With his keen sensitivity of the needs for the Union and providing co-curricular activities for participants, he joins both together with his practical philosophy in delivering services that are much appreciated by students. Because of his unique management style, many organizations, departmental clubs, service clubs, churches, schools, and numerous other agencies benefit greatly because of his concern to make everything enjoyable when using the facility. V Once in a while, thinking over these things, we have the feeling that there must be a definite reason behind our existence. PRIDE alone is sufficient reason why we love Dear A T. One of the most important occasions of this year at A T, and certainly a greatly significant educa- tional event has been, S-T-U-D-Y-I-N-G! • C ii r si _ -  In addition to good study habits and attending classes, RELAXATION must come into PLAY. Smiling for snapshots with Mr. J. takes one ' s mind off of many subject matters. It was discovered that distinctive features of col- lege life enabled many students to learn about others. But for all their individuality, students also have much in common. They share a com- mon human nature, certain emotional drives, in- tellectual capacities and moral tendencies. We must respect her and admire her for wanting to take a leadership role in — increasing his weight during time-out from classes. 59 Y • ' ' ' - ' • Academic Pursuits Education must help us cultivate leisure time and interests. We thank you Dear A T for providing all students an opportunity for exploration according to their needs. ! Tremendous potential for educational advan- tages. We thank you DEAR A T for allowing us to capitalize on each opportunity. It is that time of the year when students get a chance to give the ole Fraternity grin AL- WAYS STRIVING FOR THE BEST! I would like to express a special and sincere thanks to you the AGGIE FAMILY for the support and understanding that you have given my administration. This year has been a special one from the beginning with the arrival of the CEN- TENNIAL CLASS of 1991. A T has produced the best of the best in less than 100 years of its existence. The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., and the late Dr. Ronald McNair are just a few examples of the products produced by this great University. And, as our Chancellor says, AGGIELAND IS THE PLACE WHERE DREAMERS BECOME ACHIEVERS, FROM AS- TRONAUTS TO PRESIDENTS. Fellow Aggies, I would like to say that in addition to pursuing academic excellence, get involved in the works of STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION. ONLY YOU, THE STUDENTS WILL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE PROGRESS. The programs sponsored by the SGA are for you, and it is your presence that makes them a success. And with vour student support, we continue to be in the forefront of the HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES. It is with this thought in mind, that you, remember your responsibility as an Aggie to keep the spirit and that good ole — AGGIE PRIDE ALIVE. It is important that we contin- ue to strive for excellence, the excellence needed for the continued growth and success of this great University. Be- cause we, the Student Government Association, are STRIV- ING TODAY FOR WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOMOR- ROW. The Executive Board Karen Yvette Mickens, President Clemente McWilliams. Being a part of this group, serves as an aid to the choice of a short-term or long-term career. A Treasure of Excellence was our aim . . . Living The Dream: Let Freedom Ring! The Constitutional Status Of Afro-Americans Into The 21st Century . . . February 1988 Greetings: The history of this great nation can not be considered without recalling the significant contributions of Black Americans, even from the nation ' s very beginning. Ours has been a glorious past, replete with all of the ruffles and flourishes as associated with heroes, martyrs, leaders, and builders. The contributions of Black Americans did not come easy but were hammered out on the anvils of sweat, blood, and undying love. While we languished at times in the mean crucible of racism, we nevertheless were determined to make our way toward freedom and justice. As a part of this history the men and women who have become internationally known have been led by persons such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Justice Thurgood Marshall, Whitney Young, Jesse Jackson, Dr. Ronald McNair, Crispus Attucks, Harriet Tubman, Mary McCleod Bethune, ' and thousands of others who, because of their presence on this soil, have led the way as pertains to access for all. We must, therefore, continue to remember and to celebrate the magnificent impact of Black Americans on the nation. We must remind this civilization that the freedom of all is affected by the lack of freedom for any. I am confident that Black Americans, because of their unique and trying history, will continue to play a major role in helping America become all she was intended to be. I commend the Black History Committee for coordination of this year ' s observance. May we all be enriched by each event. Sincerely, X Edward B. The eldest of three sons of a