Williams Lacking the eloquence to express ourselves adequately in our words of dedication to Mrs. Williams, we are borrowing from Norman Cousins in his writing about Dr. Albert Schweit- zer. We feel that Mr. Cousins’ remarks about Dr. Schweitzer say for us what we feel to be, in her first year as Assistant Principal of the Upper School, one of Mrs. Williams’ biggest assets. “The greatness of Schweitzer — indeed the essence of Schweitzer — is the man as symbol. It is not so much what he has done for others, but what others have done because of him and the power of his example. This is the measure of the man.” If Mrs. Williams is sometimes hard _ to find, it is because she is in such close touch with all of her teachers and students. BUSINESS MANAGER | NFORMAT ION | - Be Superintendent Mr. Ben E. Hoffmeyer Commencement is too often thought to be a cere- mony of finishing. However, the first definition given in the dictionary for Commencement is: “time of com- mencing.” I urge you not to think of Commencement as an end of learning, but the beginning. There is a never ending explosion of knowledge bursting around us, and each of us should continually be searching for knowledge. There is no shortage of opportunities in today’s world. There is only a shortage of qualified, energetic, trustworthy, loyal people to take advantage of oppor- tunities. The Class of 1966 qualifies in every way to take advantage of opportunities. We have confidence that success will be yours. Ss a i ili ee Business Manager CO vy Accounting Clerk Mr. William J. Gamble Jr. Mr. Delmas U. Jockisch It was the year 1986. I had been injured in an auto accident. After several months in the Killdare Hospital I had improved considerably under the wonderful care of Kaye Snakenberg who had become the head of the registered nurses there. But still my memory wasn’t very clear, so I visited the famous psychiatrist, Dr. R. L. Stuckey. He suggested that I try to relive many of my past experiences and revisit old haunts to help restore my memory. I started by visiting my old home place to think back on my childhood, but that didn’t help. Then I thought of visiting N.C.S.D. to re- new my school days there. How N.C.S.D. had changed and grown! The children lived in lux- ury and had all the freedom they could ask for. They were ahead of public school students both academically and in sports. Marvelous! I decided to get at the root of these changes. To my astonishment Mr. Hoffmeyer had retired and Jack Mitchell, who was chosen as the most likely to succeed during our senior year, had become the superintendent. All the members of the staff were deaf workers. Dianne Cooley had succeeded Mrs. Williams as Assistant Princi- pal of the Upper School. Vickie Tart, who had loved supervising when we were classmates, had become Chief Counselor of Main Building. The Deaf were building a world of their own! At the Vocational Rehabilitation Center I was surprised to find that Mike Cooke was the head. He was busy on a research project on the accomplishments of the Class of 1966. He invited me to tag along. I gladly accepted. I explained about my brain injury and said that I hoped that it would be a good memory re- fresher. First we located Mr. Ray Blanks who, we found, was the boss of the account keepers at a gambling house in Reno, Nevada. He was also the owner of a brewing plant, but he hadn’t had a drop to drink in years, as his beautiful wife, Sandra (nee McAbee), didn’t permit it. After bidding them goodbye, we started to California. As we were driving through the country-side, a sports car zoomed past us with several other cars close behind. Soon we were ushered off the road and told that a James Bond movie was being filmed near this location. 28 The director, in dark glasses and wearing a flashy sports coat, met us. The minute he took off the dark glasses I recognized him as Tommy Edwards who had turned from offset photo- graphy to being a movie director. Judy Phillips was the star being rescued by Bond in the movie. She invited us out for dinner that night in Hollywood and explained how she had be- come a movie star. It all seemed to have come from the charm and beauty which had won her the title of N.C.S.D. Homecoming Queen. After a good night’s rest we left for Alaska on a jet airliner. To our surprise Fredna Mc- Knight and Pat Cornett were stewardesses. We enjoyed a lively conversation, which it seemed had only started, when we landed in Alaska. There we were met by Elaine Boyd. Fredna and Pat had radioed her to meet us. Elaine told us that Alaska was now a crowded state and that she had volunteered to teach Christ- ian principles to the Deaf there. She had been elected first woman president of the Baptist Convention. Mike asked Elaine if she knew where we might check up on Lillian Wilkinson. She said that she had seen Lillian at one of the Baptist Conventions in Florida. My mind and body were both becoming cold in that northern climate, so Mike and I struck out for Florida to get warmed up. There we met Lillian, who had always loved the Flor- ida sun, and had become the proud owner of a famous beauty and weight-reducing school. At the time Judy Burleson was getting a treatment for sunburn. She had come for her yearly vaca- tion. She told us that she had been graduated from King’s Business College and was teaching a business course at Gallaudet College. Mike and I then found that our time and money were both running low and that we had better start back to good old Tarheelia. We stopped at the Eastern Carolina School for the Deaf where we met Judith McGee and her hus- band who were counselors there and were mak- ing a fairly good living. After thanking them for their hospitality, we set forth to N.C.S.D. Later I decided to write a story about our trip and, to my surprise, I realized that I hadn’t forgotten anything that had happened on the trip. My amnesia was gone! Where there is de- termination, there is success, as Dr. Stuckey had said. CLASS WILL By Elaine Boyd The Class of 1966 of the North Carolina School for the Deaf, being in mens sana in corpore sano, do herein declare this to be our last will and testament. We bequeath to the Class of 1967 all of our senior privileges as well as our responsibilities. I, Ray Blanks, leave my habit of eating and being restless all the time to Roger Moss. I, Elaine Boyd, leave my love of reading to Carolyn Shaffner. I, Judy Burleson, bequeath my chasing after Jerry Phillips to Barbara Morton. I, Mike Cooke, leave my golden blond head to Barbara Morton. I, Dianne Cooley, bequeath my height to Pamela Reynolds, hoping that everyone will ask her how tall she is, as they have always asked me. I, Pat Cornett, give my love of drinking Pepsis to Nell Phillips. I, Tommy Edwards, bequeath my roughness in playing football to Larry Swinney. I, Virgil Jockisch, leave my Christian influence to Dean Alexander. I, Sandra McAbee, bequeath my dark beauty to Mary Gibbs. I, Judith McGee, give my mischievous disposition to Bethel Cabe. I, Fredna McKnight, leave my habit of going home every Friday to Patty Joyce. I, Jack Mitchell, bequeath to Jerry Phillips my hope of making a good living and my dreams of owning a new car. I, Judy Phillips, give my habit of bringing new clothes from home after each weekend to Joyce Smith. I, Kaye Snakenberg, leave my love of having a wealth of mate- rial things to Doreen Rogers. I, Ricky Stuckey, bequeath my many goof-offs during football games to Brian Brizendine. I, Vicky Tart, leave my habit of chewing gum with my mouth open to Catherine Parrish. I, Lillian Wilkinson, bequeath my love of eating to Rachel Stone with the hope that she will be able to control it better than I have. In witness thereof, we affix our seal. Witnessed by: Mrs. J. M.
