Mr. Zanella’s high school days were filled with many activities. He played football and was a member of a winning basketball team with a 26 to 1 record. He was a member of the National Honor Society and recipient of awards in math and science. Mr. Zanella attended Indiana University where he received his B.A. in teaching and completed his graduate work at Penn. State. Mr. Zanella won National Science Foundation Scholarships at Michigan and at Vanderbilt. His first teaching job was at Holidaysburg where he coached a championship Junior High football team. Before coming to Northern Cambria, Mr. Zanella was Assistant Principal at Lock Haven High School for one year. Always working, always interested, Mr. Zanella kept NCHS operating smoothly and efficiently. His outstanding achievements were in discipline and curriculum development. Yet he was never too busy to stop and talk with a student or extend a warm smile. With admiration and deep respect the Banner Staff proudly dedicates Banner ’75 to Mr. Zanella. Charles Veil — Head Custodian Lewis Miller Mrs. Rose Nastasi This has to be the best time of the day. % 17 We entered NCHS as freshmen, a road we traveled four years. Each year we crossed a stone further into life. We passed the world of jammed lockers, lazy study halls, and homework into Vietnam, Nixon's resignation and energy crises. And the day we graduated we left a little behind. . . memories of the way we were. Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me I can’t light no more of your darkness All my pictures seem to fade to black and white I’m growing tired and time stands still before me Frozen here on the ladder of my life. Too late to save myself from falling I took a chance and changed your way of life But you misread my meaning when I met you Closed the door and left me blinded by the light. Don’t let the sun go down on me Although I search myself, it’s always someone else 1 sec I’d just allow a fragment of your life to wander free But losing everything is like the sun going dow n on me. I can’t find Oh. the right romantic line But see me once and see the w'ay I feel Don’t discard me just because you think I mean you harm But these cuts I have, Oh, they need love to help them heal. With team names like the Dug-out, Wizzies, Overalls, and Meatballs, who could imagine otherwise? This was the first year for this activity which was sponsored by Miss Ludwig. Lots of fun, laughs, and giggles were shared by all members. The Health Careers club sponsored by Mrs. Margorie Linden was formed to introduce students to different areas of the medical field. Activities included guest speakers, films, a science project sponsored by the Cambria County Cancer Society. A trip to the Ebensburg Child Development Center and Ebensburg State School was not only educational but interesting. Co-ed Volleyball Health Careers Golf Golfing brought many fun-filled moments of enjoyment to all its members. They practiced their tee-offs under the watchful eye of Mr. Whited who made sure he kept his distance. When the weather was nice you could see golfers outside taking advantage, but not even bad weather could efeat them, for golf- ing magazines were available to get tips from the pros. The Spanish Club sponsored by Sr. Rey was an educational experience for its members. Besides viewing films of the Spanish way of life, the club went to Indiana University for a Spanish Festival where they witnessed Span- ish customs, such as food, dress and recrea- tion. Key Club members assisted Kiwanians in their Fund-Raising Pro- jects Hiking, one of the largest attended activities sponsored by Miss Blose, Mr. Yuhas, and Mrs. Chervenak enjoyed fresh air, snow, and sunshine during all four seasons. Stamping and stacking books and filing cards and helping students as much as possible! These are some things NC librarians did under the supervision of Mr. Krug. Their library periods helped keep the library in shape and a good place to study. Hiking Student Librarians Dart Games Dan games were sponsored by Mr. Ted Pawl- ikowski. Boys involved competed against each other in this new activity. Mr. Hood and Mrs. Kelly were advisors of Archery Club. Members were instructed on safe handling and use of archery equipment for hunting. Antique Club was a new activity sponsored by Mr. John Frontino. Members exhibited dis- plays and participated in a sledding party. Archery Club Antique Club Metallic Art The girls of N.C. Metallic Arts worked hard to learn the skill of turning metal into works of an. They did this under the guidance of Mr. Churella who was always there to lend a helping hand. N.C. activities combine fun with learning. One example is Wood Crafts. Its members had fun while learning something that will help them many years after graduation. Mr. Miller advised the club. With the quickly advancing field of commu- nicating it is hard to keep up. Audio Visual helped some students to understand and keep up while the rest of us were left in the dark. Mr. Fisanick is adviser. Wood Crafts Audio Visual Heads Together Heads Together in the 1974-75 year proved to be an interesting study of morality. Members talked about varied subjects such as venereal disease, birth control, drugs, and alcohol. Work Study One of the least talked about of all the activi- ties is the work study program. Most students didn’t even consider it an activity, but in real- ity there were more hours spent in this pro- gram than practically any other. Work study was a successful program. It taught the student some of the responsibili- ties that will be required later in life, along with the fact that you can earn some money too. Rick Valenty showed one of the advan- tages of work study as being able to afford a setup like this one. 93 95 A Tough Sport Requires Determined Men 96 ROW 1 Jim Skupaka. Dave Abrams. Jim McAnultv. Mr. Pawlikowski was a good football player in high school (Bamesboro) but because of the lack of size, he had no desire to play college football. He joined Mr. Miller’s staff in 1964 and learned a lot of football from him, from Mr. Price and Mr. Chcrvcnak. For the next three years he served as Mr. Price’s assistant in coaching junior high. When Mr. Price went up to the varsity, he was in charge of the junior high team for the next five years. The highlight for that period was an undefeated and unscored upon team in 1968. The last three years Mr. Pawlikowski spent as a varsity assistant. Now after eleven years of coaching football at NC, he felt it was time to call it quits. He says, He would like to thank those coaches and football players who made his coaching at NCHS enjoyable.” 102 Coach Pawlikowski Ted in action Another Fascinating Year for Coach Ludwig Coach Ludwig had a great year with the Coltettes. All the time that she has put into NC’s girl’s basketball payed off in the end. All her patience, hard work, and thoughts were deeply appreciated. 1 103 Senior Coltettes To these girls winning became a tradition. Dribbling, shooting, rebounding and passing aren’t all of what made up the girls' basketball season. There were tears, excitement, practices until 10:30, Freddie, shaving cream, and the Skyline League Championship. Under the coaching and guidance of Miss Ludwig the girls had a successful season. Keep calm,” were her famous words and always seemed to put confidence into the girls. They led N.C.’s spirit through football, girls’ bas- ketball and boys’ basketball. The prom took place on May 16 in the gymnasium. Music was provided by Spec- trum. The enchanting atmosphere was created by the hard work of Mrs. Zagata, Mrs. Shutry, and the Junior class. The King and Queen of the 1975 prom were Tony DcPetro and Nancy Bobak. The senior trip to Washing- ton, D.C. was made on May 21, 22, and 23. Seniors will long remember the historical sights, the hot, humid weather, the waiting in line at Scholls Cafeteria, and the fun nights at Howard John- sons Motor Lodge. Senior Trip Hmmm! Very interesting A hearty meal at Scholl’s National Honor Society Eighteen new students were inducted in the National Honor Society on March 21, 1975.
