We rejoice in the prospect of these cliallenging exjicriences for you. If you love North Carolina College — and I know that you do — then let your love be reflected in your determination to fulfill the highest hoi)es that we will make an important contribution to the glory of your Ahna Mater. The second inijiortant contribution to your Alma Mater is to see to it in vour various conununities that the opportunities oi)en to the next o-eneration of youth will be greater than those which you enjoyed. It is equally important for you to do all that you can to help deserving youth of the next generation get the kind and quality of education which will enable theni.as you did, to prove their worth in the times in which they sliall live. You have my best wishes and it is my hope that your efforts wdl be rewai ' cled with success and hap))iness. Sincerely yours. A. Elder 3n jWemoriam He was a warm ami frloiullv man who instilled the ideals of service and etiieieuey into many nenerations oi students This statement made hy his close friend, James T. Taylor, most nearly descrilies V. T. Wdhs as he was att ' ectionately known to the faculty and students at N.C.C. Mr. Willis came to N.C.C. when it was a small institution and the Com- mereia.l I)e|iartment that he headed for so many years was a two-teacher department. He had the , p|Mn-tuiuty that is oivcn few, t.i make it -row and i row with it. From that -arly heninnini; ' the deiiartment has orown fi-om two teachers to nine teachers, from the one and two rooms to a new huildinn ' . He surrounded himself with well-trained young men and women: he was ncvei- afraid of eoinpetition and he sought advancement and recog- nition for his faculty. Mr. Willis watched the growth of the new huilding from the first hriek. One of the |.ict ires that we will retain of him will he one showing him stand- ing hy Ins window looknig over the cam|uis and m.iking pl.ins for the Commerce IJuilclnig. Eagle ineiiti ence record s miiilea r. Hnnvn and 17-7 The stin-v of NCC haskrtl.all this year is not one usual ])atterii. ehanipionsliip teams, a dismal one eitln The 1955-5(1 season has been one of many ex])erimei for coach Floyd Brown and liis domiiiantly yearlii squad which finished the siason .iliove the 5(1(1 mai a record of 11-10 and tliir CIAA conference race. This marked Brown ' s fi the Eagle Cagers and listt them. In 1.052-53. his first y led the Eagles to a 15-t over-all. That year the locals finished second in the conference .and got an invitation to compete in the N ' AIA district jilay-off at Nashville. Tennessee, where his hoopsters were defeated in the opening roniid by Tennessee State. 98-94. Tliis marked the first time that Negro colleges received invitation to this post-season aft ' air. 195.3-54 saw Brown ' s constantly-elianging chili win a surprising 23 games while losing only 5. Again they were invited to the N. I, meet in Nashville, and advanced to the final round, only to be eliminated 79-59 by the same Tigers from Tennessee State. The 1954-55 season, when Brown lost four men off his first team with only Charley Barrick returning, tin y won 20 games and dropped 7 to go on and win the con- ference crown for the secoinl strai hoopsters closed the seasini with streak to soar from third spot tn conferenre standings with 19 xieturies and only 2 set- It.ieks ill ((oifereiice coin])etition. Refusing to be denied the Eagles came back with a sound victory over a strong ' irginia Union club (60-57) in Richmond. Unable to juit together a consistent win streak, the young Eagle i|iiintet lost their next two games to the fast-breaking Winsttm-Salcm Rams (61-71-) and the undefeated Mary- l.and State Hawks (71-82). The Eagles took to the ro.ad for a two-game series and hooked two sound defeats on the Howard University Bisons (72-69) and on the Morgan State Bears (75-71), thanks to the sterling pcrformanees of Charley Badger. who seemed to li.ive regained his peak form, and sub Dori.in Parreott. who broke the Bears backs with his timely shots and his ball-hawking game. At A. XT. Col- lege the Eagles hit the bottom again as they drop]ied a hard-fought battle to the Aggies (61-68). The Eagles returned home for a one-game stand and clipped the Winston-Salem five eonvincingly (66-50). to ;n ' enge an earlier defeat, before taking again to the ro.id for their last swing in northern division to take on .M.iryland State and Hampton. The boom came down on the Eagles hard as they went down to the Hawks (51-71) and to Pirates (64-70). Brown ' s squad returned home for its last home st.and .■iiid its last chance to cinch a conference tinirnament berth. In a warm-up fray against non-conferenee foe. .South Carolina .State, the Eagles won a hard-fought overtime tussle, 69-66. Then came the four-game streak th.it .■inelied third spot and a tourney berth with victories o er .Morgan .State and finally a vindication victory over the Shaw Bears 76-55, for an earlier setback. In the semi-finals NCC went down to the Jack Defare led Winston-Salem Rams and a resounding 79-69 defeat; but Brown ' s yearling club rebounded and pinned back the A. T. Aggies 89-58, in the ciinsolatidii game to co)) the third place trophy award. From last year ' s team — Captains Charley Score- board Badger and Claybon Spider Fields, and John Junebug Keels were the only returning cagers of promise. Badger, a junior, and Keels, a sophomore, were the only two regulars of this trio, while Fields, who played sparingly as a sub. was the only senior on the club. A starting unit of Keels, Badger, and Sligh along with two heralded frosli cagers opened and closed the Eagles 55-56 season. Carlton Ding-Dong Bell, 6 ' () Texan from Houston, was inserted in the starting line-up and proved to be a valuable addition as he topped the team in rebounds with a 245 and in scoring with .317 jjoints for a 1. ' J.2 average. The fifth man of this unit was the determined local product, J. Gilbert Riley. The 6 ' 4 , stern-faced lad was a tremendous rebounder and fine outside shot. His added reboiniding gave the Eagles 1-2-3 rebound off the boards. The most applamled of all the Eagles was James Chip Sligh, 5 ' 10 guard from Winston-Salem. His 291 points for a 12-1 average and the team ' s second leading scorer do not tell the story of bis value. He was sensational in his drive to inspire the Eagles on to play winning ball. The most underated of this aggregation was Charley Badger, the (i ' 5 center from Peekskill, N. Y. Badger had trouble finding himself during the early stages of the season, but thanks to Coach Brown, who stuck with him, the once prolific Badger found the range and the Eagles began to roll. Others instrumental in N ' CC ' s ujjhill battle to sew-up a tourney berth were Donald Pete Burke, a frosh from the Pittsburgh Hills, who had a coo l bead under fire and an uncanny knack of recovering loose balls and intercepting passes; Charley MeCullough, an armed service vet who proved to be valuable fill-in; Calvin Sweetcake Alexander, the second-half of the Te.xas duo, a real Smoothie on hardwood; Fields, with his swinging hook shot and unstoppable Kangeroo shot; niuiaii Parreott. the hustling Asbury Park, N. J., lad who liel|ied the Eagles tremendously in the tight spots; and Joseph Alston, Durham product, who was used sparingly in the NCC line-up during the season. Brown and his cagers with a year of play and experi- ence behind them have great plans for next year, with the iiossibility of playing in a iirii])Osed NCAA small- college tournament. •55- ' 56 RECORD OF COURT EAGLES 66 Virginia State 63 Shaw University •56 Tennessee State 58 Tennessee State 61 Virginia State 54 Hampton Institute 60 Virginia Union 61 Winston-Salem 71 Maryland State 72 Howard University 75 Morgan Stale 61 A.
