1970 BANNER orthern Cambria High School In the Henry David Thoreau centennial year, we are reminded that man is, at times, an independent being. Grouped as a school, we know that man is, at times, also part of a society. This is the 1970 Banner theme: the individual and the group. We believe in both. Northern Cambria regrets this loss and wishes him a happy retirement. It is probably impossible for us to estimate properly the contribution of Mr. James Hazen to the Northern Cambria School System. When Mr. Hazen became Superintendent of Schools in 1967, we were a dis- tressed district; when he retired in 1970, we were probably the most financially sound in the county. With Mr. Cyril Stevens, business manager, Mr. Hazen has worked quietly and effectively. Their long hours on behalf of this school have not gone unnoticed. 69 In Appreciation The graduating class of 1970 would like to express their appreciation and thanks to Mrs. Erma Konitsky and Mr. William Nealen for their work and effort in furthering the cause of education. They were always ready to lend a helping hand. SPORTS Determination and pride, the extra ef- fort given for the team, and for one's own self-satisfaction. Coaches form- ing the winning combination in basket- ball, football, and track but, even more important, teaching that good sportsmanship in competition is far more crucial to the team than victory. 196 9 .C. Throughout the 69 season, the Colts displayed teamwork and sportsmanship as they confronted their foes. From the moment the ball was snapped until the referee signaled a touchdown, the boys never let up. The record shows a 4-6 season, but it doesn't show the sweat, aching muscles, and bruises that the boys withstood as they gave the game all they had. Greatest satisfac- tion came with the 35-0 defeat of Highlanders. With sustained drive, they se- cured an improved record of seven wins and fifteen losses. The entire season was characterized by close, exciting games. The first thriller was a contest with United. After the buzzer had sounded to end the game, two pressure-packed foul shots by Gregg Welter- oth gave the victory to the Colts. In their first en- counter with the Harmony Owls, the Colts experi- enced heartbreak by dropping the game in double overtime. Then in the next meeting the Colts nipped the Owls by the same margin. Close games with Cambria Heights and Penns Manor also afforded great excite- ment. The 1970 team demon- strated new spark in all fields of competition. Losing by only six points to Cambria Heights and 5% points to Ferndale, Northern Cambria made a noteworthy showing. This outstanding record can only be attributed to the unfaltering spirit of the members of the team. With a lot of practice and good backing they gave their all in every meet.
