PHOTOGRAPHS AND MEMORIES Dedication of 1978 Banner — Tom Wojno We dedicate the 1978 Ban- ner to a departed friend and classmate, Tom Wojno. Even though “Butts” is not physi- cally with us he is remem- bered in our hearts and will always be a part of our class. He is bound in our memories by his friendly manner and warm smile. And so we, the class of '78, dedicate our Banner from the bottom of our hearts to a beloved class- mate and beautiful human being who can never really leave us. Young Angels When God calls young people to dwell with Him above. We mortals sometimes question the wisdom of His love. For no heartache compares with the death of a friend. It sometimes takes forever for a broken heart to mend. Perhaps God tires of calling the aged to His fold. So he picks a rosebud before it can grow old. God knows how much we need them, and so He takes but few To make the land of Heaven more beautiful to view. Believing this is difficult still somehow we must try. The saddest word makind knows will always be “Goodbye.” So when a classmate departs we who are left behind Must realize God loves young people. Angels are hard to find. 4 Directors and Administrators This year Northern Cambria's School Board dealt with the familiar problems of heavy snow and fuel shortages. They worked successfully with these and other difficulties for the benefit of our school. Mr. Richard E. Zanella, High School Principal Dr. Anthony N. Bearer, Administrative Assistant 7 Faculty It’s sometimes difficult for a student seated in a classroom to think of a teacher as being anything other than a teacher. But each member of the NC faculty is a real person who “wishes it was Friday,” too. Teachers don’t enjoy grading papers, recording “F's,” or hassling kids about homework. They help students to make the best of themselves and with a little cooper- ation they succeed. We don't use “the two finger method.” Mrs. Gilda Byrnes, Mr. Victor Chervenak, Mr. Neil Pavlock, Mrs. Althea Laurito — Business Ed. Miss Dolores Kline — English She doesn’t scare me. MANAGERS o Dar n Cr ia Victory! Football '78 The Colt season started off slow, mainly because of an inexperienced line, but as the season rambled on the Colts started to gallop. Under the leadership of coach Steve Magulick, the Colts, winning 4 out of the last 5 games, used a 56-0 thrashing over North Star to springboard their way to a 5- 4-1 record which included major victories over Bishop Guilfoyle and Cambria Heights. As the Colts played each game, their togetherness and teamwork became uncanny. Each man played for the benefit of the team as a whole, not for individual success. And, as Head Coach Magulick said, “This is probably the closest team I have ever seen play and they went out with a bang after all.” COACHES: John Yuhas, Ted Pawlikowski COACHES: Dan Weber, John Sibert, Bob Williams No get up and go. During this time the seniors shared many unforgettable expe- riences which gave the team a special feeling of friendship. The foundation of the varsity team was made up of 17 seniors. Sprited with their hard work and determination the Colts once again finished the season in vic- tory. 48 Chico — Fullback, Defensive Halfback 75 Jake — Tackle 33 Jubie — Halfback, Safety 24 Shed — Halfback, Cornerback 12 Rock — Quarterback, Middle Line- backer Wrong ball, Marie. Girls Basketball The Girls' basketball team went through many practices before the season came up and during this time they shared many things with each other. In addition to the aches and pains, bruises, stoved fingers, and pulled muscles, the girls will always have fond memories of working together and becoming a close-knit team. With the help of Coach Paul Artley and a new assistant coach, Janice Kosto, the team is improving more and more each year. They will continue to do their best throughout future seasons. Something landed on my head! Shoot for the stars Assistant Coach — Janice Kosto, Head Coach — Paul Artley MANAGERS: Lisa Holtz, Sheila Tomallo, The Junior Varsity Squad of'77 '78 Peggy DelBrocco Boys’ Basketball This season the boys' basketball team fared far better than most people expected. With a squad of 4 seniors, 2 juniors, and 5 sopho- mores, they compiled a record of 15-10, and at one point during the season they were 11 -2. Their greatest victory was over Johnstown Bishop McCort in the District 6 play offs. The season ended with a disappointing loss to Bald Eagle Area for the Moshanon League Championship. However the team did win the Moshanon Christmas Tournament and the Southern League Section. Tom Yuhas was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder with 729 points and 328 rebounds. He broke Greg Kuhn’s scoring average record by sinking 29.2 points per game. He ended his career with 1546 points and 948 rebounds. Also making notable contributions to the team were seniors Gary Jubas, known for his powerful rebounding ability, Tom Rocco, for his keen dribbling talents, and Chuck Dunchak, for his excellent shoot- ing. Sophomores Jim Brown, Dan Boothman, Ken Bodek, and Brian D'Andrea and Junior Phil Bonneau also helped considerably. Even though we had our ups and downs, we found that through togetherness, diligence and effort under the direction of Mr. Paul Berendt, we were able to do our best and become a good playing unit. With the help of Mr. Mark Previte, the band was able to perform Handel With Care at the Cambria Heights game and add a little extra to the half-time show. Cheerleaders Starting the year off with a new squad and a new spon- sor, Mrs. Kosto, the varsity cheerleaders helped to build the N. C. spirit that kept our school strong. Whether it was making signs or serving at luncheons, cheerleaders were there to add a spark of enthusiasm to any event. Throughout the year, these eight girls have demon- strated the true meaning of cheerleading — pride in one’s school and pride in one's self. Hard at work. Months of picture-taking, layout work, and cropping went into this year’s yearbook, including a sixteen page color section. Along with Mrs. Konitsky and Mr. Kelly, the staff was able to complete the Banner. Editor — Lori Mulraney, Co-editor — Karen McCormick Photographers Emanon The 1977-78 Emanon staff, advised by Ms. Michele Andrykovitch and Mr. Dan Kelly, pulled it all together to produce a monthly paper. Edited by Gigi Marino and staffed by a majority of underclassmen, this year’s Emanon reflected the underclassmen's spirit and creativity. Aside from the special and regular issues, the staff also produced a literary magazine. Still Life In Moving Thought. The senior issue, edited by Kathi Lubert, Dianna Dolges, and Jenny Conner, was the finale of a good year. Editor: Gigi Marino Emanon Typists Student Council Student Council is an active service organization composed of representatives from each homeroom, class presidents, and Honor Society members. Under the supervision of Miss Carolyn Blose, the students worked to complete many school and community projects ranging from singing Christmas carols at the local hospital to governing the student body during an open-lunch program. The Stu- dent Council has shown much determination and dedication through their efforts to improve our school. Rest Assured After weeks of rehearsing with the help of Miss Dolores Kline and Mrs. Althea Laurito, this intriguing three-act comedy was presented to the students of NC by the Dramatics Club. The play included the antics of an Italian ghost, a devil, and a nervous businessman who finally “dreamt” his way into a better lifestyle. Activities This unique program enables students here at NC to participate in everything from trivia to hiking. It took many months of planning and a solid week of hard work to make the gym fit the 1978 Prom theme. “Come Sail Away With Me.” Under the new supervision of Mrs. Dolansky and Miss Barkhymer, the romantic atmosphere of docks, ships, and the sea made an evening with that special date a night to always remember. After nearly three hours of riding, we arrived at the Washington Zoo only to be drenched again by the rain.
