THE SPRING FLING Turning out for the spring fling was very unique for us. The Aggies, really enjoyed themselves. There was a disco, food and plenty of entertainment. It really was a chill from the books, And you know that. — Harrv D. Jacobs ' The New Stadium Anticipation for the 1981 Football Season was heightened with the completion of the new Aggie Stadium. After years of playing at Memorial Stadium, a sense of achievement is feh among all Aggies now that we have our own stadium. It is improvements like this, that make North Carolina A T a highly acclaimed university. — Michael D. And hate myself for things I have done. I don ' t want to keep on a closet shelf A lot of secrets about myself. And fool myself, as I come and go. Into thinking that nobody else will know The kind of man I really am; I don ' t want to dress up myself in sham. I want to go out with my head erect, I want to deserve all men ' s respect; But here in the struggle for fame and pelf I want to be able to like myself. I don ' t want to look at myself and know That I ' m bluster and bluff and empty show. I can never hide myself from me; I see what others may never see; I know what others may never know, I never can fool myself and so. Whatever happens, I want to be Self-respecting and conscience free. Edgar A. Deborah Zeliars, John 102 .mmmm i ' am wM LINES There is no better way to describe A T other than the simple words hnes. Why hnes play an extremely vital role in each and every fellow Aggie ' s day to day campus experiences. Freshman year when I arrived on campus, I was anticipating and scared of the new life to which I had to adjust only to realize that first I must wait in a long line to gain entrance to my dormitory. When only a week later I was entered into the hectic race of obtaining course cards for registration and impatient as I am, I waited my turn in line once more. Freshman year came and left but those lines, unfortunately, did not. For sophomore year was almost a duplicate when it came to lines. Whether it was my most interesting Graphics class, a delightful and tasty meal in the cafeteria, going to watch the Aggies battle it out with the Rams or the joy and excitement of registering, getting that most valuable I.D. Card and even obtaining the long waited for A T Yearbook, I was repeatedly confronted by long haunting lines. Entering my junior year I now have discovered the secret to why A T incorporates its system of lines. It is very, very simple. Similar to going on line to pledge fraternities and sororities, we are pledging the Aggie family and the pride and unity that comes along with it as we all daily wait in those ever present lines. — Vicki Coleman AGGIELAND, WHERE KNOWLEDGE IS ETERNAL Oh yeah Frank, Now I understand how to do it, says Pam Carl Locus an Architectural Engineering senior says He studies hard every day the Arch. Founders of this first greek letter Black fraternity on a Black college campus were Edgar A. Love, Os- car J. Cooper, Frank Coleman, and Ernest E. Just. The fraternity was founded with the be- lief that Friendship is essential to the soul ; thus this became the fraternity motto. The cor- nerstones of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. are its four cardinal principles — Manhood, Schol- arship, Perserverance, and Uplift. Since its founding. Omega has grown from the Mother Chapter, Alpha, at Howard to some three hun- dred graduate and undergraduate chapters throughout the United States, and six interna- tional chapters which collectively claim nearly 60,000 Omega men. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., the first intercollegiate Greek letter fraternity estab- lished for black college students, was orga- nized at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York in 1906. The first unit of this national fraternity, organized by college men of Afro- American descent, was called Alpha Chap- ter. The fraternity was born out of desire for maintaining close association and unified support for members of this small minority group, inasmuch as they were denied, for the most part, the mutual helpfulness which the majority of students attending their univer- sity regularly enjoyed. The seven visionary founders at Cornell, Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Chapman, Eugene K. Jones, George Kelly, Nathaniel Murray, Robert Ogle and Vertner Tandy, labored in the yea r of severe economic struggle and racial conflict in the United States. Despite their difficulties of organization in this untried field of student life, the early fraternity pioneers succeeded in laying a firm foundation and remained steadfast in their goals pointing toward de- velopment of the fraternity ' s membership — that is the espousing of the principles of good character, sound scholarship. Christian fellowship and the uplifting of humanity, es- pecially the struggling black minority in the United States. With leadership, friendship, and service as its cardinal principals, the fraternity has used the Scout Oath and Laws as the driving force shaping its relationship with human- ity. Furthering the founding principles of the Fraternity, Kappa Psi Chapter was founded at A T in 1952. Giving service to the Uni- versity as well as to the Greensboro Commu- nity, Kappa Psi Chapter has had a history characterized by the development of friend- ship, the promotion of service to mankind and the realization of the meaning of free- dom upon which America was founded. Al- pha Phi Omega also encourages scholastic achievement. Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fra- ternity now has more than 190,000 members and over 600 chapters in a very short 56 year history. This outstanding pictorial and narrative review of an extraordinary year in the University ' s history will be a perpetual testimony to what we have been able to accomplish together during the past academic year. As you know, my first 150 days as the new leader of this great institution have been action-packed. The student body, the faculty, administrators, the trustees, and the alumni have rallied to my initial challenges to help propel A £ T State University to unparalleled heights. We all commend you, the Nation ' s foremost student body, for your continuing pursuit of excellence i n your act i vi t ies . Many of you will be graduating this year to assume leadership roles in the communities wherever you settle. To those of you who will return next year, I solicit your continued support as we face even greater challenges as associated with maintaining A £ T ' s status as one of the Nation ' s premier un i vers i t ies. You will constantly be asked by me to perpetuate that Grand Aggie Spirit which has prevailed in this State and throughout the Nation for almost 90 years. That spirit is one which overcomes adversity by hard work, determina- tion, and tenac i ty . It is hoped that over the summer months you gain a measure of relaxation and rest, and that you return in the fall equipped to keep on keeping on. Sincerely yours. Edward B. Reigning as Miss North Carolina AST is an honor and a privilege which I 7 shall cherish for the rest of my life. It is also something for which I owe to 3 ! you my heartfelt gratitude, for you have graciously shown me the path that leads j Jg Somewhere Over the Rainbow . Being a Queen is not an easy task. The position 6 carries with it demands and responsibilities which are almost not humanly possible i; ' to fulfill. .•jB To the SGA Executive Board : for the support you have consistently given, I i | thank you. For so many times, the absence of your support would have made my tJ realized dreams like puffs of smoke in the wind. You are truly knights and ladies ' O of the Land. To the Administrators and Staff : for the encouragement and coopera- i;l:- tion relentlessly given through all my projects, and for the willingness to lend ! an ear to my endless desires and dreams for Aggieland, I thank you. And Espe- v2 cially to the Student Body: for electing me to this prestigious position, for the ■.■::- love, respect and Royal Treatment given to me each and every day of my Reign as h Your Queen, I am forever indebted to you. Memories of the standing ovation at v Coronation, that Aggie Pride displayed at Black College Day, the rally around me jj?;::; during my tragedy, and even the simplest, Hello, Miss AGT in the caf will for- ' fi ever live in my heart and be my companions for life, I cannot put into words the tys joy I feel in my heart. ■ •• . I can waste it or use it for good, but what I do today is important - - because I am exchanging a day of my life for it. When tomorrow comes, this will be gone forever, leaving in its place something that I have traded for it. NORTH CAROLINA AGRICULTURAL AND TECHNICAL STATE UNIVERSITY GREENSBORO 27411 (919) 379-7820 STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION Dear Fellow Aggies: This year has truely been one to remember. As I pause to reflect upon it, I find that on the surface there appears to have been many disap- pointments and set-backs. However, when I look beneath the surface, I find that there was also a common thread of good running throughout this year. A thread that would not break. - --- A thread that would not weaken, despite complaints, attitudes or even neglect. A thread that we should have seen tightening if the complaints, attitudes and neglect increased. A thread that will remain with this Great Black University long after we gone. A thread that was with us through thick and thin. A thread that was with us from Homecoming ' 81 through April Pest ' 82. A thread that was with each and everyone of us each and everyday. A thread that we were suppose to take from the classroom and be able to make a practical application of. A thread that was suppose to tea ' -.h us, as African Americans, how to collectively work to overcome all external obstacles and barriers . A thread that should have taught us what being an Aggie was all about. A thread that should have taught us that Aggies are not apathetic or complacent, but leaders and achievers. A thread that should have in stilled AGGIE PRIDE and SPIRIT in us. That thread is the thread of education, and I sincerely hope that, at some point during the year, it wrapped itself around you. For as the philosopher Hericlitus reminds us you may never pass this way again . Yours in Love and Hope Stephen S.
