I do not mean to fill his requirements in this letter to you. My hope is that I can convey my feelings and, perhaps , Steinbeck's at graduation time. If there is a truth I believe in, then it is probably that life and society run in cycles. Rigid discipline is the way it was when I was your age. Love, Duty, Respect for Mom and Dad, Respect for the Flag and Love for our Country were the order of the day. Time has passed since Iwas a boy, and with no regret I watched the pendulum swing from strict discipline to a greater freedom of choice and then back to more and more accountability for what we say and, more importantly, for what we do. Steinbeck also wrote that as Americans . . .we are restless , dissatisfied, a searching people, we spend our time searching for security yet hate it when we get it . As Americans,we have been blessed with the simplicity and magnificence of freedom. Because we have so much, we constantly question our good fortune. Like the child at Christmas , we open our presents with a voracious appetite only to survey our world a few days later and ask, Is that all there is? I do not know all that there is. Ido know that we, you and I, have been blessed with many things these last four years. We have learned, laughed and loved. We have experienced many happy times and a few that were sad. You have questioned us in so many of the things we have done, You are searching, You are rebellious, You are anxious. That anxiety surfaces in your enormous energy that wants to make things better. Steinbeck said, Wasted energy is a little problem compared with the lack of it . America will survive. We have the strength and restlessness of your youth. You have energy -- use it! The Superintendents, the Board of Education, the Principals, and the Guidance Counselors all come under the title of Administration. These members of the Administration are united by the common goal of making our school system the best possible, yet, they each have separate responsibilities in reaching this goal. The Superindentents and the Board of Education may be thought of as our school system's policy makers, but their job is actually more extensive. They deal with student, social, and educational problems, and resolve them. The Principal, Mr. Salvatore, and the two Assistant Principals, Mr. Hann and Mr. Zorn, are the administrators stationed in the high school. They deal with the immediate problems that arise during the school day. Mr. Hann handles any disciplinary problems, and Mr. Zorn is in charge of all the student activities. The Guidance Counselors are administrators who deal directly with students. They aid the students with their course selection and help solve any problems which may occur during the year. Once the academics are taken care of the students can become involved in a number of after school sports activities all co-ordinated bv Mr. Locascio. He organizes a number of different sports for each season, and then arranges schedules with other schools both within and outside. of our conference. So, as a whole, the Administration is a group of hard working people aiding the North Brunswick School System, but it is also comprised of individuals working at their individual assignments to make our high school the best possible. These men and women have the job of making the school operate smoothly. This year, the Board had to work within the limits of a tight budget, making their job that much more difficult. The Board meets monthly in an open session to which the public is invited. ln addition to these meetings there are many closed work sessions in which the basic day to day work is accomplished. Working along with the Board members are other key administrators, these are: the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent in Charge of Business!Board Secretary. ff! To the Class of 1980, ,V ' When the class of 1980 entered North Brunswick Township-'High School four years ago, we encountered an entirely new situationg a new building, new teachers and new administrators. We all felt scared, confusedyand intimidated by the upperclassmen. We accepted these challenges enthusiastically. 