Future In The Baptist State Convention has always had leadership with vision. One of these visions was for a state denominational hospital. Some of the leaders could see a large Medical Center in the future. The purpose of a denominational hospital is first, to give medical care to Baptists of North Carolina who are unable to pay for such services. To those who are sich and need care the Baptist is the 'House 4 of Healing' This institution is more than a x . building of red brick and mortar. Beneath its Nu 5 ' sturdy exterior beats the heart of humanity. ef: g i W .1 5 Secondly, the purpose ofa denominational hos- 2, 'X pital is to conduct a School of Nursing where j r Nlycv- ,iiigx young women who desire to become registered 'E ,N nurses may come and receive the necessary if ' gngv 3, education and experience. Baptist Hospital began its work as a missionary en- terprise when it opened its 80-bed facility to patients. The first class of nursing students also enrolled. Throughout these past fifty years, many advances forward have been made, not only in number of patients served but with new buildings and the most modern medical achieve- ments. These accomplishments were made through struggle with disease and for mankind. In 1941, Bowman Gray School of Medicine joined the hospital on Hawthorne Hill, and the hospital then enlarged its facilities to 300 beds by 1942. In 1946, an outpatient department, designed to serve 50,000 patient visits per year, was opened. tlt now serves nearly twice that number of patient visits per yearj. One hundred-and-fifty beds were added in response to an increasing need for health care facilities. Teaching, preaching and healing continue to be the objectives of the hospital. Davis Chapel was built in 1957 to aid the chaplains in their ministry. One of the nation's first Progressive Care Centers was opened in 1959 with 80 beds. Many changes with the times have taken place. Modern technical services are aiding the physicians in diagnosis, treatment and research. Medical students, allied health stu- dents and nursing students receive an education through classroom study and clinical ex- perience. Total patient care is received from these students, each with a unique concern for the pa tient's health. 132
