DIFFERENT BUT YET THE SAME The cliallcnges of our society take on many forms. Living in an era so blistered with changes and innovations, there must be some focal point of skiU and knowledge that will prepare one with the weapons of acceptance and rejec- tion necessary to conlront those challenges and yet survive. A T is that focal point. Different as it may seem, but yet the same. A T presents one with a demonstrative display of every facet of our complex society, but at the same time it renders the tools to endure. The degree of acceptance or the manner of rejection is based on one ' s ability to under- stand the problems that confront him. In order to meet any of these challenges, we must first meet the academic challenge which is now greater than it has been in any other span of history. With tremendous emphasis being placed upon one ' s formal training in detemiining the type of job and salar ' he may get, it is increasingly important that one take all of his academic endeavors seriously. We are now in an age of competition. Only those who academically qualify will survive. JJffltMBIMI Mli ■■■■m. RGANIZATIONS 111 tiiduy ' s society, man lives because he has some- thing to cling to, something that interests him, or something in which lie believes and trust. The large number of members in the University ' s many organi- zations clearly proves this to be true. By joining organizations, one learns to meet the challenge to foster understanding. Organizations help to refine and understand one ' s self better. One also learns to get along with other people and develop his leadership ability to its fullest. jii ' :j.i. ' - sd H As students, we are chal- lenged to test our skill, to test our competence, and to exe- cute our ability in athletics. Emerging as victors is not al- ways prevalent; whether we lose by score, we are still vic- tors in our hearts. When we honor the thrill of victory with intelligent minds and hearts, and when we are strong enougli to accept the agony of defeat, we will al- ways be victors. When the best effort is exemplified, we can all say it is a task well done. We have the potentials to perpetuate manly competi- tion, mentally and physically. mmm TUDENT i 1 , iW k u ■iv-x F 1 B .. LI. .1 AL CARTER Al Carter has been an invaluable cog in the success of the North Carohna A T bas- ketball program since joining the staff at the start of the 1974 seasoa Carter w s a standout guard for the Aggies prior to his graduation from the uni- versity in 1973. His chief responsibilities include scouting and working with the back- court players. Scouting IS a very important part of our program. Carter said. Statistics don ' t al- ways tell the story. Many times in my scout- ing reports 1 pick up things that a player or coach likes to do in certain situations. And then there is always that human element of how well a player responds to contact and pressure situations. A true student of the game. Carter spends countless hours reviewing and study- ing plays in the .Aggie system. Although he was a big scorer during his career at A T, Carter has always been known for his de- fense. Defense is the only way to offset teams with similar height, experience, ability, speed, and ball-handling, Carter said. In the close games the team that forces an error is the team most likely to win. Co-captains from left to right: Steve Cassell and L. J. Pipkins. 85 30-Edward Vickers, Forward, Headland. TYSON, PRESIDENT Fellow Aggies: We, as a group of proud black people, should continue to achieve highly in all areas of better educating ourselves. The chief purpose of a university is to encourage and facilitate learning in all its forms. To this end we have assembled here books, buildings and equipment, and scholarly minds that we believe will be conducive to growth among responsive and purposeful students. N.C. A T S.U. has graduated many successful blacks in all fields of human endeavors and mankind. We shall continue this quantitative and qualitative trend of being a polished product of N.C. A T S.U. The opportunities are there and you must make your dream a reality. There exists a need to express myself to others, to allow others to see my image and to accept or reject it just as 1 have . . . Who we are today is reaching toward who we will be tomorrow. What we appear to be today and the way we will appear to be tomorrow will change. Fellow Aggies, the struggles and challenges of tomorrow must be fulfilled. As you progress, always remember your fellowman and reach out, reacli up, and reach back. As leaders of tomorrow, let the Aggie Spirit reign supreme in all your endeavors. I have truly enjoyed working with you and thank everyone for making my term in otTice a pleasant one. I would like to share this thought with you from Aldous Hu.xley. Wynn, Dean of the School of Education 250 SCHOOL OF NURSING i ) Dean Naomi W. Wynn The School of Nursing offers a program leadmg to the Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. The tlrsl two years of study encompass most courses generally labeled general education. The last two years of study are largely devoted to the Nursing Major. The faculty in Nursing subscribe to the beliefs and assumptions related to the system of concepts that de- scribe, explain, and predict man ' s behavior. We believe that man is a unique human being with certain basic need that he is affected, intluenced, and changed by his