'Most important of all we all stuck together as a group facing our problems, and meeting these challenges. Today, we look back to them and accept ,them as learning experiences. Special friendships and special bonds were created betweenthe members of the class which will remain an important part of our memories of N.BgT.H.S. During the years we spent together, not only did we grow together, learn together, but most importantly we matured together. Both the boys' and girls' teams completed their fourth season of competition. The girls' team, led by senior captains Chris Gromek, Nancy Fitzpatrick, and Donna Ronk, finished another successful season with a 10-1 record. The girls won their straight conference title and placed among the top three teams in Middlesex County. Also they went to the State Finals at Holmdel Park. The boys were paced by Conference champion Ken Riley and senior co-captain Greg Goebel. Together with the other runners they accumulated a record of 9-2. Both teams are rebuilding and have a lot of young talent. Good coaching and some fine talent was the right combination as the Varsity Football team had its best season ever, posting a 9-2 mark. Led by Middlesex County Coach of the year, Steve Libro, the team decisively beat every opponent but South River. Thus the team advanced to the Group ll State Championships. On the field the team was led by senior quarterback Dave Brown. Brown frustrated opponents with his ability to run and pass with equal skill. ln the backfield were all-staters john McGrath and Rob Ibrahim, first and second string respectively. McGrath was switched from offensive end to running back when Pepe McDuffy was injured in the opener, and became the leading scorer in Middlesex County. Place-kicker Steve Superick also went on to win scoring honors. All of the above were also named B.A.C. The team was undefeated with a record of 5 wins and 0 losses. The team was also unscored upon in all five games. The team was coached by Varsity coaches, so they reflected many of the varsity team's ideas. The starting quarterback was Steve Superick, who also did the team's kicking duties, Alternating in the backfield were Ken Cosgrove, Chet Weiss, and lim Danna. Other main stays for the Raiders were Gary Schoen, lim Decker, Todd Southard, Mark McDermitt, Bill O'Byrne, Carl Scaturo, Scott Stewart, lim Jennings, and Pat McGinn. These players also played varsity, thus the team should have another strong season next year. Coached by Charles Young and joe Brzowski, the 1979 Freshman football team had a great season, sporting an 8-1 record. The team was led by quarterback joe Policastro. In the backfield were Mike Previte and Scott Mirinov. Previte was also the team leader in scoring. Other Key players on the team were Walt Gural, lay Fritche, Kevin Quish, Kevin Kriegal, Bob Cosgrove, jimmy Lewis, Kyle lackocks, Gary Mitchell, and Pete Hems. The goal of the North Brunswick cheerleaders was to lead the Raider fans in support for the Varsity and junior Varsity Football and Basketball teams. This year the cheerleaders fulfilled their goals throu h the spirited enthusiasm they displayed. Their tasks were made easier with the help of winnin Raider squadi. Under the direction of Ken Addone and Diane Markert, the cheerleaders showed their well developed talent and the well known sportsmanship, which gives North Brunswick teams fine reputation. Varsity captains Sue Meier, lackie Quinn, and Ruth Stasiak were chosen by the other cheerleaders to lead and direct the girls in their exciting routines throughout the seasons. Being a Raider cheerleader is a difficult, but enjoyable activity. Cheering at the games, making posters, and decorating the lockers were all included in the cheerleaders campaign to boost team morale. The football seasons differentiate from the basketball seasons for cheerleaders because a certain level of gymnastic ability must be reached in order to make the basketball cheering squad. Another soccer season has come and gone but this time people took notice. This years soccer club has set a precedent that will be hard to match in the upcoming years. The team, with an excellent record of 12 wins 7 losses gained second place in the BAC after a disappointing loss to South Brunswick, but then did exceptionally well in the state tournament. Using the system of scoring more goals than the other team as often as possible, the team advanced to an unexpected second in the Central jersey, Group Ill State Tournament. With these accomplishments to their credit this years players have set a strong foundation for soccer in North Brunswick. This years team started the season with a few ltradical adjustments , to quote Coach Williston. For instance, the Raider team played with a goalie this year, something very new to them. The senior members of the varsity team: Sue Marguccio, Laurie Combos, and Helayne Sherman. The 1979 Girls Varsity tennis team once again had a winning season. The team's record was 16-4, they were invited to the state and county tournament, and they were named BAC Champs. The team, this year, had four members which were named to the BAC All-Star team: 1st singles-Jeanine Looney, 2nd singles-Linda Sinuk, and ist doubles-Sue Marguccio and Laurie Combos. The additional members of the team were 3rd singles-Margaret Haney and 2nd doubles-jackie Dann and Helayne Sherman. The coach