college professor father and a school teacher mother, Haley finished high school at 15. He completed two years of college before enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1939, beginning his service as a messboy. On his various tours of duty at sea during World War II, Haley worked late into the nights trying to write short stories. For eight years, editors rejected hundreds of his manuscripts, but at last some of his writings began to sell. In 1 952, the Coast Guard created a new rating for Haley - Chief Journalist. While assisting the handling of U.S. Coast Guard public relations, he continued to hone his writing skills. Haley retired after 20 years of military service in 1959. He ventured into a new career as a freelance writer, publishing numerous magazine articles. His subjects were frequently the headline-making personalities of the day, such as the highly controversial Malcolm X. With Malcolm X, Haley wrote his first book, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, which was published in 1965. It , was selected as one of ' The Ten Best American Books of the 1960 ' s Decade, and it became required reading in many U.S. high schools and colleges. 186 ••--™- — I Aggie ot Coach Mo Forte Pride I ! 190 1987 NORTH CAROLINA A T FOOTBALL SCHEDULE SEPTEMBER 12 Winston-Salem State A 7:00 19 South Carolina State A 7:00 26 Morgan State H 1:30 OCTOBER 3 Norfolk State H 1:30 10 Johnson C. When Alex Haley was searching for his roots, he came across an interesting discovery. His father, Simon Haley, was once a student here on this campus in the area of agriculture. He documented this in his long saga over national tele- vision and the University chose to pro- vide a landmark in recognition of this discovery and as a tribute to Mr. Ha- ley ' s artistic ability. James White Administrator -James Toon Administrator 241 Ik ' 1 llxljl y Martin Franklin Holt, son of the late Charles and Eliza Ann Isley Holt, was born in Graham, North Carolina on May 3, 1890. Mr. Holt received his early education at the High Point Normal and Industrial Institute, High Point, North Carolina. Upon finishing this institution he entered Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia and graduated in 1914. In 1918, he came to A T College. For years operated the blacksmith shop and taught on the campus. While operating the blacksmith shop, Mr. Holt fabricated much of the metal used in some of the earlier building. Later, he was appointed Superintendent of Building and Grounds, directing the layout of some of the landscaping which still exists intact. Through his life of service to Guilford County and the state of North Carolina, most memorable to A T graduate today, was that span of service (1930-1960) as Superintendent of the farms. He was appointed Superintendent of the college farms in 1930, a position he held until his retirement in June, 1960. While at A T he made outstanding contributions and remained a close friend of the University even after his retirement. He was a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church, and was an honorary member of the American Society of Agronomy and the Hampton Alumni Association. Mr. Holt, a man of duty, perserverance and love for his fellowman, the young as well as the old, and certainly as a father, whose leadership and courage will be a symbol of greatness to his family. There are many people who do find love but allow it to slip through their hands because they are unwilling or unable to nurture love. Love requires sacrifice. Love requires the willingness and patience to listen and act on someone else ' s point of view or desires and needs. Love requires thought. Many lovers often act before they think and that can be dangerous and reckless. Unfortunately, we live in an age when many people have given up on love and have turned to the pursuit of pleasure in cars, clothes, drugs and liquor. These people are simply fooling themselves. The gift of love requires a search for love. The search may sometimes be very long and difficult. But those who have been fortunate enough to find love will tell you that the search is one worth going through. Love is very serious and very profound. Often, lovers fall out of love because one of them or both of are unable to understand the depth of the relationship that they are involved in. There are many people who play with love or who are unable to sustain the pain that does come when two people attempt to love each other well. Yes, love does bring pain. And those who are mature in their loving are able to cope with it and work through the pain. Those who are immature simply — for the most part — are unable to cope, fold their tents and run off into the night — hoping that another love will come their way. More often than not, those who do flee, find themselves loving again. But their experiences are the same. For they have failed to comprehend that one of the major components of love is hard work. So, if you have found love, hold on to it. Nuture it and fight for it. Sometimes the pain will seem great. But refuse to give up. For at the core of greatness is the ability to love and the willingness to pay that price that comes along with being loved. WRITTEN BY: ROBERT ANDREWS, JR.
