Resident Advisors are avail- able for support and guidance. The library serves as a source of information and study atmosphere. Regarding those elusive laundry machines, enough said. All of these services are integral to the completiorrof tfie roads we choose to follow. Dances, movies, and bus loops are the re- sults of hard work by the Student Activities Board. Through various publications, stu- dents are able to express their opinions and develop their journalistic interests. Students themselves provide services to the school and surrounding community. Our work service hours are invaluable to the teachers and other staff members we help. Community service students aid various non- profit organizations in Durham, while Men- torship students work with the surrounding community, gaining experience in an area of personal interest. Each of these services makes a difference in how our community works. Life Support 71 Residential Life Above: Sandra Jackson, Secretary; Kathleen Benzaquin, Dean of Students. The continuous addition of new materials lends it as a source of information for assignments and independent research. Its importance as a quiet study spot was well-documented by its popularity during the weeknight hours between 7 and 9; obviously, it was valuable as a reference hot spot for obscure science-symposium questions . . . Life Support 75 76 Life Support STUDENT SERVICES A letter from home. A chance to get the wash done without having to lug it all the way home. We often tend to take for granted many of the conveniences we have at NCSSM — that is, until we ' re unlucky enough to lose some change in a vending machine. The community that has been created for us here can ' t replace the ones we left behind, but these services - and others we aren ' t constantly aware of — make our lives run a little smoother. Besides, where else can you get an official NCSSM shirt? Life Support 77 WORK SERVICE Would you like to work indoors or outdoors? Seal your fate with one check mark on your preliminary Work Service form. Is Work Service all that bad? Amy Roscoe and Andy Ward don ' t seem to think so, but Marty Hodgin and Raphael Malveau might not agree. No comment from Kevin Pint. The assignment is only for a semester, but you can do it again if you like . . . RA Neil Mashburn matches the student workers with the services they provide three hours a week. Since juniors have to spend only one semester in the cafeteria or on grounds duty, they don ' t have to sling hash and toss dirt all year. Renu Karamchandani, for example, works in an office. 78 Life Support Life Support 79 80 Life Support The Student Activities Board was busy this year keeping the students involved and entertained. SAB work service students provided dances, bus loops, transportation and tickets to games and plays, air band contests, the haunted house, bonfires, and more under the supervision of RA ' s Tony Langley and Frank O ' Neal. Life Support .81 The community service program, coordinated by RA Neil Mashburn, offers enlightening experiences for NCSSM students. Through the program, students get involved with the community and the community gets involved with NCSSM. Some of this year ' s work sites included N.C. Museum of Life and Science, Durham County General Hospital, the local YWC and Durham Public Library. COMMUNITY SERVICE i 82 Life Support I Mentorship is one of NCSSM ' s most unique opportunities. Through the program, participating students get a taste of the world of research, technology, or business as it actually exists. Sites of such experience include Duke University Medical Center, N.C. State, UNC, and Research Triangle Park. Mentorship coordinator Marilyn Link matched the students with their sponsors. To both the mentors and the students, our mentorship program is a valuable real-life experience. Life Support 83 Keepin ' the Faith Girls Just Want to Have Fun 84 Life Support PUBLICATIONS Want to get into print? NCSSM offers several outlets for students with writing and artistic talent. Beyond the Wall, a state and national news roundup, and The Stentorian, the student newspaper, are for students who want to write often. For young poets and writers of long, thought-provoking pieces, NCSSM offers The Blue Mirror, a literary magazine, and The Open Mind, a collection of essays and poetry. The Odyssey, the school yearbook, is a showcase of the best student photography. And on the lighter side, Chronicles of the Speaking Unicorns captures the humorous ironies of everyday life. Life Support 8S ODDS ' N ' ENDS I kept the first for another day! Activity after activity! For those times when we needed an escape from academics, clubs provided an inviting op- tion. With the restriction of a 24-hour day, we had to be selective in our extra- curricular participation, but boy did we have choices! Clubs offered opportunities to get to know other students and to meet teachers after hours as people, rather than as FACULTY. Through clubs we were