OUR XORTH CAROLINA COLLEGE Fifty years ago it was but an idea. Then the late Dr. James E. Shepard recognized the need for trained Xegro ministers to act as leaders for the race, and he set about raising monev to establish a training school. As a result of Dr. Shepard ' s efforts. 10 buildings on a 25-acre tract, known as the National Religious Training .School and Chautauqua, were erected in 1910. The passage of years found the school changing its original aims and means of financial support. Sold and reorganized in 1915. the name of the institution was changed to the National Training .School. Financial difficulties plagued the institution, causing it to become state supported and thereby effecting the need for another name change. .-Xccordingly. in 1923. the National Training .School became the Durham State Normal .School. Fm ther building additions and changes in its aims caused a need for still another name change for the institution. This time the school became the North Carolina College for Negroes. Today, named the North Carolina College at Dinham. the institution occupies some 62-acres and has thirtv-six buildings of modern brick construction. It offers .31 undergraduate courses in subjects that range Irom art to oolog . It also offers a graduate school of arts and sciences, a school of public health education, a school of hygiene and public health, a school of law. and a school of library science. The school has graduated students who ha e contributed significantlv in e erv field of endeavor. We then, the proud staff of the Golden .Anniversary EAGLE, offer this yearbook as a tribute to the institution ' s fifty vears of progress, a memoir book of the 1960-61 school year, and a suggestion book of the future development of our beloved alma mater — North Carolina College at Durham.
