NORTHERN CAMBRIA HIGH SCHOOL 19 64 BANNER Foreword . . . A yearbook should be the reflection of a school’s personality. The student body, the seniors in particular, what it does, what it is, how it conducts itself, what others think of it, determines the kind of personality the school will assume. What type of personality have you developed for your school? In this edition, the Banner staff will attempt to illustrate what you, the student body, have accomplished to this end. With this in mind, we present to you the 1964 Banner. Contents Dedication Administration and Faculty Senior Class Underclassmen Favorites Athletics Activities and Organizations Patrons Mrs. Margaret Mary Haines Walters In memoriam, we dedicate this edition of the Ban- ner to Mrs. Margaret Mary Haines Walters and to Mr. Francis Shortencarrier. Mrs. Walters and Mr. Shortencarrier possessed a unique quality; they loved life, and they lived it to its fullest. They were never too busy to give a friendly smile or lend a helping hand. Their out- going personalities drew people to them. Though these members of the faculty have passed away, they will live on in their students; they have given part of themselves to each and every one of us. The part they played in molding our lives is ineffable. We thank them for choosing teaching as their life’s work; for, had they not chosen this field, many of us would have been denied the privilege of having known them. We Dedicate In Memoriam . . . 6 Mr. Francis Shortencarrier . Administration ‘ “Ours is the only country deliberately founded on a good idea.” John Gunther Our Administrators To the Northern Cambria Joint High School Seniors: I want to express my wish that all of you enjoy good health and happiness. May you always have fond memories of your high school days. Dr. W. Marcellus Leonard Supervising Principal We have now completed another successful year at Northern Cambria. The board of education, administrators, counselors, and faculty have done their best to guide, to understand, to discipline, and to prepare you to take your place in society. I dare you graduating seniors to take your first steps confidently with the knowledge that you have had every educational opportunity. I dare you to use all that you have derived from your education to help perpetuate the democratic way of life. I dare you to enter society with the idea that you can do something, however great or small, to make this world a better place in which to live. I dare you to strive to develop fully your capabilities. I dare you to always do your best regardless of your station in life. I dare you to be the best leaders, em- ployers, employees, parents, and most important, the best citizens. I short, I dare you to succeed. Mr. J. E. Johnston Assistant Supervising Principal Are Progressive It is difficult for most of you to realize how fortunate you are in having the educational facilities such as you have here. The diligence, interest, and understanding of those in your charge will be better understood by you as you grow older. In future years when in a moment of reflection as you leaf through the pages of the Banner you will realize how great those high school days really were. Good luck to you on your journey through life. Hugo E. Vivadelli Principal School Board Links Education With Community Seated: Alfred Weakland, Daniel R. Lovette, James J. Dumm, John ID. Guidance counselors Mary Margaret Flanagan and Blair Leonard are always glad to sit down with us and discuss our problems, help us to make decisions, and to understand more about ourselves. They encourage us to set our goals high and counsel us on how to achieve them. Vernon Krug, N.C.H.S. librarian, has dubbed the library a learning laboratory which supplements classroom work. Mr. Krug has worked hard to stock his library with educational materials to aid students in their studies. 10 12 Victor Chervenak Commercial Gordon Durbin Physics Hilda Fees Special Education Carolyn Blose Mathematics Sally Brletrick Mathematics Eleanor Commons Art Gilda Byrnes Commercial Gennaro Cantalope Commercial Blair DeYarmin Science James Drew History Alice Haines History Verner Hanson Social Science Charles Keenan Physical Education Paul Kline Science Robert Gobrecht Louise Gordon Music Social Science John Hornick Social Science Grace Hornauer Latin 14 7 Daniel Miller Industrial Arts William Nealen James Price Mathematics English William Taylor Joseph Szymusiak Chemistry Industrial Arts Jean Scollon Gladys Shutty Surse Home Economics Jay Wasilko Leo Westrick English English i Seniors “Be Americans. The setting of the story was historic Salem, Massachusetts. The leading roles were portrayed by Richard Zanella and Nancy Nastasi as Duff and Joan O'Hara. Having bought a house which supposedly was haunted by Sandra Hicks in the role of Agatha Forbes, the couple settled down to await Agatha’s yearly arrival. To celebrate the event, a party was prepared to celebrate Agatha’s arrival. Agatha arrived on the scene accompanied by a thunder storm and bolts of lightning. Agatha in her wrath tried in vain to have the occupants move from the house, and refused to leave until her mission was accomplished. Joan, who managed to keep her wits about her, solved the riddle of how to free Agatha from her house haunting obligation. All is ultimately straightened out to everyone’s satisfaction. Students demonstrated amazing skill in acrobatics, rope climbing, and trampoline artistry. Senior Trip After many months of diligent preparation, the senior class was finally receiving its reward. Early Wednesday morning, April 22, three buses loaded with seniors, sponsors, bus drivers, fried chicken, and luggage disembarked for Wash- ington, D. C. At 12:45, the group arrived safely in Wash- ington, whereupon they visited the zoo and luncheoned. That day also included tours of the Franciscan Monastery, the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the Wax Museum, the Archives Building, and the National Airport. The eager tourists rose early again the next morning, giving them ample time to visit the Jefferson Memorial, Mount Vernon, and to wit- ness the changing of the guards at the tomb of the Unknowns. This year the class was privileged to have Karen Learner and Vincent Messina place a wreath at the Tomb. After- wards the group viewed the grave of the late John F. Kennedy, the Capitol Building, the Senate, the FBI Building, and the Washington Monument. That evening an excursion boat took them up the Potomac River 21 miles to an amusement park. During the boat trip the touring seniors had an opportunity to socialize with students from other schools and dance to an excellent band. The third day, a very tired but eager group of seniors visited the Bureau of Engraving, the Supreme Court, and finally the Smithsonian In- stitute. At four o’clock the inspired and weary but happy seniors ascended the buses to begin their homeward journey. They arrived in Barnes- boro at 12:30 with litlte energy left, but with many wonderful memories of a tour they’ll never forget. Guest Speaker—Senator Birch Bayh James Greggi, Valedictorian nmencement On June 5, 1964, the long awaited day arrived when one hundred thirty-one seniors of the class of ’64 received their diplomas from Northern Cambria High School, which terminated their high school days and marked for them the beginning of a new way of life. Guest speaker for the event was the distinguished Senator Birch Bayh of the State of Indiana. The invocation was delivered by Reverend Father John Bartolomucci. Awards were made by the principal, Hugo Vivadelli, to Richard Zanella, Dorothy Bearer, Gloria Christoff, and James Greggi. Diplomas were presented by the supervising principal. Dr. W. M. Leonard. The Junior-Senior Prom took place on the beautiful summer evening of Friday, May 15. At 9:00 p.m., all were dancing enchantedly at Sunset Ballroom to the orchestra of Barry Blue. The theme, Singing in the Rain, created decorations which transformed the immense ballroom into a dreamland of flowers and rainbows. Dennis Calvetti and Diane Artley were crowned king and queen of the prom. Their court consisted of Sandy Hicks, Sandy Fabert, Lana LaRocque, Joseph Salbego, Thomas Frontino, and Robert Woods.
