College with a vim and enthusi- asm far superior to that found in i)revious freshmen. The fact that they were correctly orientated could be attested by the many shaven heads and beribboned girls. The class was organized under the efficient leadership of Theodore Armstrong, President, Carl Johnson, Vice President, and Ijoretta Bagwell, Secretary. These seekers of knowledge immediately began battle to lift themselves to a higher plane than that of mere freshmen. The debating team composed of iMolten Zachary, James Pendergrast and Jeremiah King defeated a well tutored sophomore team. The football season saw John Ghee, Ja mes Riddick, Allen Lynch, Charles Pope and Jesse Banner make coveted positions on the first eleven. The Ijasketball season served as a means of adding more laurels to the ' 39ers through the brilliant playing of John Ghee, James Riddick, James Mitchell and Allen Lynch. The girls were no less successful in their bid for athletic supremacy. Virginia Mc- Laurin, Willa Hamme, Bertha Savage and Pocahontas Stevens were out- standing on the basketball team. Members of the Class of ' 39 t|uickly found the range of the Honor Roll and scored many direct hits. Fraternities, sororities, clubs and other or- ganizations seeing that this was indeed an outstanding class, opened their doors to them and were greatly benefited thereb.v. The vim found in the ' 39ers as freshmen was not lacking when strong the.v returned as sophomores. Having impressed the freshmen with their superiority, the class was organized as follows: James Pender- grast, President, John Mollette, Vice President and Willa M. Johnson, Sec- retary. For the first time since 1928-29 the Sophomore debating team de- feated the freshmen. Persons responsible for this brilliant victory were Molten Zachary, James Pendergrast and Pearl Garrett. When the smoke from the celebration of the victory had faded away, the dazed students of A. and T. were again made sophomore conscious when four ' 39ers, Loretta Bagwell, Julia Snead, James Pendergrast and Charles Higgins, were elected to the Register Staff. Having the experience of one year of college athletic competition to their credit. John Ghee, Allen Lynch and Charles Pope were more out- standing as sophomore members of the football squad than as freshmen. The entire school paid homage to James Riddick. James Jlitchell, Allen Lynch and Samuel Hodges for the spectacular playing during the basket- ball season. Undoubtedly, without the aid of these four men, A. and T. would not have won the C. L A. A. Championship in basketball. Leon Davenport, a ' 39er, was trainer for the championship team. Another September found the class of ' 39, no longer green freshmen or wise sophomores but smug juniors. The class officers for this year were James Pendergrast, President, Carl Johnson, Vice President, Marsh- all Campbell, Treasurer, Willa M. Johnson, Secretary and Montee Wynn. Reporter. This was a busy year for the ' 39ers. As Juniors they became more serious and conscious in their school work. During this year the idea of publishing an annual was submitted to the class by our president. This project was enthusiastically accepted by the class and a staff of the fol- lowing persons was elected: Mercer Ray, Editor, J. King, Business Man- ager and V. Macomson, Assistant Business Manager. Page twenty-nine
