Linda Good NORTHERN CAMBRIA HIGH SCHOOL BANNER 1968 i By their fruits shell you know them. ■ Dr. W. Marcellus Leonard, to whom the Senior Class respectfully dedicated the 1968 Banner, left Northern Cambria after 29 years service. His departure ended the teamwork of Leonard and Taylor which led many lives to deeper fulfillment, and which produced great, nationally known alumni. Children as we were, we did not fathom what tides in affairs of men flooded his sea of good deeds in this school district. We left it to those who knew to search the shores and shallows. William J. Taylor High School Principal Our experiences at Northern Cambria High School are gone, but our memories live on. This book, a remembrance of 1967-68, will help us relive those days we spent as one. That was a year of happiness of pride expressed by all who said, I'm from NC. Football and basketball games, Homecoming, plays, prom, and graduation added color to the scene of students and teachers at work. We watched underclassmen sharing the news as they walked the halls to their classes. We realized that the pattern they were shaping was a sketch of the picture we, as seniors, had just completed. As we passed this book to you, the oncoming seniors, we hoped that your graduation year would be as fullfilling as ours was: Class of 1968. 4 Alma Mater Hail to thee O Northern Cambria We with reverence sing to thee, Of our love and our devotion Of our faith and loyalty. We will cherish thy protection We will strive to win thee fame; We will thirst for thine affection We will always love thy name. Mr. Taylor forever reminded us that schoolwork came first. The few who worked best earned awards; they and all who learned shared the greater rewards of knowledge and wisdom. W. J. Taylor Dr. Shields presented Gale Campbell the War Memorial Cheerleading Scholarship Jo Ann Previte, high in class ranlc, won the Journalism Service Award 6 George Hnatkovich. Darlene Michaels, and Jo Ann Mitory, top-ranking Commercial students, demonstrate data pro- cessing Joyce Bresnock won the Betty Crocker Homemak- ing Award Junior Gloria Yonkoske copped the District First Place Trophy in the American League Essay on Americanism Contest Karen Pawlikowski placed first in the VFW Voice of Democracy Contest 7 Karen Pawlikowski, VFW Voice of Democracy Award; Lucille Duriez, Home Economics and Crisco Award; Darlene Michaels, Outstand- ing Business Student; Joyce Bresnock, Betty Crocker Award; Jo Ann Previte, Journalism Service Award; Sandra Bonanno. Vale- dictorian; Levonne Suwinski, School Service Award; Gale Campbell, Salutatorian, Bausch and Lomb Science Award. St. Francis College 8 These attained a senior's highest ambition—to be cited for excel- lence at Commencement Exercises. Principal W. J. Taylor congratulates Gale Campbell Mathematics Award; Michael Zurenko, Industrial Arts Award: Peter Barczak, School Service Award: George Hnatkovich, President's Gavel. BPW Award; Edward Berti, I Dare You Award: Timothy Clifton. American Legion Oratorical Award. 9 10 There was pain in anticipation. Activities' highlights like these involved us with others in creative, social, and athletic events. PEOPLE ... to be willing to give when there is no more to give, so that honor and justice may live . . These words from the Senior Class Song expressed the quality which so many people at Northern Cambria had. Our teachers especially were people who were will- ing to give. We, the graduating class, will never forget the NC people for helping us to live with honor and justice. Michael Elias, Board of Education President Dr. W. Marcellus Leonard Super- intendent of Schools until Novem- ber. 1967 According to Mr. Elias, the best work of this group was planning for a new elementary school building and keeping good relations with the staff in a time of unsolved problems. School Directors: Joseph D'Andrea. Franlc Perrone, Charles McNulty. Michael Elias, John Drahnak. Joseph Bernard, John Collinash. Robert Kayden. Absent: Peter Kopas and Ben Root 14 W. J. Taylor and James M. Hazen In his first year as super- vising principal of Northern Cambria, Mr. Hazen tried to tread softly, but didn't go unnoticed. Students and teachers discovered him to be a strong administrator, a genial friend, and a good man. NC secretaries were al- ways helpful—quiet, smiling, pleasant; they brightened every school day. Most welcome were 5 aides who handled clerical jobs. M iss Bernadette Hromulalc with. Here you learn how to use a micro- scope, how to dissect critturs such as frogs, crayfish and grasshop- pers, and how to name the bones of the body from the skeleton. In the eighth grade, students have a diversi- fied curriculum. Science and geography courses are each taken half a year. In science they learn about the earth and elements by means of experiments. After having geography, their knowledge of countries and people of the world has been increased. 59 Seventh Grade The Seventh grade col- lected money for their use in two ways. Each student paid his dues. They also spon- sored bake sales. Each home- room used its money for its own special project at the end of the year. Seventh graders were able to partici- pate in all Junior High events including sports and extra- curricular activities. Pres.—Mary Jean Vivadelli V. SPORTS If seeing is believing, look at our trophy case; for the short life of NC, there is the result of pride and self-sacrifice, Victor Chervenak, director of athletics, recently pointed out. There was the golden testimony that NC's teams are winning teams. There was also the evidence of virtues developed in our athletes, and the spirit of backing up our boys that united us all. Although the Colts 1967-68 record of 4 wins and 6 losses does not indicate a winner, in the minds of students and area fans, this year's team was a team of champions. A break could have changed a losing campaign to a winning one. The first two games netted defeats by a total of just 6 points. Then came a win over Curwensville. In the fourth game against arch rival Indiana, fans saw a 13- point lead at halftime fall to the Western Pennsylvania Class A champions. After losing 3 of their first 4 games, Dan Miller's Colts came back to win 3 of their remaining games and almost pull out a 500 season. 1968 FOOTBALL SCOREBOARD 26 Conemaugh Twp.............28 6 Windber ..................10 33 Curwensville .............19 25 Indiana ..................32 27 United ................... 7 6 Dubois .................. 27 38 Richland .................20 27 Penn Cambria ............. 0 26 Homer-Center ............. 7 13 Cambria Heights ..........27 ROW I: Mike Revak, Bob Perott, John Onufro, Gory Steele. We were the warm people. At a special event, we cared. Anywhere you went, for instance you could see a proud guy in a Colt jacket, and if it was too hot, he just unbuttoned it and sweated it out. No, not too cool. See page 80. 80 NC cheer- leaders were the sparks that ignited the fiery school spirit by leading the student body at f o o t b a 11 and basketball games.
