There are many who teach, but few who can be labeled master teachers. Dr. O. W. Underhill was one of those rare teachers who could consume knowledge, and then share it with all with whom he had contact. He was compatible with brilliant students as well as slow learning students. He dared them to think deep, wisely and realistically. He had the talent to inspire them to reason, to explore, to deduct, all of which are difficult for a deaf student. In retrospect, it seems that the master teacher’s talents should never be stolen to do administrative tasks: Many students lost an opportunity to be taught by him, because he was asked to fill an administrative position. Society however, does not reward, the master teacher commensurate with the executives, so too often the master teacher’s art is wasted. Dr. Underhill never once let the deaf In Memoriam Dre Ow Underhill 1887-1967 student use deafness as an excuse. He urged them to be a part of the hearing community, and he set a pattern for them to emulate. Self sufficiency was a part of his religion, and his teaching always reflected the need of individ- ual effort, independence and personal dignity in all deaf citizens’ endeavors. He has concrete memorials, such as the Dr. O. W. Underhill Gymnasium, and honorary degrees, yet the most edifying memorials are many successful deaf citizens who each day contribute to the betterment of the state and nation. Each one has been stamped with Dr. Underhill’s special brand, which requires each to ask for no favors, but enables each to meet the world face to face and succeed. Dr. O. W. Underhill (Odie), has passed on, but he lives on in thousands of lives that will reflect his influence for many years to come. — B. E. H, thirty-one
