FROM THE ARCHIVES OF THE CLASS OF 1948 In September, 1944 the class of 1948 came to North CaroUna College for Negroes. Junior representatives assisted by Mr. Charles Holmes helped us elect class officers, and we soon had a very substantial treasury. Class officers were: Harold T. Epps, president; Allayne C. Turner, vice president; lvian Austin, secretary; Pauline Marsh, treasury. Under the leadership of our president and by the cooperation of the class members the freshman class gave a banquet for the fresh- man fellows leaving to join the armed forces. September, 1946 found us running as sophomores. This year the Campus began to look like a co-ed campus as the fellows returning from the services were gladly welcomed by all. The class dance ended the sophomore year and we left college to spend a restful summer vacation. Later lovely Miss Grace Coley was chosen Miss Homecoming to reign over all home- coming activities. It was October 6, around 6:45 p. m. that we heard the tolling of the bell and we were informed that Dr. Shepard had passed. Mere words cannot express our feelings, for we all realized we had lost a great friend, leader and educator. A memorial ceremony was held for the student body October 9 in B. N. Duke Auditorium initiated by the Student Council, John Turner, president. The question, who would be the next presi- dent was a much-discussed one while we saw an efficient Interim Committee named to serve until the new president would be announced. On January 20, 1948, The Board of Trustees announced that Dr. Alfonso Elder would be our new president. History was being made and right here on North Carolina College-s campus too. Our class president and another law student filed applications for admission to the Universit ' of North Carolina law school where there are no Negro students. The time has come when we must say fare- well to our instructors and friends and to North Carolina College. We must leave the sloping hills, the verdant green and give up our places at this institution of higher learning to other joung men and women desiring to further their education. Meanwhile, we will follow our motto and go ad adpera per aspera — To The Stars Through Difficulties. 18