able to pursue our interests. Hypatia, Math Club, Science Club and Chi-Squared were for the mathematically and scientifically oriented. Outdoor Club, Debate, and Gospel Choir, among others, relieved the tension after school. If students couldn ' t find a club they liked, they could make up their own. These odds ' n ' ends brought students together and gave direction to interest and talent. Each to his or her own path. Odds ' n ' Ends 87 88 Odds ' n ' Ends Student Council president Tab Hunter worked hard to uphold last year ' s vow to promote student body en- thusiasm . Along with offi- cers Robb Winters and Mike Drozd, senior and junior reps, and sponsors Dr. Vir- ginia Wilson and Mr. Jim Li- tle, the council planned many activities and worked as a bridge between students and the administration. Veterans week, Speak-up meetings, Spirit week and the Fun Shows were all pro- ducts of thecouncil ' s branch committees. Through elec- tions new amendments were passed, and the judicial board and educational plan- ning committee members were selected. Other pro- jects of the student council included senior privileges, newsletters, network polls, presidential debates, senior gift trip dinner, controver- sial issues, club charters, the change machine, and more. Odds ' n ' Ends fl9 Mrs. Marilyn Link, popularly dubbed “Missing Link”, spent her first year as the club ' s new advisor. Her energy and innovative ideas brought new life to the Science Club. SCIENCE CLUB The Science Club offered many paths for everyone ' s varied interests this past year. Activities ranged from symposiums to competitions, such as Duracell and Olympics of the Mind, a national creative problem-solving event. In the regional meet, NCSSM made an impressive showing, claiming first place in all three categories entered: “Music, Maestro, Please , “Ecology Dozer , and Compound Fracture . 90 Odds ' n ' Ends MATH CLUB Meetings of the Math Club this year concentrated on the working of tournament problems. Led by sponsor Kevin Bartkovich, members competed at regional tournaments, including Davidson College and Charleston. QUIZ BOWL Dr. Gerald Wilson and his Quiz Bowl troop built up steam with a series of successful scrimmages and carried the enthusiasm through for the rest of the season. Team members were Jeff Cherry, Jeff Yu, Dawn Groenke, Heath Hart, Keith Privett, Lynn Hooker, Jonathan Jordan, Philip Mauskopf, and Jimmy Hanks. Odds ' n ' Ends 91 CHI-SQUARED New on campus this year was Chi-Squared, a science dub geared towards future female scientists. Sponsored by chemistry faculty members Ruth Zweidinger and Carolyn Morse, the girls heard female lecturers and participated in such activities as building radios and making cheese. The club also collaborated with the Hypatia Society, the female math club. DEBATE The speech and debate team kept busy this year under the coaching of former RA, Tom Boddie. The team was talented in both debate (novice and varsity) and individual events. The forensics team attended meets at UNC, Wake Forest University, Philadelphia, High Point Central, and West Charlotte, and a strong showing was made at the District and State tournaments. 92 Odds ' n ' Ends OUTDOOR CLUB AND GOSPEL CHOIR Under the leadership of Ron Maxwell and president Sam Miller, the gospel choir stayed busy this year. The group averaged 1 performance and 2 practices per week, including appearances at the VA Hospital, Davidson, Lumberton, and Wallace, as well as many local churches. The Outdoor Club is loosely formed to allow stu- dents a pathway fororganizingexcursions. At’all tripto Hanging Rock was planned by Andrew McCallum and Karen Yeowell, and sponsored by Dr. Britton. Spring plans included Shining Rock Wilderness and Stone Mountain. Odds ' n ' Ends 93 From selling dough- nuts and carnations to selecting a disc jockey, the prom committee worked hard to make this year ' s prom special. We Knew that all that hard work was worth it on May 4, when we found that Sweet Dreams Are Made of This in the Sheraton Ballroom. This year, the Arts Club was established. VIP ' s in- clude advisor Joe Liles, president Elizabeth Wells, and officers Gina Norman, Kim Chavis, Kenny Gahagan, and Ken Clark, through informal seminars, such skills as calligraphy, silk screen- ing, and pottery were taught. The Arts Club has no formal attendance policy; it was founded with a relaxed attitude and a philosophy that made interest rather than skill the prime requisite for joining. Odds ' n ' Ends 95 CATALYST The Catalyst Program, started with the help of Dee Dolby, is an exercise club run by activ e students to promote physical fitness. This year, Catalyst was headed by president Anthony Jones. Student coordinators were in charge of the various activities, such as ka- rate, weight-lifting, aerobics, dancercize, jogging, and skating, as well as off-season training programs for soccer and track. The ability to choose a favorite form of exercise increased enthusiasm and fitness.
