Full of spirit and pej) we were now ready to hetjin our work. The first social affair niven In Hie freshman class for the student hody was a dance -to the sweet tunes ,.f Bdly StaHord ' s ,ua ' liestra. Souvenirs and ])unch and cookies i-emiiid us (d ' the revelry. Customarily Mrs. Harris had been the spimsor of all freshmen classes. The Class of ' ■iO, so inspired by her teachings, literally drafted her to • ' midhci lis in our sophomore year. She did! We again elected George Norman, President; Milton Johnson, ' ice I ' risident ; Robert L. Durcn, Secretary; Thclnia L. Battle, Chairman of the Social Ccmimittee; and Josejih A. Christmas, Trea.surcr. Again, wanting to give something for tlie students, we gaye a Valen- tine dance. Due to the growth of tlie student body we used the gym for this entertainment. Souvenirs were given to our guests along with sjiecial features. ' I ' he so])homores felt (|uite proud to be called u|ion to act as guides whin our nine new buildings were dedicated. At the end of our second year Charles Cobb was elected President for the juidor year; Thelma ! . Battle, Vice President; Josephine Pittman, Secretary ; and Ste|)hen Thomas, Treas- urer. Naomi IMcIjean and Geneva Harper were the representatives for tlie Student Council. Plans f(u- the junior year ' s work were discusseil. Our young men formed themselve-, into a comittee to meet all trains .aiid buses bearing stu- dents in September, to give the freshmen any licl])ful information or assistance. The young women ])ledge(l to do their best to make the newcomers feel at home. We also planned for a party to be given for all freshmen and new students. It was the first of its kind by upper- classmen. Our biggest affair for this year was the Junior-Senior I ' roiii which to iis was re.illy some- thing great. Setting a precedent, we were permitted to invite young men of the alumni to attend our Prom. The Music Assembly, beautifully decorated with suiilax and flowers, gave the im|)ression of a gai ' den where lovers meet. The music was in keeping with the beauty — that of Jimmy Gunn of Charlotte, Noi-th Carolina. ' I ' he i|ueen was none other than Robert I.. Durcn of Camden, South Carolina, with her attendants Othelia Watson and ' I ' lielma L. Battle. Our beloved spon.sor, Mrs. J. V. Harris, was ))resented with a basket nf flowers. The Class of ' iO delights in doing things to make others luqipy, ' I ' hc minstrel show that was given by the juniors brought out many hearty laughs. The chiss officers elected for the senior year were Charles Cobb, President; James Brown, ' ice President; Josephine Pittman, Secretary; Stephen Thomas, Treasurer; and Tlichna Battle, Chairman of the Social Committee. The first dramatic aff ' air of the year. The Whole Town ' s Talking, was given by the senior class. By the large crowd that fumed out, we are sure th.it we could get many Aniens of the fact that the jihiy was a siieeess. The Commencement exercises will signify not only the conclusion of one chapter cd ' our class history, but also the beginning of the serious work of our byes, when the (iradiiating Class of ' 40 of the North Carolina College for Negroes will write its real history, that id ' achievemcnt.s and successes of its members.
