Dubois ' s dviuimic hook Souls of Black Folk, This is our connotation ■ ' The Souls of Black Folk When we think of the soul of a person, we do not think of it in the same connection as the spirit of a person for two are entire- ly different and they should not be conjused. Spirit is used especially in contradis- tinction from matter; it may in many cases he substituted for soul, hut soul has commonly a fuller and more deter- minate meaning. Soul denotes energy and depth of feeling, as when we speak of soulful eyes-or better still- t he souls of Black fol k . The souls of Black folk denote a fervor and emotional force with which we live our lives and which set us apart from any other race of people. With such a fervor, we live here at A AT each year. We attend classes, have fun. and really gel some serious business done before an academic year is completed. We accomplish these tasks with such a dynamic force that our deeds are left long after we are gone. And then, is thai not what souls are and what they do? We all know that after the sold is gone, there is really nothing left. Therefore, the souls of Black people, especially .AGGIES, will live on here on .-i T ' s campus. HV oj the A} ' A. The entire campus enjoyed a most delightful and knowledge- able speech by him. He commented on Clifton Irving, hi- jacking, FBI. Cl.i. and young people. Brother Gregory has been fasting for the past 20 months as of Oct. 23 protesting the war in Vietnam. A 1969 graduate of A T in Business Education. Miss Bush is a Greensboro native now residing in . ew ) ork City. She is employed by the McGraw Hill Book Company where she carries out her professional duties as an editorial assistant. Full of Aggie energy, she also teaches and studies part-tinie at Hunter College in the City in pursuit of her master ' s degree. She contributes five hundred dollars yearly to the alumni scholarship fund and her company matches this amount. The Group met to participate in the filming of their dramatic story by .ABC Television. The Story was telecasted nationally by Harry Reasoner late February. 1973. Of the four, only David Richmond, counselor in a manpower program, now lives in Greens- boro. Willie Pollard, besides being an .Army ROTC in- structor is the .Aggies ' end coach. A graduate of Prarie View .A M . Pollard was drafted into professional bull but went into the ser- vice. Melvin Groomes came to A T in 1955 and has been one of the South ' s most successful baseball coaches. His teams won 10 CIA A titles in 17 sea- sons and finished second in the ME.AC in 1971. He is the football team ' s head scout and handles the defensive backs. H ' yiie Harris, a Charlotte native ser- ves as defensive line coach. Just return- ing to .A T after coaching at N.C. Central for a season. Harris was a cen- ter on .A T ' s 1959 CI. A. A champion- ship team. Murray . eely carries the responsibility of de- veloping the strong .Aggie offensive blocking line. In his 22nd year at .A T, Afc r also coaches the .A T trackmen. Stan Jacobs will he remembered for a long time as having been one of the all-time great quarterbacks to play for the .Aggies. .A native of Orangeburg. .S.C., Jake began his college ca- reer at S.C. State and entered the .Army after a year with the Bulldogs. Spruill Professor of Education and Dean, The Graduate School What can one say about the Aggie Spirit? In a sense, it is divergent, diffuse, joyous, but always seeking to reach the pinnacle of success that every human spirit craves. It would be foolish to assume that all of us are alike. We are so different and possess all of the qualities of the races of men. Some are good. Some are not so. good. Some are wise, while others are frivolous and foolish. Some are weak while others are strong, but we have some things in common. We feel we can hold our own with the best and we do not look down with a sense of arrogance on those who have not yet arrived. The spirit of Aggieland has endowed us with a sense of service and most Aggies will go out of their way to help those who are less fortunate or are in need. By the same token, the typical Aggie has his or her eyes on a star, a goal for which there is the passionate determination to achieve and he or she follows that star despite the difficulties until it is reached. The Ag e Spirit is diffuse and we might add con- busy trying to get to an Eastern University in engineer- ing. His SAT score was too low and after being rejected, he simply gave up, but a perceptive Aggie who had watched this young man ' s promise picked him up one day and said to him, Let ' s go to Greensboro. He brought him to A. and T. and demanded that the University admit him. Luckily, the University officials gave in to his plea. This young man, I am told, entered, passed the entrance examinations in English and mathematics and made the honor roll in his first semester and went on to finish the University summa cum laude in electrical engineer- ing. He is now touching other individuals, but I am convinced that had it not been for the influence of the Aggie Spirit, this young man may never have entered college. This story has been duplicated over and over again for it is typical of the A. and T. personality. The Aggie Spirit is joyous, whether it is in athletics or social or academic life. It is personified in the cheer- ful and cordial relationships between faculty and stu- dents, students and students, and students and alumni. The typical Aggie is not a brooder. Whether it be in the rural hinterlands or the urban sprawl, the passion to make life more liveable is disseminated to clientele through our men and women. It is sometime like a chain reaction where one Aggie touches an individual who touches another and another. In so many conversations this writer has shared with students there is often the statement, If it had not been for the help of ,1 would not have made it. The individual turns out often to be an Aggie. I have told this story so many times, but it is a true one and illustrates the Aggie Spirit in no uncertain terms. Sometime ago when we were giving the A. and T. Scholarship Examinations sponsored by the National Alumni Association for the selection of five outstanding students to receive scholarships to enter the University, this writer was scheduled to give an examination in a certain section of Eastern North Carolina. On many occasions, we had to drum up support and interest in th se exams. I remember talking to a principal and raised the question with him as to whether any of his students would be taking the tests. He smiled at me and said, No. I don ' t have a jtudent who can do any- thing on that exam. I admonished him to try them, that he might be surprised at the outcome, but my sug- gestion fell on deaf ears. We gave that examinaiton and a young man from this principal ' s school did not take it. In fact, he was culties, an Aggie man or woman learns to look at the brighter side of life and, thus, is an optimist. Finally, the Aggie Spirit arouses within an individ- ual the desire to reach the pinnacle of success that every human spirit craves. In academic life, in social and political affairs or in athletics, this passion is always there It makes the teacher excel so that students are led to quicken the qualities that are half-asleep within them. It makes the secretary proof her copies so that they turn out to be an exact reproduction of what is to be said. It makes the auto repairman recheck the body of .T fender that he has just put the finishing touches on. It makes the athlete scamper across the football field demanding a little more than he feels he has or the basketball player to tackle the challenge of those who seem superior. It maKes the boxer who is running out of wind find more from somewhere to end the battle on top. It is this Aggie Spirit that produces entries into the Hall of Fame. Those who walk into these portals are embued with it and have shown through their specialties that they are worthy candidates to wear th mantle of the Blue and Gold. Yet, entry into the HaJl does not write finish for no Aggie sits idly by and rests on his or her laurels. As the Prophet Kalil Gabran would say, They give that they might have life for to withhold is to perish.