of the team is Mrs. Joyce Lykes. Mrs. Lykes was also named BAC coach of the year. This year's captains were Laurie Combos and leanine Looney, and the departing seniors are Sue Marguccio, Laurie Combos and Helayne Sherman. -Q - M. Posting a .500 mark, this years squad was a young and aggressive team with all five starters being underclassmen. The early season showed a slow start but their improvement was obvious after the scorebook revealed many close games with highly respected opponents. The game plan consisted of a strong defense and balanced scoring w ich gave the team its depth. Senior Cathy Hendricks was an important factor to the team's success because of her ability to play sixth man and handle her position well.' Coach Williston stressed learning and acquiring experience as the top priorities for the Girls junior Varsity Basketball Team. Thelpurpose of the JV squad is to develope skills and game strategy for the upcoming Varsity leve. The team shot their way to a .500 mark with the help of sophomores and freshmen. The 1979-1980 Varsity Basketball team had an excellent season, losing to only two teams in conference play. Coached by Bruno lannone, the team displayed a tough full court man to man defense and a three two offense. The court leader was, senior guard and captain of the team, Dave Salva. Salva was the Middlesex County's leading scorer with about a 24 point average, and also surpassed the one-thousand point mark last year. Teaming up with Salva in the backcourt was iunior Mike Nita. Nita averaged about 17 points a game. Under the boards was Steve Lewis, the leading rebounder, with help from John McGrath, Rob Ibrahim, and Ricky Malinowski. Other mainstays were Chris Tabourne, Eric Knopf, Dave Ostrazewski, Gary Herzfeld, Ken Cosgrove, and Tug McGraw. The team also participated in a Junior Varsity tournament in East Brunswick. Led by Coach Brzowski the team used many ideas of the varsity, including a man to man defense and a 3-2 offense. However the team also displayed a 2-3 zone. The team captain was Chris Dimino, who was teamed up in the backcourt with point guard Pat Donahue. Also in the backcourt was lim Donahue with Kevin Chandlee. Under the boards was center Chris Tabourne, forwards Dave Ostrazewski, Scott Mirinov, Scott Racz, lim White, and Mike Piazza. Overall the team had a very strong year and should strengthen the varsity squad next year. The team was coached by Steve Steinmetz, and the games were played in the high school for the first time. On the court the team was led by guards loe Policastro and Kevin Hudson. Both ran the team and were the teams leading scorers. Under the boards were lay Fritche and Kyle lackocks. Other contributors during the season were Bill Delayo, Mark Weingarten, Tom Sachetti, and Andy Welch. On the whole, the team had a fine season with big wins over New Brunswick and St. Josephs. 3334. The NBTHS Swim Team coached by Mr. Greg Anderson has progressed steadily this year. The team captains, Mars Anagnou and ludy Majeski, guide the team during practices and set a good example for them to follow. This years team will be losing 10 Seniors but there is a sufficient amount of juniors and Sophomores to keep the team ahead. Kay Andrews, a junior swimmer for the school, is a two Sme All-American in free style swimming. She received this title in her Freshman and Sophomore years and hopes to retain it a ain t is year. Tie NBTHS Diving Team has an impressive record this year with Mr. Mikilos as coach. The team will be losing two Seniors, Marie Fitzgerald, a four year diver, and Dave Osika a three year diver. But the team has three juniors, two Sophomores, and four Freshmen to eep the team running smoothly in the upcoming years. This year a new boys record was set at 185.1 by Neil Razzano which was previously held by Tony Sellari. Coach Mikilos says, lll'm looking forward to the year 200 is broken. The 1979-1980 Winter Track team had a fantastic season including winning the Bicentennial Athletic Conference Championships with a record of 6-1. They also won the small school title. Outstanding athletes on the track team were hurdler and high jumper Bob Beathea, sprinters Lloyd Mandel and Greg Gobel running the Vzand the 1X4 mile, Ken Riley running all of the long distance races, and Chet Weiss in the high jump. They also won the Bicentennia Athletic Conference Championships in a dramatic finish, when Senior Chuck Gaspari edged out his Highland Park opponent at the finish line, clinching his first place position in this race. The girls track team, led by Coac Cara, went undefeated this year. The girls Varsity track team consisted of shot-putter Vicki Albert, sprinter Missi Bern, hurdler Sue Schenkel, and Kathy Heinz and Chris Gromek running long distance.
