A monument indeed ! Around thy Ijase with grateful hearts Behold thy students kneel. We bless the pow ' r that gave thee birth To help Us in our need. We ' ll ever strive while here on earth All loyalty to yield. Chorus With joy, with joy, dear A. and T. Thy students turn from thee, To spread thy trophies year by year From Dare to Cherokee. Dear A. and T., Dear A. and T. The signet thou shalt be. Set by our great commonwealth Proud boaster of the free. She ' d have the record of her worth On granite not inscribed. Nay! let the children of her birth Proclaim it by their lives. Dear A. and T., Dear A. and T. Henceforth our aim shall be. By precepts wise and deeds more sure To bless the State through thee. The arts of industry to wield Against an idle foe, A harvest rich from ripened fields Of what thy students sow. College with a vim and enthusi- asm far superior to that found in i)revious freshmen. The fact that they were correctly orientated could be attested by the many shaven heads and beribboned girls. The class was organized under the efficient leadership of Theodore Armstrong, President, Carl Johnson, Vice President, and Ijoretta Bagwell, Secretary. These _ seekers of knowledge immediately began battle to lift themselves to a higher plane than that of mere freshmen. The debating team composed of iMolten Zachary, James Pendergrast and Jeremiah King defeated a well tutored sophomore team. The football season saw John Ghee, Ja mes Riddick, Allen Lynch, Charles Pope and Jesse Banner make coveted positions on the first eleven. The Ijasketball season served as a means of adding more laurels to the ' 39ers through the brilliant playing of John Ghee, James Riddick, James Mitchell and Allen Lynch. The girls were no less successful in their bid for athletic supremacy. Virginia Mc- Laurin, Willa Hamme, Bertha Savage and Pocahontas Stevens were out- standing on the basketball team. Members of the Class of ' 39 t|uickly found the range of the Honor Roll and scored many direct hits. Fraternities, sororities, clubs and other or- ganizations seeing that this was indeed an outstanding class, opened their doors to them and were greatly benefited thereb.v. The vim found in the ' 39ers as freshmen was not lacking when strong the.v returned as sophomores. Having impressed the freshmen with their superiority, the class was organized as follows: James Pender- grast, President, John Mollette, Vice President and Willa M. Johnson, Sec- retary. For the first time since 1928-29 the Sophomore debating team de- feated the freshmen. Persons responsible for this brilliant victory were Molten Zachary, James Pendergrast and Pearl Garrett. When the smoke from the celebration of the victory had faded away, the dazed students of A. and T. were again made sophomore conscious when four ' 39ers, Loretta Bagwell, Julia Snead, James Pendergrast and Charles Higgins, were elected to the Register Staff. Having the experience of one year of college athletic competition to their credit. John Ghee, Allen Lynch and Charles Pope were more out- standing as sophomore members of the football squad than as freshmen. The entire school paid homage to James Riddick. James Jlitchell, Allen Lynch and Samuel Hodges for the spectacular playing during the basket- ball season. Undoubtedly, without the aid of these four men, A. and T. would not have won the C. L A. A. Championship in basketball. Leon Davenport, a ' 39er, was trainer for the championship team. Another September found the class of ' 39, no longer green freshmen or wise sophomores but smug juniors. The class officers for this year were James Pendergrast, President, Carl Johnson, Vice President, Marsh- all Campbell, Treasurer, Willa M. Johnson, Secretary and Montee Wynn. Reporter. This was a busy year for the ' 39ers. As Juniors they became more serious and conscious in their school work. During this year the idea of publishing an annual was submitted to the class by our president. This project was enthusiastically accepted by the class and a staff of the fol- lowing persons was elected: Mercer Ray, Editor, J. King, Business Man- ager and V. Macomson, Assistant Business Manager. Page twenty-nine jra i iraifrairf ii r7Ti[irri i rTnitTff i iTr tit7i Lgaiimisa gjii THE 1939 AYANTEE A very successful Junior and Senior Prom was sponsored Ijy the class The Juniors, seniors and their company danced in a lieautifully decorated gym to the sophisticated swing of the A. and T. Serenaders. Retaining the same officers as in our Junior vear, with the exception of James Brown, Treasurer, the ' . ' Wers while looking at the past in view resolved not to rest on past laurels. Allen Lynch and M. Q. Godley made many sepia all conference elevens Lynch was captain of the team and Godley in his second year of competition was an outstanding linesman. Bidding goodbye to inter-collegiate comijetition on the hard wood were James Riddick, Captain. .James Mitchell and Allen Lynch. For the last four years the debating team has not lost a conference debate. Tlie class of ' 39 has jilaced on this team, brilliantlv coached by Mr. Russell Brooks, the following persons: Freshman year, Molton Zach- ary, and James Pendergrast, Sophomore, Junior and Senior vears. Pearl Garrett and James Pendergrast. For the jiast two years tliese persons have been vice president and president of tiie team respectively. Soon we shall reach that mile stone for which we have so diligently striven, when President Bluford or some duly appointed person will sa.v, By the power vested in me by the State of North Carolina, I do hereby confer upon you the degree of ! the class of ' 39 will pass on, knowing the record left behind is one they can truly be proud of.
