P roiii a widely experienced and competent faculty come the final touches on the men and women of tomorrow. With masterful strokes and perse- verance another citizen is born, bred and sent forth to spread his or her light to the world. But like the works of a great artist, the far-reaching results and the value of the teacher ' s work remains to be assayed by the future. We, here at North Carolina College are indeed proud of our faculty and staff, who rank with the best. It is our ultimate wish that we can make the final step into the world and Ijecome an integral part of its mechanism with the understanding and knowledge as set forth by our instructors. Excerpts Fr Thoiij lits Sui « ested by a ()ollei e Examination Fiimi Hours oj Idleness High in the midst, surrounded hy his peers Magnus his ample front sulilinie uprears: Placed on his chair of tate. lie seems a god. While Sophs and Freshmen licmlile at his nod. As all around sit wrapt in speechless gloom, His voice in thunder shakes the sounding dome; Denouncing dire reproach to luckless fools, Unskiird to plod in mathematic rules. Happy the youth in Euclid ' s axioms tried. Though little versed in any art beside; Who scarcely skilTd an F nglisli line to pen. Scans Artie metres with a critir ' s ken. What thought he knows not how his fathers hied. When civil discord piled the fields with dead, When Edward hade his concpiering hands advance. Or Henry tramplet! on the crest of France; Though marvelling at the name of Magna Cliarta Yet well he recollects the laws of Sparta; Can tell what edicts sage Lyciirgus made. While Blackstone ' s on the siielf neglected laid; Of Grecian dramas vaunts the deathless fame. Of Avon ' s hard rememliering scarce the name. C. C. They have come down the long road which is the path of anyone who will exert his all to obtain the knowledge which is set forth in an institution of higher learning. These students during the last four years have been a part of North Carolina College and when they graduate, there will always be an empty spot in the hearts of all who remain behind. In the life of each senior, the few years spent at N. C. C. will always be remembered. Some of these memories will inevitably be !)ad but there will be others of the many happy days spent in classes, in the dormitories, in the canteen or in hundreds of other places in which the students of North Carolina College find themselves. To help you to remember these facts from your college career, we present in the next few pages your classmates with a few facts about each. These persons have become an integral and working part of the college communit) by helping with communitv affairs, originating and pre- senting affairs, both social and otherwise, and in general helping to make the campus of North Carolina College a better and more enjoyable place in which to live. By working together in the Pan-Hellenic Council, all the organizations come together to discuss projects for the benefit of the whole student bodv. The Council, which is affiliated with the National Organization is one of the most active organizations on the campus toward im- proving the spirit of the student body. Through its regular meetings, problems confronting the Greeks of the college are brought before the group and settled in a democratic wa with the aid of past experiences and the co-operation of the member organizations. In the following pages you will see the faces of the Greeks who will in the next few years come to the fore- front again by making us, the members of the North Carolina College community, proud of them as they be- come known in the world of tomorrow. All American TlKprritmi mi diif of his l pical jaunts. The Homeconiirif; n{ the Kafjlcs. Pirates rimiiiiig game went to iiaiij;ht. its passing attack was lioljbled up as the Eagle line spear- headed by Captain Joe Person, I.en Shadding, ' Foots Crawford, Matthew Boone and Jim Poole had a field day throwing monkey wrenches into the heretofore well-oiled I ' iiale maihine. While they were standouts on defense, they had time on offense to open large holes for swift hacks like Jerome Evans, Amos Thornton, and Harvey Thompson. Those hacks helped account for the amassing of 25 points for the Eagles, while the visiting Pirates were racking up goose-eggs. Specii- hitidii went out that the Eagles would lie the CIAA champs for 19.53. However, this was short-lived as the Virginia State Trojans invaded O ' Kelly Field and played havoc with the Eagle ' s perfect record. The Eagle line displayed power, the liack- (icld dis|)layed glitter without an ap|)iecialilc punch, and this conihination led in all depart- ments except points. The scoreboard gave that de- partment to the Trojans, f 5-7. Consensus was that il was just one of those things. But if Lady Luck in- tervened in the Virginia State affair, she nuist have called on her ancestors for assistance in the Mary- lajid .State game, for in this game the Eagles rolled ii|i an amazing 1 7 first downs as against 3 for the Hawks. Again we led in all departments except points ari l we lost by 20-0. Sporting a 2-2 record il was time to sharpen claws for their homecoming game against the always tough Tennessee Slate Tigers. They were tough enough this time to hand the Eagles their third setback in a row. They did it to the tune of 19-0. After such a swell be- ginning our luck had to change and our next en- coiniter was with the Johnson (]. Smith Golden Bulls riding the crest of an midefeated season. Before the final whistle, they found that they were the victims of the greatest display of power the Eagles bad nuistered all year, as we racked up 47 |)oinls agaiiisl 7 loi- the once proud Bulls. Back in the Victoiy coliimu and again sporting a .500 record all eyes turned to Washington and the Eagle ' s favorite battleground (Griffith Sta- dium). Their opponent was to he the powerful West Virginia State Yellow Jackets (who inci- dentally were the favorites). Making their