heredi- ty, environment and experiences; that there are variations in intensity and resources which hamper him from time to time in meeting his basic needs. Nursing education is the systematic and deliberate preparation of an individual to tultll! the role, function, and responsibility of the professional nurse. It provides opportunity for personal growth which helps the learner in humanistic and protessional endeavors. In addition, nursing education provides learning experiences which aid the learner in utilizing the problem solving method to meet the present and future nursing needs of society. The program offered by the School of Nursing is accredited by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the National League for Nursmg. The School of Nursing is an agency member oi the National League for Nursmg in the NLN Council of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs. 251 Mr. William Streat, Chairman of the Department of Architectural En- gineering. DIFFERENT BUT YET THE SAME. ■Challenge ' ' ... To some of us it is merely a foreign word! Many of us do not experience the challenges that others must go through due to our own irresponsible actions. Too many times as our fellow student struggles fora worthy cause, that can be beneficial to all, we sit back, laugh, and ridicule that person and what he is trying to establish. A challenge as defined by Webster is to de- mand as of right . Do we as students define our- selves for what is right or do we let things go on unnoticed until it endangers us? Ask yourself this question and see what the response will be. Web- ster ' s Dictionary also defines challenge as to ques- tion the legality of legal qualifications. Are we as students, concerned with the legality of what embodies us ' Are we concerned with where oui money goes? Are we concerned with anything? Challenge is also said to be to call out to duel or combat Though this may sound violent, we can accomplish things by nonviolent tactics. We must ensure a foundation in which we can demand higher authority and our demands be met. As long as we show tliat we are not going to be pushed over, we will always get a sense of respect. It seems obvious that some students have never come in contact with any challenges. If we cannot accept a challenge, then we must stand in our own shoes and stop leaning on those who succeed for recognilioiL Remember it is all or none together we stand and divided we tail. Seems as if we are losing our balance!!! The challenge . . . different but yet the same. It sounds so true. No matter how hard one tries, one never accomplishes a thing. 290 MiiiiuiiiMffiaffl iiiiiia MiiyiiJES iiiiijiii iiBi Si: ' ;: 291 l-nJl ■■mlnJllllllMfcl ' I LliU 292 ■Blililli 293 r ' ' T::!rnrTrr:?:E :m S-U-P-E-R SUPER, SUPER THAT ' S WHAT THEY ARE. Its primary function is to serve well balanced meals for the students of our great university. With the beginning of the Fall semester 1976-1977, one of the major problems concerning the cafeteria was the long lines students had to stand in before being served poorly prepared meals. Students began to voice their opinions concerning the lines and tlie food. Many students felt that the cafeteria should have been boycotted in order to get better services. Intially the stu- dent government was called upon to assess the problems and try to eliminate tliem. The student government promptly initiated plans as a way of meeting the demands made by the students. Few of the demands made were met; one of which was the changing of meal hours. Most of the plans that were initiated became inactive or they are still in the mdimentary stages. Tliree times a day hundreds of hungry students still criticize the food services provided by F. A. Williams Cafe- teria. 296 297 SHORT AND SASSY i Moviiit I ' ll up I ' l S ' -uii H. 298 Hi -C.l!iii.[i; ' J:lll !.;L rliLr h ■' H ' ,ll,.i4. While many choose to sleep or watch tele- vision, active Aggies choose physical and mental chal- lenges. For these students there are many intramural teams that allow them to release their energy. Regardless of ability, they enjoy virtually any sport including foot- ball, tennis, and basketball. New to Aggieland is a wo- men ' s intramural basketball league. This new facet of recreation has proven to be very popular. The Memorial Student Union is the center of campus leisure life. Many students gather here to relax or meet with friends. Among the leisure activities available in the union are billiards, bowling, and table tennis. Those who prefer a more peaceful environ ment in which to meet the challenge of competition play cards, checkers, or chess in the quiet game room. 307 THE CHANGING WEATHER The changing weather in Aggieland offers an even greater challenge. We met the chaUenge of the hot, blazing sun and the cold wet rain with ease; but the challenge of tlie freezing, slippery snow presented the greatest challenge of aU weather conditions. The Aggies welcomed the snow with open palms. Snowballs Hew all over the campus hitting cars, windows, beautiful girls, and yes, even the campus security personnel. The challenge of the snow proved to be a real ball in Aggieland. Unfortunately, the A T security personnel has yet to meet the challenge of preventing snowball fights. There seems to be no real weapon to prevent them. U ntil a method is devised, the Aggies will go on making the best of a cold situation. Now it i,s our turn to be bad.
