“
The students at Northern Cambria are real people, and being real people, our staff wanted a theme for this book which would convey true sentiments of our days at NC. Wishing to give credit to those who have enriched our lives, we picked the theme of time, hoping to honor those who deserve credit for hat they did for the senior class in its years at school. Time oversees and predicts the course of men's lives. Time, as it must, to all. Northern Cambria High School Time it was, And what a time it was, It was . . . Teachers, students, secretaries, staff—administration, together working to achieve many things—scholarship, integrity, vitality. Young lives, old lives, all given meaning by each other. II This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper. —T. S. Eliot Dedication Meeting all of the demands upon a high school principal seems impossible. For 31 years, William J. Taylor did with a bang the impossible. Men he had influenced as boys distinguished themselves, some gaining na- tional recognition. Each year our principal set the course for over a thousand people until his fire was ex- hausted by the few whose whimpers needed constant attention. The bang Mr. Taylor once made still echoes in the ears of those who love him: we keep hearing the philosophy, laughter, instruction, discipline, thunder; the intercom chimes, stop in your tracks and now here this . . Now hear this. He was a good teacher. He was the star which for a time gave our com- munity its sense of direction. That our lives have consumed his is natural and necesary: we continue a universal theme already recorded upon the parchments of mankind; we re-create the story to be told again so long as any grand old shape burns Its image upon a fresh new form. Even those whimpers—they sustain sound until Mr. Taylor's thought in the voice of its new speaker finds its next listener. And so the world does not really end. William J. Taylor Dr. Angelo Laurito, elementary principal; W. J. Taylor, high school principal; James Hazen, supervising principal; Peter Kopas, president, Board of Education. 12 James Hazen, supervising principal Cyril R. Stevens, business manager Administration Both current demands and plans for the future kept the NC administrative team hard at work in 1969. Great interest was shown in the following ac- tivities: band, cheerleading cho- rus, majorettes, and in athletic fields. The Sophomores are to be commended for their loyalty to each other and to their school. In two weeks we'll have enough for a class- room. Learn- ing to be competitive—learning to be fair, enriched by both the failures and successes. Coaches teaching young men that winning counts after all, young men remembering successes, rewarded in body and spirit.  73 Football The Colts of 68-69 were true champions. Though smaller than every team they faced, the Colts put out—even when they were losing. Their record of 4-5-1 was not indicative of the fine ball they played. Though they either lost or tied each of their first four games, they came back to win the next three, a good ex- ample of spirit. The Millermen's greatest satisfaction came with a 34-18 victory over Cambria Heights. Assistant Coaches—Vic Chervenak, John Bernard, Jim Price. The joy of winning, dis- appointment of losing, roar of the crowd—spirit, enthusiasm, pride. 76 Shots from the Homecoming Game with Purchase Line and the Veteran's Day game with Cambria Heights are prime examples of the brand of football played by the 69 Colts. Basketball The '69 wipeout of the Colts' bas- ketball team was not entirely the fault of the players. The combination of inexperience and indecision hurt the team before the season started. Their record of two wins and nine- teen losses is not to be envied, but they gave it all they had. Both wins, one over Cambria Heights and a sec- ond over Purchase Line, came at the end of the season, showing their de- sire and determination. John Yuhas 84 Track After an absence of thirteen years, track was brought back to NC. Head Coach Ted Keenan and his assistant Mr. Bill Kudlawiec put together a re- spectable team with their fifty boys. Our thinclads had a four meet sched- ule and participated in the Cambria County and District 6 meets. As the season progressed we gained more experience and in our last meet, which was held at home, we beat Cambria Heights. This was quite an accomplishment for our first year team. Band, cheer- .leaders, librarians, journalism—activities enjoyed by participants and school alike. Betterment, progress, scholarship—honors, service, all go hand in hand to help prepare students for the future. Homecoming 68 October 11 ... a time of excite- ment. The events of the evening be- gan with a parade. The crowning of the homecoming queen, Sophia Dobransky, preceded the kick-off of the Northern Cambria-Purchase Line game. The visiting Governor Mifflin High School Band performed at half- time. An exciting win for the Colts and a dance for the queen and her court added special touches to a won- derful night. The scenes took place in a home for the mentally ill, concerned with a not-so-ill Mrs. Savage, who seemed to have some money others wanted. The cast did an excellent job, and the play was a big success. CAST: Standing, Left to Right: Gary Lubert, Dan Susick, Ann Miller, Jeff Long, Darlene Dumm, Doug George, Rick Westover. Homecoming, the SG's major undertaking of 69, was successful, enjoyed by students and faculty alike. The other activities of the Student Govern- ment included sponsoring dances and Senior Day. The 69 Chorus was something new at NC— it was mixed. The members sang at concerts, school events, and for charity, adding to all the events that special 'something'— Mr. Frank Koziel, in his first year at North- ern Cambria, deserves much of the credit for their fine performances, as do the members themselves. 03 Circus The Circus of 1969 was, as always, better than the last. Mrs. Maud Lewis, retir- ing this year, gave it all she had and came off with a bril- liant show. Acrobatics, gym- nastics, and local talent high- lighted the show. Those who attended can all agree that a splendid time is guaran- teed for all. 104 All the students who participated in the Circus agreed on one thing—it was fun. The Circus itself demonstrates to area residents the type of physical training students receive at Northern Cambria. 105 Journalism High school journalism at Northern Cambria, in the form of a yearbook and newspaper, helped promote throughout the year school spirit, morale, and an enjoyable academic atmosphere.