fifth trip in the eight-year history of the Capitol Classic. they began by jumping on the Jackets early and held a f3-0 lead at the half. There was little doubt as to who would emerge victors. That hereto- 91 fore mentioned line I called the greatest in colored collegiate circles, by tiie Courier ' s Bill Nnnn ) kept the Jackets running game in check all niglit. How- ever, in the second hall the Jacket ' s aerial attack began to cliik. and at one point thev had tied tiie Eagles 13-13. That looked as if il might have a tie ball game with less than two minutes remaining but Coach Kidtliik remembered 1948, when he had a conference crown in his grip. At that time he was leading this same Yellow Jacket team 2-0 with less than two minutes remaining. One ot his pass defenders relaxed and a Yellow Jacket got in behind hini to snare a touchdown pass. After the extra point was made. Riddick was sent home to wait another year. That was a senior team, so our coach waited year after year initil suddenly he found himsell in almost the same situation, against the same club. But this time he held the trump card — the ball and the lad who was to be voted the ( onlerence s Most Valuable Bla er. Amos riiorntcin. -piiuted over the goal line lioni 42 yariU out and thai. Sir, was vour ballgame. The Eagles had won l. ' M ' . and the conference crown was mathemaliialK theirs. Only A T ol Greens- boro remained, but what a remainiler. To beat A T at home is a tall order, as it is to lieat A T anvwhere. Couple that with tlie fact that since the origin of the Turkey Day Classic against them the Eagles have won onl once while losing live and tving one, and mmi come up with quite an order bu tlie 19.53 Eaglo. But the Eagles took that oiili-i in vliide as thc vsliipped the Aggies 1.5-7 to become tbi ' uu(li piilcd CIAA Champions of 1953. Il wa?- a great da lor the teamV lour-year men. Looking in the rocjin you could ee Captain Joe I ' erson who before his stint in Korea with the Air P ' orce was voted the Teaiirs liest Blocker. That was in his Freshman Year, later he went on to star with his Filth Air Force Mates in Japan, before returning to NCC in 1952. Also lacing his shoes for the last time was big Bill Hollingsworth an All-CIAA end in 1950. As part of his job on this final day, Bill went out to kick a 14-yard field goal. Looking further, one could see Harvey (Hoghead) Thomp- son the big fullliack who had been plagued with injuries since his return from Germany where he was voted an outstanding player at the fullback slot. There was James Poole, truly the unsung hero of the forward wall, who like his running mate. Captain Person, is the holder of the Best Blocker Award, he having won it in 1952. Also Linwood Johnson, a flashy fullback from Elizabeth City who was one of the most outstanding players on the field was seen slip])i ng into his pads before the game and was again to be seen mobbed by admireis after his brilliant performance in his final eflort. Head Coach of the CIAA ' S 1954 Visi- tation Champions, the North Carolina College Eagles has been acknowledged by the sports world as a new star in the basketball firnianienl. Browns Eagles finished the regular conference season with a 17-3 record and turned in an over-ail record of 22 wins and five setbacks. For Brown, who took over NCC ' s basketball destiny in 1952 after the resignation of John B. I Mr. Basketball) McLendon. Jr.. the championship in his second year was the result of hard work and masterful strategy. Brown today is McLendon ' s outstanding pupil. Harrison, an original |)erformer for McLendon. is rounding out his senior ear at NCC no . The 19.S4 NCC championship team is a club that has persevered over many odds. At the season ' s start, the Eagles were in need of a suitable replacement for Fred MrClaren. standout guard of 19.52. In James Sligh. 18- M-ar-old .5- ' ) frosh star from Winston-Salem. Brown found his maTi. Sligh. who weighs only 145 lbs. and is almost invariably shorter than his opponent, nevertheless is a clever court artist who combines the skill of ball handler, rebound-controller, and accurate marksman. After replacing McClaren with Sligh. Brown next was confronted with the problem of finding a dependable player to go into forward when Charley McCullough was drafted. Harvev Heartlev Clavton. junior, a speedy and accurate hoopster. answered that problem. Better than average offensively with several key plac- ers capable of tallying in the two column mark, Brown, with a limited number of reserves, soon found his de- fensive strategy hampered by the loss of Charley Barrick. who injured a knee against West Virginia. To sohe the problem of replacing Barrick was reallv a major matter, for the cool. 6-1 junior from Rosemont. Pa., was highly regarded as the Eagles steadying in- fluence. However, in Charley Badger, a 19-year-old. 6-4 freshman from Peekskill. N. ' I.. Brown utilized a big man who has rapidly developed into a powerful opponent on the short run. The problem of adequate reserves con- tinued to plague the Eagles. Early in 19.54. Benny Uix. formerlv a first line reserve under the McLendon dynasty returned to NCC. and used sparingly at first before moving into a starting berth in the Eagles last games. I)ix contributed notably to the progress of the Eagles. The true measure of Brown ' s strategy and ingeimity was prcned when the Eagles wdii undisputed claim to the CIAA flag by turning back liiion 62 to .5!!. In that starting lineup onlv Harrison of the season ' s regulars took the court. The starting quint that sealed the flag for NCC was composed of Harvey Heartley and Charley Floyd, for- wards; George Greene and Benny Dix. guards: and Harrison, center. Added to Brown s problems in the last regular season tilt was the loss of Samuel Sad Sam Jones, the squad s top offensive star, who was injured. 96 Court of Beauty kkj s Ki Hr. i: ' h 97 Photography By Slanback Slitdk yUl Jbelpn ne UJebber rii,jl,.gu, ,ln ;, .s . n .u.
